Portrait is great when you're using a map in track up mode, because it allows you to "see" further ahead than landscape does. Landscape show you more of what's off to the sides, and less of what out ahead of you.
@chris7jakarta2 жыл бұрын
@1:44 when you drive you want to see far ahead and not more on the left or right. I don't understand why you would have you navigation horizontal. maybe it depends on the app you're using and if you use it in 2D or 3D mode
@burrito-town2 жыл бұрын
Why in the world would you use the sat nav in landscape??? The direction you are traveling is in front of you, not off to your left and right. Portrait mode lets you see more of the map in the direction you are traveling. Landscape mode only gives you the width of your phone to see the map in front of you. Using landscape mode to navigate makes no sense.

I've been using Quad Lock mounts for a couple of years now, and I love them. It replaced my TomTom Rider, which I never got along with. They're fitted to my Street Triple, mountainbike and also to my road bike. Their cases are excellent as well. I tend to drop my iPhone quite a lot, and it is still without a scratch. Yes, they're pricey but you do really get what you pay for. Rock solid stuff. Oh, and I like to run it in portrait mode as well. Especially while using Waze, you can see further ahead.

Interesting fact about the aluminum 'pro' version - it transfers exponentially more sharp and damaging vibration and shock to your phone than the plastic version, which attenuates vibration and shock.

But is also weaker and I've seen pics and posts where the nylon ripped and the phone fell off. So I went with the stronger version not made from nylon. (And it's nylon, not plastic). Also, the phone sleeve itself is rubber/plastic and I've had no issues with vibration. I suppose If you're going off-road *so* much that you're vibrating it to the point that you're actually vibrating your ass off, possibly get the vibration dampener instead of going with the cheaper construction?

Just ordered the case, the mount pro for motorbike, the vibration dampener, and also a window car mount as I have to travel for work and don't always use my bike to do that (damn UK weather!). Thank you for the discount :) I may get the wireless charger in the near future but, as you say, it is an expensive kit to build up. Important warning about wireless chargers in general. They are less efficient than wired charging, using about 50% more. This loss is in heat, which can cause your device/charger to overheat and prevent further charging. So on a hot day in France 30C+ my wireless charger stopped working when the navigation was on etc... Had to pull over somewhere cool and turn off the screen to let it charge up :(

I use the Quad Lock on my bike and it’s nicely made gear. I just wish I could leave the case on my phone permanently, but the bump on the back of the case makes the phone rock about if you’re trying to use it whilst it’s on a flat surface. I’d be happier for the case to be thicker but flat on the back. Other than that, I love how secure it feels when in use. This new “Pro” version is pricey though (not that the regular range is cheap!). Personally I’ll be sticking with the regular setup as I don’t really see any advantage with the pro.

Increasing case thickness to compensate for bump would also allow space for coolinve vents. It's fine for now, but I worry about how it will work on long rides in Summer.

Why mount it horizontal? Easy: #1 if mounted in center it does not obstruct the view to the main cluster #2 (and more importently, at least for me) it does not wobble and vibrate as much and is lot more stable because the center of mass is not distributed unevenly from top to bottom - so as a result vibrating reflections on the screen are far less irritating 😮

If You like something minimal on your bike, for a phone mounting, take a look at the "Peak Design mobile" It is smaller from the basic Quadlock and it comes standard with a vibration dampener. And above all it is the strongest mounting of all others (Quadlock, SP Connect) Only wireless charging is missing but my experience with the wireless charger of "Quadlock" was not the best either. A usb plug was not enough to charge my phone, although Quadlock phonecase and enough power supply on the USB plug. It was necessary the Waterproof 12V To USB Smart Adapter from "Quadlock". Another 35€ on the bill and more cables on the bike for a wireless charging. Still use the "poncho" and the waterproof USB C simple cable. They are good.

Come on, this is a completely normal use case. This is exactly how I use the QuadLock wireless charger on my CRF1100L on short/everyday rides, with frequent stops. I just don't want to deal with plugging/unplugging wire, I don't need big screen navigation, but I still want a glanceable Waze map at all times. Of course, wireless CarPlay would be the best solution, but alas.

BTW, on longer touring rides I do plug the wire and use TWO maps simultaneously. Normal navigation on the CarPlay display + overview map on the phone to have a better "large picture" geographic awareness (or a custom second map when riding offroad).

Portrait for me, I want to see as far down the road as possible! Undoubted quality, but adds up to a fair old wedge doesn’t it. Beeline looks nice but can react a bit too slow sometimes and then you get stuck in a spin as it tries to reroute.... good but not as good as a map IMO.

Beauty about teh Quadlock is that you can use it wiht Waze, Google Maps, Sizapp, even Beeline all via the apps. Not as sleek or discreet as the Beeline moto but you have freedom to choose traffic congestion over minimalism. Both hae their places - for me Waze in the urban setting and Beeline in the more rural where congestion is less an issue.

I've been seriously considering a Quad Lock Pro mount. I recently installed a Cardo bluetooth system in my helmet and use it to receive turn-by-turn navigation directions via an app in my phone (which I carry in my pocket), but would really like to be able to have the visual guidance of the maps on my phone. I have a 2020 T120 and had previously considered the BeeLine Moto, because of it's simplicity and sleek appearance, but it doesn't give turn-by-turn directions, so I'm thinking the Quad Lock for my phone is perhaps the best option. I use portrait, not because I like it, but because if the iPhone not at enough of an angle when you rotate it, it won't detect you turned it and will stay in portrait. And you can't lock the iPhone in landscape mode - because that would make too much sense. So if I put it on my mount and rotate it, the phone's landscape but the screen stays in portrait. The fix for this is to have the mount at an angle the phone will rotate the screen. But the angle where this kicks is makes it really hard to see the screen because the angle's bad. If I fiddle with it I can make it go into landscape, but it's never really consistently. And using the phone in landscape with the screen still in portrait is uh, bad.
