Many years ago 50+, I had planned to buy a motor home, so that I could travel and perform. However, once I had calculated the cost of fuel, and adding the cost of purchase AND maintenance, it was actually cheaper to sleep at Hotel 6, and have more room, a better bed, and a better shower/bath. Then, drive a smaller car with a suitcase from place to place.

These are nice - but for some reason I watch SO MANY videos showcasing European motorhomes of the same class and they always seem so much better in quality and interior design and don't seem afraid to break away from traditional layouts and interiors. American vehicles just seem like updated versions of 70's and 80's models.

Jayco Swift 20T length = 20' 11". That monthly price is for 20 years - just FYI. Compare versus Gulfstream "B Touring Cruiser 5210" (22' 1") $76,978 our best value pick with a somewhat similar floorplan. It is a Class C (B+) Ford E-350 so you will not get as good of gas mileage but for the additional 1' 2" and $12,696 less you get a very superior dry bath (separate shower, solid door), full-size RV refrigerator, superior galley with 3 burners and a double sink, and two jack-knife sofas and a Cummings Onan 4.0 KW generator. Also, as of this writing, there are used units for significantly less like the 2017 in Virginia with 5,345 miles for $59,900. So, if you're serious about camping, this would seem to us the way to go.

I see Class B's as a good solution for those who travel most days (as opposed who stay at camp sites for a few days at a time). It let's you fit in parking spots and avoids the hassle of towing. If one sets up camp a few days at a time, a trailer seems to be a better solution (let's you roam using the tow vehicle). Such a rig shines when traveling the country for the summer and visiting a new place every day.

i was thinking of getting a camper but don't know what to get. the class B really caught my attention seeing them around some places. i just finally became debt free paying off my house and really don't want to pay such a high price for something like this that cost more than my double wide 25 years ago. several years back pop-up tents were $6000 and now through the roof. but i may just have to settle for a pop up or a regular tent. why pay so much for an rv? it would seem to me that it would be cheaper to get a motel, but i guess that depends on what your lifestyle it too. i look at some of these campers and think, how do people afford these prices. i can't pay $80000 for a pickup just to buy a travel trailer that's high dollar also. i look at them and say, maybe, if i win the lottery, but if i did win the lottery., i could just buy a nice car and just stay in a luxury motel and not worry about pulling something behind me, and that's why i really thought about the class B anyway, not having to pull something behind me. i spend all week pulling something behind me every week driving my 18-wheeler. i am selling my truck anyway and going back to company driving because of high fuel cost and they don't want me to haul their freight for what it should be, the brokers want all of the money and the shippers don't want to pay nothing.

It is a nice layout but a couple of things to consider. The passenger seat swivels but not the drivers', so to eat with your spouse, you will have to set up one of the center aisle tables. In explaining the wet bath, he failed to point his camera to the ceiling. We have a small tear drop trailer with a wetbath, but the shower curtain can be pulled around so the only portion of the actual bathroom getting wet is the shower handles. By not seeing the ceiling I can't tell if there is a 360 rail or not. The term self contained in many RVers mind means self contained to include providing your own power. He mentions solar but its unclear what the solar will power. In many rigs, it will provide sufficient power for lights and possibly the fridge. I didn't hear him say whether the fridge was dual power or not; meaning solar, electric, or propane. Pricey for a non 4x4 rig so you'll have to be smart where you park. If you are adventurous, this 2xwheel drive option and not having sufficient solar/battery or an onboard generator probably isn't for you. It comes down to the type of camping someone wants to do. I encourage my friends who want to start RVing, to rent a rig first. Go small, make a multiple stop trip, see how things work. Pulling a trailer has it's advantages - you have a vehicle to go explore, insurance and maintenance is less, but the downside is you are towing.

Don't worry that much! We have been half-timing (6 months per year) since 1995 and have never been in a "scary" situation. If you are traveling as a single woman there are women's caravans that you can join to help relieve anxiety of traveling alone (see Cheap RV Living channel for more information). Full disclosure, we have broken down but never with a "new" rig. The cost is dependent if you are going to live in an RV or be a tourist in an RV. The less distance you drive, the less it costs. Our current monthly cost is about $1500/month including $420 for RV payment and $80 for insurance but not including repairs and maintenance and medical insurance for Vicki.

I agree to a large extent, Connie. Would I pay it? Nope, but I'm not much for Class B's. Obviously, some of the people posting have not priced many new models in this class. Granted this model is pretty bare bones, but many of the competitors are significantly more expensive (like $125k and beyond). Class B's in general always seemed like a waste to me. I would much rather go with a nice Class C that's not only more livable, but also quite a bit more affordable. I imagine they *really* seem expensive to people looking at them more as just a vehicle than as an RV or a place to live, which are the things a lot of people are using them for.
