Part of my recent visit to Hitchcock's Motorcycles. I had the opportunity to take a close look at the new 350 Meteor and take it for a ride.
Here are my thoughts about the riding experience and general quality of the bike!

I’ve got one Stuart and I love it. A lot of older guys like me (72)who want something a little lighter and easy to manage will be attracted to it. It’s so undemanding. Who cares if it’s not the quickest, I’ve done all that. Now I just want to keep biking till I’m eighty.

A couple of months back I sold my Classic 500. I thought I had finished with bikes after 50 years. But I saw this bike and wanted one. My local dealer said 8 to 12 weeks to getting one. The Wigan dealer had three in stock and it arrives next week, but they would not include delivery from Wigan to Grimsby (£75) in price. They are, however, giving me a screen at cost with free fitting, so it is worth haggling. I found many insurers are unaware of the bike and would not insure it. I got fully comp for £75 eventually from an insurer the dealer told me about. - Chris Topher.

You don't need a fast bike to have fun. My favourite times on my interceptor are spent at like 30km/h with my girlfriend on the back cruising lazily around quite places we've never been before, just checking out the scenery.

Hello, the Royal Enfield meteor 350 is not a beginner bike, but a normal great bike for anyone who loves motorcycling. I myself have been driven Harleys for 50 years, from sportster to WLA 750, nothing wrong with the meteor 350, a great motorcycle, I also bought one, great for touring both on country roads and on the highway, nothing wrong with that bike.

Quite agree. At 74 years of age I am finding my Honda 750F2r and BSA A10 650 heavy, and a chore to get out to ride. When my Meteor Stella arrives I will have a bike that I can just jump on and go lane-cruising without fear my legs will give way. Triumph have really missed the boat [again] not building a middleweight like this.

I hate the "beginner bike" attitude. Ride whatever fits your needs, budget and desires. I started out on a 50cc scoot and rode it for 5 years before moving up. I went all the way up to a 650 but found that was too big and expensive for my current daily commuting routine.The Meteor 350 is on my short list for my next ride. I have almost 14 years of riding experience now so no longer a "beginner".

Well you cant be a beginner and ride this surely as you cant ride a 350cc on a CBT so dont understand this point? I think after a yr on a 125cc I dont have to class myself as a begginer. No?
@speedandstyletony
@speedandstyletony 3 жыл бұрын
CBT is in the UK only although other countries may have similar regulations. In the USA there is NO size limit to start and some states have little or no required training program one must complete. I am in the USA. Beginner isn't a time but more of an attitude and skillset. If after a year on a 125 you have gained the right state of riding awareness and skills then yea you are no longer a beginner.

You managed to put all thoughts I had for months about the meteor into a less than twenty minutes video. I wasn't into soft chopper or 20bhp "beginner" bikes really so when RE launched the meteor I was a bit disappointed. As soon as tests and comparisons were published and KZbin was flooded with owner reviews I started to change my mind. Eventually I became a meteor owner myself 🙈 and I honestly think this is one of the best bikes I've ever owned. Everything you've said is true. Is it a beginner bike, because it is nimble, not overpowered, well balanced, topping out at 120km/h and reasonably priced? Well actually I don't care. After 5 minutes on that bike all trouble is gone and another 5 minutes later I remember why I started to ride motorbikes. It wasn't about speed or power ... Mr. Fillingham Sir, please keep up the good work and go on making such interesting and at the same time entertaining videos like this one!

I think people who laugh at 300-350cc motorcycles miss one very potent market: city/town commuters. That's a very compelling spot, as shown in Poland with 125cc bikes. They are great if you don't need a 1.5 ton steel box to go to the city hall or whatever and don't want to burn as much fuel during the whole ride as idling 1200cc HD.

On paper it's an underpowered 350 made in India. Why do I want one so much? It has an almost hypnotic effect. Speaks to the heart more than the brain. I could get a Honda Rebel 300 for the same price that outperforms it, but I won't even consider the Rebel, while I feel an almost irresistible desire to go get the Meteor. To be honest, the Enfield charm really pulls classic riders , who love to keep it simple, easy and real. That long stroke motor and the unique sound signature is a blessing for one who appreciates. My neighbour has a 1961 bullet 350 still running like a cannon and I have a Thunderbird (the bike that Meteor actually replaces in the lineup) 500 and puts a big wide smile on my face.

