Excellent idea. It needs to come with a GPS tracking device for when it gets stollen.

@americanrvtraveler2446 That's an excellent idea. My concern also. Maybe one of those tracker devices that Apple or Samsung manufacturers could be stealthily attached. 🤔

Thank you for the information on this product Jerry! We just purchased a new 5th wheel trailer and our old surge protector was only for 30 amp systems so we needed a new solution. We compared a stand alone surge protector and the Active Start product and it was a no brainer to go with the Active Start system for our RV. We already ordered it from the link in your blog (thanks for the discount!), and it will arrive in a couple of days. Thanks again for the great information and we look forward to future equipment reviews and RV adventures from you!

Great to hear you found the video helpful. It’s a great product. Also a big advantage in the summer for those times you’re on 30 amp power with the AC running. Safe travels.

Great review! Thank you! So many of us are penny wise and pound foolish. We spend 6 figures on an RV but balk at investing 3 figures to protect it.

@@iLoveRVlife The English idiom “penny wise and pound foolish” is a popular saying that warns against safeguarding pennies while risking pounds. In other words, being stingy with small sums of money while being extravagant with larger sums.

According to your amperage the compressor head cut off on the first unit

Apprectiate you channel and content. Your review on the Active Start is a year old. What is your current assessment? We recently acquired a new fifth wheel with 50 amp. We love state campgrounds of which the majority are 30 amp. We also camp at RV parks which typically offer 50 amp service. Why would I need the 50 amp version, when I only need the soft start on 30 amp, or less. Cost difference is significant. Thank you.

Thanks. Appreciate you watching. If you’ll only use 30A connections and plan to run only one AC, the 30 amp will serve well. This was the video from our evaluation of then 30A unit kzbin.info/www/bejne/pZTSiKCgm7uemKs The generator is rated for 30 amps. Worked great. We’ve used these exclusively and have heavy use on each model. They work great.

Hi Jerry! Thanks for this video. We also have a 2022 Montana (3231CK). Question; if I already have a soft start installed on one of our AC units (long story) would using one of these 50 amp active start units conflict with that or would it still work fine? Thanks and keep the great info coming.

Lots of great information Jerry, thank you. I am purchasing a 2020 Keystone Montana 3121RL. Is this too much device for me at $750? My unit does have 2 A/C's. The link you provided shows $750 and so does Amazon. Is there an additional discount using Jerry? Also, you mentioned a 3.5KW generator that works well for your RV. I think my manual recommends a Onan 5.5KW unit. I was thinking of contacting an installer and purchasing a generator so I don't need to use a bigger portable one. I would love to hear your recommendations. My class C I'm selling has a Onan 4000 gas generator, and my previous slide-in had a Onan 3.5LP one, otherwise my Honda 2000i will have to do for now since I'm in Alaska and no A/C needed typically. However going to do a 6month trip south starting this Oct and will probably like some AC. Thanks for your time.

Hi Tom. $750 for all the features offered is less than individual components. Check out the costs of two installed softstarts - one for each AC, an energy management system, and surge protection supporting over 5,000 joules. It think you’ll find this a good value. I understand why a 5.5kW would be recommended. Without the softstarts, more generator is needed to handle the amperage surge when the AC compressor kicks. I’m not having any issues with the 3500. If you’re looking at a propane fueled generator, many of these take a 18% reduction in power. There’s a profile in the Active Control for a 2000 watt generator. The 2000i can handle 13 amps. Shouldn’t have an issue running one AC. With the EMS feature you can monitor amperage demand and determine if other 120V appliances can operate while the AC is running. Hope this helps. Safe travels.

Can you dog bone 30am plug from the pedestal to the 50am connection on the ActiveStart 50amp? If not which ActiveStart system should I buy, 30amp or the 20amp?

I bought the 50amp version. Used it for the first-time and it wouldn't run both ACs on my camper. Use a 3500 watt generator at first and it kept tripping so changed to a 5000 watt inverter generator and still won't run both ACs. I did plug in the provided neutral plug. Went to the app and changed from pedestal to size generator that l was using. Do you have any advice to share with me to fix the issue...lt wouldn't run the fridge and 1 AC unit

Sorry to hear you’ve having an issue. I usually run one AC with the fridge, but have run both ACs. When both are on, I trip the breaker to the Charge / converter. It’s 75 amps and if it turns on with both ACs it exceeds 30 amps and overloads the generator. I don’t know your set up. Looking at the app gives load information if something is running high amps. I’d suggest contacting Active Control. They know the product and can offer assistance based on your RV, power requirements, etc. I’ve found them to be very helpful.

Can you make a video about which ActiveStart, 30amp, 20amp, and 50 amp comparison? Can the 50 amp AS work on a 30amp rv park plug? Will the 20amp work like the 30am AS? It’s confusing which on to buy. I have a 5th wheel and just want to be able to mooch dock and take a 30am spot in an rv park if it’s my only option.

Mark, you only need one ActiveStart depending on your RV. If 50 amp use the 50, if 30 Amp use the 30. You can use a dog bone to convert up or down amperage as needed. If you’re not familiar with dog bones or converters, this should help kzbin.info/www/bejne/q2nIfXuFi5mArKc

@markwiegard8384 Correct. We do this often. Just remember, the 30 is shared on both 50 amp legs so you’ll be limited to what you can power in the RV.

If the surge protection takes a hit can it be replaced individually or does the whole unit have to be replaced. I have a Power Watchdog system for 50 amp and the surge protection is a replaceable part .
