The Airbus A380 is the largest commercial airliner in the world. It is so large that most airports in the world apart from the large hubs can’t even accommodate it through their gates.
This unique jet was supposed to be the answer to the overcrowding of air traffic at major hubs which made a lot of sense during its development. However, as Airbus soon found out, the results were a mixed bag.
However, the A380 might just have found a new lease of life and is set to make a massive comeback to the skies.
How? Well let’s find out.

As a passenger I wouldn't willingly fly on a 737 max derivative. But I would pay EXTRA to fly on the 380. It is so much better than ANY other airplane. It is like comparing the Titanic to a sailing ship. As someone who has to cross the Pacific we are already forced to use the hub and spoke model whether we want to or not. There is no likelihood of that changing. Please either give me the 380 or design planes that suit PASSENGERS not bean counters.

@@mikkorenvall428 It must be really difficult at the moment for airlines like Emirates with large orders placed with Boeing. In theory, no matter how late they are turning up, they should at least be fit to fly. Right now, I personally would be wary of any assertion of safety from Boeing or the FAA. I just don't see how a government regulator can attest that a good safety culture is in operation in every single part of the company. It's ability to spot problems has been repeatedly demonstrated to be lacking, with all the "quality escapes" that have kept on happening. It's not the FAA's fault - they've been repeatedly cut back and pummelled over the decades and have now been presented with the worst possible situation, a fully broken company. They can't fix Boeing. Only Boeing can fix Boeing, and they've proven unwilling to do so for decades.

I don't see the 4 engines as a negative. Surely it's possible to use all 4 during take off but then switch to 2 during cruise. That gives the best of both worlds, a safety factor along with reduced fuel requirements. Perhaps even a streamline cowl when engines are not in use to reduce drag. Also, is a semi cargo configuration so impossible, using the lower deck for extended cargo bay & just the upper deck for passengers? Engine improvements are always ongoing so newer engines can help further, but what about 2 smaller outboard engines used only at take off? Everyone I have ever spoken to that has flown on the A380 says it was the most comfortable & enjoyable flight they've ever been on, many having experienced Emirates. Truly a masterpiece of engineering that even the pilots love.

Emirates' decision to keep the A380 going as long as possible is why I say that an engine replacement program is being considered. Candidates will probably include a highly-modified GE9X engine with a different compressor core and smaller front to generate about 73,000 lb thrust (320.3 kN) or a new Rolls-Royce engine of the same thrust based on the _UltraFan_ technology demonstrator. with 113 operational A380's, that means Emirates will need about 600 engines, an amount that could make developing such an engine financially viable.
@mrfrenzy.
@mrfrenzy. 4 ай бұрын
The problem is the airframe limit of 19 000 cycles. Even if you replace the engine after that time the airplane has to be scrapped. If it does 2 flights per day that means 25 years since production. Making the massive development effort of integrating a new engine that will only be used for 10 years is not financially viable.
@johniii8147

Whilst the A380 is being filled and flown on a regular basis on at least some routes through some airports, that simply means that someone is going to have to build a replacement at some point. There’s dozens of A380s flying routes in and out of Europe that are regularly full, and that demand won’t disappear simply because the plane is getting old. (It may disappear for other reasons, but let’s assume not for this reasoning). So someone sometime is going to have to build a new airplane preferably with even bigger capacity. If A380s are being flown full now, that means there is more demand than supply. That means airlines are leaving revenue growth on the table, just sitting there, untapped. It’ll probably be Airbus that ends up making it, and it maybe just for Emirates. They really don’t want to do that, but the market may prove too demanding.

I go out of my way to try to fly on the A380. It just seems to be much more pleasant than any other aircraft I have been on. Some airlines fly routes where they use a mixture of the A380 and other aircraft so given the same airline and same class the flight on the A380 always seems so much better. Even when looking at the seat plans given by some well known websites and finding that they say there is no difference there certainly seems to be. I like the aircraft so much that I've even been known to choose one destination over another so that I can fly on one.

For a 2024 video, this video couldn't have more innacuracies... 1) it is still the answer to overcrowding (particularly in Asia & Europe), due to pilot/crew shortages, demand between hubs and limitations in airport expansions. 2) it is not making a massive comeback...it was making a massive comeback in 2021/22...you can argue it is now probably as successful as it was in 2018/19... 3) Emirates wasn't the only one who valued the a380...it was the only (or one of the few) carriers who was already experiencing limitations many airlines are AND it understood that the only way to economically operate the a380 was through economies of scale (i.e. have a big fleet) 4) the way the video plays out, it looks like upgrades and retrofitting just started - they started nearly 2 years ago; 5)passangers (and crews) are not warming up to a380...they have always been quite fond of it...the problem is with carriers who did found it to be an expensive/complex plane to run; 6) the a380 ressurgence wasn't caused by delays in "planes"...as mentioned above...crew and airport slot limitations AND the delay on the 777x....companies can and will buy the a350-900, a350-1000 - however, many of them got tied in contracts with Boeing before checking the a350-900 / -1000; 7) the range is 8200 nm, not 8000, for those of you how are not conversant with the nm - its nearly 400km more; 8) Boeing wasn't the first to understand hub & spoke was the way forward...if it was, it wouldn’t tank the 757 replacement and bin the deal with bombardier...by comparison airbus invested in the a321xlr and the a220 planes - the only real modern solutions for hub & spoke and point-to-point travel...Boeing realised it was too expensive to build a new 747 to compete with the a380, so it decided to invest in its big wide body seller - the 777 and invest on a smaller plane that could connect hubs otherwise not connected by the a380 (or as efficiently) - by designing the 787; 9) "few airports can handle the a380"...the a380 can pretty much be flown to every country on earth with at least 2 airports available for its size (including all major hubs)...including many small/medium size airports (particularly if in the past these were designed to accomodate military planes)...gate size was an issue in many big hubs, because of how overcrowding, but that has been dealt with in early 2000s when plane was introduced...the only place on earth were there is limited ability to accommodate these in most of the airports is the USA....but again...Europe and Asia are far more attractive & competitive markets in the industry; 10) it is not complicated to fill a a380 - the problem is that carrier quality becames a key issue...many US carriers did not embark on the a380 simply because a) there is no market for this volume of passangers and b) American proteccionism over Boeing; 11) the a380 cargo was cancelled as they quickly got to the conclusion that the market got saturated by a350,777 and 747 cargo planes...costs associated with conversion are less important...if they believed the a380 would've been profitable as cargo, they would've gone for it... 12) there are no talks on the a380neo...airbus has been very categoric on that... When you need to point an average of one innacuracy per minute during the video...I seriously suggest this probably needs to be canned and filmed again...