Why are these motors so low performance? 349cc is plenty to get 30hp and reasonable torque. Two cylinder 234cc carb drip fuel Hondas get 20hp. At almost 500lbs 21hp is likely to struggle to sustain 70mph on a highway carrying 180 lbs of rider. Worse with a bird. The old CB350 from 1970 got 37 and respectful torque. It had the spunk to get away from a problem.

@@STho205 My carb equiped Classic 350 will (after removing some emission equipment) cruise at 60mph, and just touch about 80mph flat out, it is getting fairly revy and busy at 80mph. But these bikes are not intended for that, the heavy weight makes them a great cruiser soaking up B road bumps much better than my 500cc Honda. Any where between 50 and 60 is their happy place and they will chug along all day returning near 100mpg. It's horses for courses.

Hi Stuart (and all). Just went to Auckland to have a look. Was surprised how big it felt...the tank is wide as...and overall proper bike feel with size and excellent quality. It was pissing down so no ride but we started it up (red fireball which is my pick) and wow...what a cool sound..and you can feel the smoothness just with a few revs. I've been riding for years (so many) and crossed many countries on two wheels and certainly no beginner or a lady and I'm gonna buy one. This thing about 350s being for beginners and girls? One is dumb. And one is sexist and dumb. Loved this review and your open minededness and subscribed. Good luck over there all. I love that bikes like this are becoming more popular. I'm 31 and just starting out on the road, and the amount of flak you get from family members who think bikes are dangerous is annoying. It's all because of people buying big 1ltr "angry tupperware" bikes and racing them around the countryside once a month - they're the ones who are crashing and giving the rest of motorcycling a bad name. I think it's great now more younger people are getting into bikes and going for things like this instead.

I'm 30 and have ridden bikes infrequently for about 15 years, but 12 months ago got an Interceptor. I think it's important to realise that regardless of whether your family exaggerates the dangers or not, motorbikes actually are very dangerous compared to other modes of travel. I absolutely love riding them, but never forget how vulnerable and difficult to see you are to other drivers. Always be cautious. But also always have fun!

I've been a year-round, all weather motorcyclist for 38 years now. There's a huge amount you can do to make them less dangerous. Experience, maturity, good gear and practical common sense measures all help. But you are more vulnerable than in a car. They are inherently dangerous. Never forget that.

When I test rode the Meteor 350, I was surprised by the suspension and braking quality. In fact the entire bike is extremely well built. Next level quality. With enough power for what the engine is build for, it was fine, albeit noticeably a slight let down jumping directly off my Classic 500 with the significant addition of horsepower and torque. However the marginal smoothness was very welcome, as lucky as my C5 seems to be as it suffers from very little vibration, it was noticeable and better. For Australia, it is under powered, but it does everything needs to, and at least with that counterbalanced engine, it won’t leave you fatigued after a highway ride at high speed.

Like all new bikes from RE this isn't the perfect creation and doesn't fully reboot the old Meteor, rather a little more on modern than a homage to classic look of bikes from RE which we are used to looking at. Yes it's closest to the Thunderbird than any other models from RE as well as cruisers from other brands. I was glad to hear about this bike's engine being a completely new one (just like RE twins & Himalayan), and not derivative of the Bullet, About the style and looks one may argue, but the switchgear and instrument cluster is definitely quite retro looking which I appreciate. Also the fact RE is progressing to try out new things is an indication that these bikes will be produced for long to be remembered, and have more options and more development going into the model(s).

My etz 250 was a brilliant bike that did everything required of it at a very low cost. Last year I saw 2 guys on C90's doing the NC500. They, with their belongings in bin bags bungee'd on the back, looked to be having more fun than the hordes of KTM/GS posers with their colour-matched clothing and hugely expensive machines that have never gone off road. Good review, Stuart. When I first read the technical specs for this model, it instantly fitted into the same slot with me as the old late-model MZ 250-301 range. Having owned a couple of these (also 20 bhp) I found it quite interesting. I reckon it would be a brilliant year-round commuter (snow, floods and black ice excepted of course). In the UK, the aforementioned MZs are still in demand in the second-hand market when in good condition, so there's probably plenty of bikers out there would find the Meteor a great inexpensive ride.

