This is the second (#2) Barbie that Mattel has created in honor of David Bowie. This particular Barbie is playing homage to his Life On Mars? music video. First visit to your channel. I was searching specifically for this doll because Santa (hubby) is getting me BOTH Bowie Barbies for Christmas!!! Mine will never leave the box so it is nice to get a close-up review of her out of the package! I grew up with Barbies and I am a Bowie fanatic, so it is only natural for me to want these dolls. I'm so excited to add these to my Bowie collection!

I have listened to a lot of David Bowie's music (my parents have listened to a lot of classic rock music when they were in high school)...and in 2015 when I was 30, I had gone to Cleveland, Ohio with my parents for a mini-vacay, and one of the things we did was go to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame during our second day in Cleveland. There, we saw the costumes that David Bowie wore. If I feel inclined to make a video of that Cleveland vacation I went to in 2015, I'll be including the David Bowie costumes. I'm surprised Mattel's making so many Barbies doing tribute to certain things. I have considered getting American Girl dolls and having the doll pay a tribute to a certain video game franchise (Mario, Donkey Kong, Zelda, Kirby, Animal Crossing, Sonic the Hedgehog, Spyro the Dragon, Crash Bandicoot, Pac-Man, etc.) as my third AG doll (the long retired JLY #4 doll) is named Susan Miyamoto, who invented Mario with the help of the original Donkey Kong video game from 1981. The David Bowie Barbie's makeup is STUNNING! I also agree, there should've been a Ken doll with that same outfit! Not sure if you've seen my channel, but I did upload the video of me talking about my limited edition Sergeant Calhoun (from Wreck-It Ralph) doll. Hope you get around to seeing it! -Andrea

Great review! As a Bowie fan since my teens I had to buy this doll (especially since I missed the first one). I don't think it's as unique as the first one (and I still think Mattel should have used Ken) but I do really like her and love the packaging. An aside: If you're interested in getting to know Bowie's music I highly recommend listening to the double-album "Stage" (from 1978). It's a concert greatest-hits set with excellent versions of the earlier songs that made him an icon. Enjoy!

I love the outfit, I think it looks pretty spot on. I'm just not sure what I think about Barbie's face and make-up. If they had used a Ken doll and given him the same make-up I think it would have made it quite different but as you say people would probably draw more comparisons with Bowie himself, at least this way its more subversive because Barbie is wearing a suit. Maybe.

@@BoyLikesDolls Ha! I didn't even notice the bowtie slip up. I think if they did the Ken then people would expect it to be a Bowie doll rather than an homage to Bowie. That said they could do a twin box of Barbie and Ken both paying tribute to Bowie in two unique looks. Also I'm really glad that the doll is posable and not just on a stiff limbed "Fashionista" style body like the Luna New Year doll was which they released earlier this year or the Holiday Barbie will be.

I'm a massive Bowie fan, and I've been so curious about this doll - I think it's suitable (ha) for a doll, but he is so well known for really outlandish and elaborate outfits and this isn't ENTIRELY indicative of his style, but it is relevant. I think they did a great job with the faceup and makeup!

The great plus of the Barbie David Bowie dolls is that there are no many David Bowie toys, besides this two Barbies there is Jareth doll from Labyrinth and some funkos but not a collection like the ones that The Beatles or Kiss have.
