Hey just wanted to point out another really nice use case for this product. People that have cheaper all-in-one units like growatts and 6500ex/lv6548 have a TON of issues with ground/neutral bonding when they try and supplement their solar/battery power with grid power. This lets everyone in that boat disconnect their AIO units from the grid entirely, and connect through DC using this product. Should make a lot of people's homes safer, and fix a ton of issues with parallel pathways etc. To clarify, I mean using this chargeverter with grid power to supplement solar, not using it with a gen.
@andrewt9204
@andrewt9204 Жыл бұрын
Good point. I have an LV6048 and was worried about that, but someone that took theirs apart on the forums did confirm that it does have a bonding relay that goes to open on grid bypass mode. But that relay could fail and you would never really know. The only downside is you'd be cycling your batteries all the time if you were primarily using it for grid backup. Not as big of a problem with LFP obviously.

Dealing with that exact issue and have come upon that exact solution, I wish you could use solar/home assistant to control the amperage though. Ideally when the batteries are low I could have home assistant apply charge at whatever rate the load is to effectively zero current to the batteries.

@@andrewt9204 Hi Andrew. I think I'm in the same boat as you. I've got a Sungoldpower version of the LVX6048 and I'm a bit lost on the ground-neutral bond situation. Is there a setting in the AIO unit itself I can change to separate it? My unit makes an awful sound and eventually fails with an error code when I try to do solar - battery - utility versus solar-utiliity-battery.

@@tomtruong7432 When you are in SUB mode, are you drawing from the batteries ever? If not, I would guess the problem lies somewhere between the battery and the connection to the inverter. cheap inverter generators are actually the ones that produces dirty power and can't handle much variation in load. Just look at Victron inverters and how much electronics is needed to produce actual clean sine power. These cheap generators don't have the amount of space availble to pull that off. Just take a look at James Condon, he repairs generators and also load tests them, including the "dirtyness"

**EDIT** also this is HUGE for another reason. Whenever my inverter (MS4448) senses grid power, or is charging from the grid (my generator with me being off grid) it goes into passthrough mode. So I have DIRTY sine waves from the generator running my whole house. Lights flicker when it throttles up and down, my 20k$ development PCS dont like it at all. No matter what I do I cant get ito to run from the batteries and just charge the batteries. It ALWAYS defaults to charging from the grid and supplying you from the "grid". With this system you can still run your sweet sweet perfect sine wave inverters, all without them knowing about power charging the batteries. **Original. you LITERALLY just solved 5 years of battery trouble with me being off grid. I have a "pure sine wave" inverter/generator from honda. but the signal is really dirty. I notice that when i get solar to charge my batteries, they last forever. Yet, the second i charge a bank from my generator it almost ruins the bank. Ive spent the past years going over settings, everything. This is exactly what i need!

Propane doesn't produce as much power and I don't know how the cost compares but you can keep it around a long time without it degrading. and rather than try to figure out which other comment to reply to, I'll reply to my own. :D while I'd hate to "feature creep" this 'chargeverter', one thing I could potentially see being useful, is a rudimentary built-in timer control for it, so it could be scheduled to charge the batteries from it's source at specific time(s). unless someone knows of a cheap (sub-$50) inline 240v outlet timer. You should have picked a non-inverter (legacy) generator, those are the "dirty" generators. Many of us have that older style and they are the ones that are likely to cause a problem. Voltronic (MPP, EG4) has a paper on their site about using a generator and says that older style non-inverters are the ones that can cause problems. The inverter type would have no problem powering the all-in-one. Too bad, I would like to have known if the Chargeverter would have worked on my old Generac 7550 generator.

Sounds like there may be some issues with some generators damaging AIO inverters while battery charging. My guess is that a good inverter generator with pure sine wave signal would avoid most issues, however; if SS is saying there is a need for the generator to have a 2x higher max output than the AIO inverter, that be quite important information to know before designing your system. It sounds like Will is already on the case so I’m sure he’ll come back later after testing and clarify like always!

You can use a pure sign wave inverter generator to charge the batteries. The issue is with dirty power. SS recommends a generator 2-3 times the size of the system to avoid dirty power. That's pretty awesome. I have a Cummins Onan 7000 watt QG series fuel injected generator, it was free to me, just needed some maintenance, super quiet however it only outputs 120 volts on 2 circuits, each being 3500 watts. It's power output however is very clean. I have one of the two circuits going to a Growatt that I use just for 120 volt loads, adding one of these to the second circuit I could then use the full output of the generator to charge batteries in an extended outage or just use it on the one circuit and not need to use the Growatt for charging from the generator at all. Much better deal than the Aims one and the easy to use display to set the settings would make it even easier to setup. Really nice. Being able to use both circuits at 3000 watts each would allow me to charge my battery bank in about 4 to 5 hours and then turn off the generator, way better than having to run it longer. I will say, fuel injected is the only way to go for a gas generator, no more dealing with gummed up carbs. If the fuel is old, swap it, hit the primer button to flush fresh fuel into it and boom it fires right up.