J series Platform marks a new Era in Royal Enfield product line. Organic, mechanical feel of riding a classic has been taken-over by new age refinement, ease of riding and electronics. I suppose this is as far the single long stroke engines could go, future would cherish them but not assimilate.

Great appraisal Stuart, your mention of the older 350’s took me back 60 years. When, after a string of James’s and Francis Barnet’s, my older brother came home on his brand new Matchless 350, bought from Kings of Oxford. When old enough, my cousin and I had many miles of fun on our Triumph T90’s and later on with a Suzuki T350 2 stroke, complete with expansion pipes. I suppose the 350cc class reached its final crescendo when Yamaha brought out the RD350, still regarded as a classic today.

RE will propably (if they haven´t already) start a whole new trend in motorcycling with this low priced cruiser style bike. And they will entice a lot of people either back in, or to start with motorcycling. Which is a good thing, and will also force other manufacturers down the same route. And I sense from your review that you honestly enjoyed riding it, which means that it also is a fun bike to us experienced greybeards. I have been waiting for your review on this one, thanks for taking it on and doing this video. Well done, mr Fillingham and a big thumbs up...

I have a meteor. I have drove it around 3500 KM till now and have fallen in love with the bike, specifically the engine. If someone wants to buy it, then there are only a few negatives - 1. Don't go for stock rear mirrors, they get quite loose during long rides. 2. Backrest is too close to the seat. A big pillion will always be uncomfortable. 3. The engine feels a lot powerful in the city, but on highways you will feel the lack of power.

Third time I've watched this review. If/when RE comes out with a Meteor 500/+, It shall be mine. Here in the States, you occasionally have to get on the highway (slab) to get to your destination. With traffic running at 65-70 mph in some places, I'm afraid that the Meteor 350 might be trouble waiting to happen. I love the bike, however I'll wait to see what the RE design team comes up with. As always, I enjoy your vids & respect your opinion. Stay safe & keep the shiny side up!

Back in 1970 on a quite road in New Delhi we had a lone Royal Enfield 350 ‘Bullet’ rider in front of us. While riding, he took out his pack of cigarettes 🚬 and proceeded to light one and continued to ride that thumping beast as we followed him! I was a 9 year old lad and to this day 64 years later I can still picture that scene as if it was yesterday.

I'd have loved one of these back in the 80's when I got my first road bike. Smaller bikes can be a just as much fun as larger ones on country roads, because you can rag on them and not get into too much trouble. That's important for someone new to riding. If they'd also bring out a 650 or bigger engined version now, I'd take a serious look at buying one, because I do like the style and layed back look of it.

It just makes the Bike look like a Toy on the whole. I apologize to Royal Enfield for not trusting their Judgement on this, I have gone 100% on everything else they’ve produced. You’ve done them a great Service in changing my mind, ( still not buying one ), I’m back on the Bandwagon so to speak, even though they don’t always play the Tunes I’m Familiar with. Hello there! Thanks for this honest review. This RE Meteor is making a good portion of motorcyclists here in Brazil excited. The lines for test rides and to buy this bike keeps growing. KZbin reviews come up more and more, and I say we needed something like that here. With this new addition from RE (not to mention the excellent Interceptor/Continental GT), other manufacturers will think hard about bringing more models to compete with this beautiful modern classic. The classic/custom motorcycle movement here, unfortunately, stopped a bit in time but it's growing again. I do believe that this Meteor will play a significant role in this regard. See ya!

Great video and you make some really good points. I‘ve had my Meteor since June and the spirit of the Bullet is alive in this one ! I owned an original four-speed right hand gearshift Bullet 500 for many years and to me the Meteor simply feels like a Bullet for the new generation. The sound, engine characteristics and performance really remind me of the essence of my old Bullet. But the Meteor is just so much easier to live with and so much more comfortable to ride that I really can’t see myself ever selling it. The low seat height means that I should be able to get my leg over it when I’m 80 years old, so why should I sell it ? It does everything I need a hobby motorcycle to do. Thanks for the great video, I have subscribed !