@@johniii8147 the fact is Lufthansa, Etihad and Quantas brought their a380 back and - in the particular case of Lufthansa and Etihad - it was something they mention formally and according to "insiders" as a key reason: i.e. shortage of crews (particularly pilots) and need to maximize passangers carried per airport time slot... Everyone bangs on about the hub-spoke model, but there's another factor in favour of the A380 and why it was designed. Aircraft slots at airport gates. An A380 will always be more efficient, taking up only one slot. A380 was built for passengers. B787 was built for airlines. As a passenger, guess which one I'd pick. Even A380s flown by airlines I'd prefer to avoid (i.e. Qantas) are demonstrably more comfortable than their smaller planes.

It probably will be Emirates dancing round Airbus and vice versa. I think Airbus will have to cave in eventually. The only way to avoid that is if several major European cities build significant new airports or runways to accommodate more flights. I can’t see how that could happen, there simply isn’t enough space or political will to make it happen. Even the point to point model needs bigger airplanes and some “non hub” airports are now effectively mini hubs in their own right. Here in the UK just Emirates are flying A380s out of Heathrow, Gatwick (the London hub), Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow (point to point style destinations, really, except that the A380 has turned them into hubs). I think there’s 3 a day out of Manchester

I would also avoid the 737 which is an 60 yr old design now that has had too many upgrades ….Boeing need to bite the bullet and stop milking that cash cow and invest in a modern design. It will be interesting to see how much money Airbus can still make out of the A380, via spares etc. And if over the lifetime of the plane/fleet, that will come close to paying back the initial investment and program costs.

not even close. Such a small base of aircraft that will only further decline in the next few years. Spares will be marginal revenue. 380s are already be parted out.

(Criticism ) Sir it’s my opinion that switching between shots of showing your face including your picture in Picture.in your production, is a waste of your production time, and is unnecessary. It’s also tedious and a bit annoying. ( this appears to be a trend that content creators on KZbin, are following). Viewers watch KZbin videos, because we want a mainstream media alternative. Your viewers are interested in planes , airlines and news about them. We are not interested in a video production similar to that of television or cable, just continue to gives us interesting news and good video clips of your feature topics.

This aircraft had its issues at the beginning with a BA flight I think it was dropping randomly and the freight door blowing off a qantas flight still way safer than a 737 max which I will never fly on ever

The A380 was doomed due to airport construction requirements to fit it in. This meant market expansion was impossible. At some airports operations had to be restricted when the A380 was moving on airport surfaces. From the ATC perspective this plane caused more problems than it fixed.

The airports that actually have enough demand to support the aircraft can accommodate it.

The problem it has is a lack of alternate airports meaning it has to carry a lot of extra fuel

Uses too much fuel , too expensive to maintain. It's dead. A350 and 777 Boeing is the plane of the day .

No it,s not. Only because of the 777-9 delays. In 2025 bye bye A380.

No way. I regularly fly on 777 and A380, with the same airline. Huge difference in comfort. The only competitor of the A380 in comfort is the A350, which I fly on sometimes. As a passenger I’m ready to pay some extra to take the A380 vs the 777. The 777-X cabin is the same of the current 777. The upgrade was done on the engines and wings. Which are important for fuel efficiency, but for the passenger’s comfort makes no difference.

@@luigifranceschi2350 the interior is wider, same seat width as A380. Btw the company,s do not want to pay more maintenance costs

@@Trancial-x-tion no. The 777 10 seats abreast has width of 17 inches per seat in economy. The A380 has 18. The A350 , that has standards 9 seats configuration has 18 inches abrest. And this is only for the width of the seats. Interior cabin pressure in A380 and A350 is much higher, humidity is much higher, and noise much lower. Might mean nothing to you, but on a 12 hours flight is quite a lot. And for business class is just another world. The business of the A380 on the second level is easily comparable to a first or more in any other aircraft.

@@luigifranceschi2350 no also 18 inch. You really think the 777-9 is only other engines and wings. 787 technology in cockpit and interior. Cabin pressure higher and less noise to.

@@Trancial-x-tion I’m not in the cockpit, so I don’t really care if the pilots have new fancy screens. The overall width of the cabin is the same, so the width of the seats is the same.

Hardly a massive comeback. More of a stop-gap work around until Boeing gets its wide bodies to the market. And it's really ugly, no upgrade will change that. Four engine commercial aircraft are dead and will never again be manufactured. Gone. baby, gone.

The A380 is so massive huge big astronomus, i´m still peeing my pants if i see one of them on an Airport. Can´t imagine that it is safe to fly with such a big airplane. Its so huge, its almost an flying Airport. They do this thing needs a Terminal? Drive it to the Airport entry and make everything in it. The Next A380 will have a swimming pool with 2 Water Slides, 2 Concerts per flights and Shopping Malls.