Based upon settings of 57 volts, 77.5 amps (matched for maximum efficiency of my Champion 8000/10000 watt generator using propane for this test and a constant running wattage of around 7250) with a 49% battery SOC at the beginning of the charge, it tool 2 hours, 51 minutes to charge 3 batteries to 98.7% (I stopped the charging as I had to run an errand). This would have taken around 6 hours or more using my old 48V 18 amp charger. This will in effect halve my typical time and propane consumption. I might get better results running on gasoline, ( the running wattage is a bit higher so I could up the amperage a little) but the cost is about 75% more per gallon cost of propane here. I can potentially stretch a 40 lb propane tank out for 6 days of cloudy/snowy weather which us usual for this time of year here in the snow belt. When it's actually sunny, I can fully charge my 3 batteries from a 40% SOC in under 5 hours with my 12 Canadian Solar 445 Watt BiFacial panels.

Thanks Will! I was thinking about that issue of charging through an all in one from the 8750watt generator that does not have a clean inverted output. Probably worth the extra money. Also some all in one systems will not feed from batteries while being ac charged. This would eliminate that issue as well.

I don't know if this will help anyone or not, but I called Signature Solar to get some clarification from them on Will's statements concerning generators and all in one inverters. If you have an off the grid situation as i do with a cabin, generator use at times is an only option. So the message i took from Will was that you would need a 22KW generator and that a smaller generator will cause the all in one inverter not to work. Their response to me was that some generators send out such erratic sine waves that the inverter won't work with the AC power it is receiving. If your generator works then it works and you're fine. There is no damage happening, it just either works or doesn't. Also they are not recommending a 22KW generator, but they do recomment that the generator that you use have twice the AC output that your inverter puts out. So if you have a 3KW inverter, then have at least a 6KW generator. Maybe this info helps others as it does me. Thanx for all the good work Will.

Wish you would have gotten the larger harbor freight generator with electric start. Then test if the 6500EX could start it when battery level gets low. Secondary test to see if the 6500EX could turn the generator back off when battery level rises to a set point. And NOT use the 6500EX for the charging, using the Chargeverter, only using the 6500EX for generator start/stop.

I ordered one about two weeks ago but they are back ordered. I have an inverter generator and currently run it through my inverter but when house loads are high the genny rpm’s fluctuate and a couple lights flicker. I thought it would be easier on my appliances and inverter to just run off of the batteries while charging them with the chargeverter.

I'm still so upset you had such an awful experience with your Lightning! You're absolutely right that it's the perfect for power testing and backup energy storage, etc. I use the Pro-Power On-board outputs all the time. I've had my Lightning since October of last year and have had zero issues with mine. It's disappointing that yours was a lemon. It does seem that the Platinum trim level trucks are more prone to issues than any of the others.

What you said about the all in one system failures related to generator connections is a major bummer. I was of the opinion that, within reason, you could throw a 7k-9k generator on these things and charge the systems no problem. Do you think this is true of ALL systems or just the EG4 brand?

You can limit the grid charging current on a hybrid inverter so that it doesn't over-load the generator. Still, I would make sure the generator is the inverter type and I would not run the generator at full load. I've charged batteries through an MPP 3kW inverter using a Honda EU2200i with no issues.

I know you've been broke so maybe you can relate. The use case for one of these is to save money on batteries. Batteries are getting cheaper but they are still expensive. A cheap harbor freight generator and this running just an hour a day can dramatically decrease your battery requirements and get you off grid for a lot cheaper. You might have fun running the numbers but the big thing is you don't have to overbuild your battery system to account for cloudy days.

@@xgouldiex yea, Roger that. I did the adjustments as recommended at the time. This 65 was the closest to 60. I also called and emailed the manufacturer. The 4500 ft and -10F were issues. Unfortunately because I have to have heaters for my off grid batteries it was a big deal. I was relying on the generator as backup. I ended up getting different generator and that worked fine. Growatt also did not have a work around either. I had considered going through intermediate inverter chargers as well to fix the 65 hz issue but time was limited for me in terms of solving it. Eventually, I broke down to individual components in my system instead of one Growatt like system component, and I have no problems and a lot more flexibility

@@rickharold7884 lately I've been thinking that different component systems are better than these all-in-ones.. Probably better just getting one of the big victron solar controllers and another good pure sine wave inverter. More expensive but better in the long run probably. I'm really sorry to hear that my charging system is not even going to work properly if I was to plug my generator into the AC input. I didn't know anything about that until today. I might have made a different choice on what I bought had I have known. But this charger might be advantageous for many things anyway. Well I'm glad I saw the video

Is that just for NA power grid, or does it accept 50hz/European grid output too? That would be great for sailing cruisers. Most boats are either setup for 60hz or 50hz shore power, so cruisers can struggle when in port after crossing oceans. Something like that would allow them to just plug-in at a marina and charge their battery bank directly then live off their inverter, without having to worry about all their AC components on the boat.
