Avocado green brown's and cream were kitchen decor in the late 60s and 70s. Not really the children clothes. Perhaps you might find corduroy flare pants in a milk chocolate brown like wrangler did in 1973. It was much red white and blue during 1975-8. I think the colors and styles are spot on as I had clothes in those colors at the time. The crochet vest is so spot on as that was all the rage from 1968-75, as well as turtlenecks.

I will be 57 this week. The Julie outfits are pretty spot on for the 1970s. I had pieces that were almost identical to her original meet outfit, a dress that was the same style as her birthday dress, but in loud bright orange, red and purple. My mother crocheted granny squares and sewed them into hats and vests. I had pajamas similar to her pink ones. I had pants outfits like her pinball outfit (in polyester double knit, not denim though). I would have killed for satin shorts. All my friends had them in brights or pastels with matching jackets. My mom thought they were “tacky” though, so I had to make do with terry cloth ones with satin piping.

The outfits scream 70’s. The skating outfit especially the shorts , sneaker skates , and that pink hair tie is so Cindy Brady it’s crazy . The crochet vest. , with turtleneck , and flair skirt “can’t get more 70’s.. Remember many items from the 70’s with bright colors carried over to the 80’s. That sports shirt design looks like 70’s Saturday morning cartoon logos.

😂 we did not wear just brown, avacado green and brown in the 70's as kids... I had a great navy floral skirt with a flounce and peasant top... I still might have it packed in the dress up box 😮 I had a purple skirt and vest with a white and purple floral top. I love Julie's line.... great video!

Honestly, I think the Journal books are more along the lines of kids bonding with their doll. Instead of them being like an espectator to a window in the 70's it probably feels like their friend lent them their diary to read because they're just that important. With the Journal books, Julie now isn't like a rellic of her time but a best friend to the kid who gets her.

I would love to believe this was the motivation behind this decision. I think it has more to do with the current literary trends in the target age bracket. The diary/journal/graphic novel-esque format is really big in that demographic. I don’t think it is a reflection of literacy as I’ve seen an equal interest among strong readers and budding readers. I think it has to do more with attention span that’s a direct result of their constant bombardment of media and its instant gratification. As an educator, it is not my ideal trend but I can see some teachable opportunities in the trend. The most potent being to encourage the child that enjoys this style to compose their own journal. I think it is going to be very interesting to watch how this evolves as the ipad generation grows up. I expect it to grow with them. Not sure if we can expect an explosion of graphic novels/manga more than we currently have or if this is going to grow into a whole new literary form.

I think we have a stereotype of 70s clothing that isn't really accurate. I recently saw an Instagram video of pictures from a real children's clothing catalog from the 70s. The clothes had many different color schemes. They were by no means all orange, olive green, and brown. In fact, there was very little of that. I saw a lot of purple and primary colors were really prominent. I also saw a knitted vest, just like Julie's new one and a skirt in that exact cut. I think Julie's collection is actually pretty accurate overall.

Yes! The rollerskating outfit is super 80s! I swear I had pretty much this exact outfit complete with the yarn hair bow when I was a little kid in the early 80s. But I love it!

I’m going to be getting the skating outfit and the summer outfit. Oh yeah,and the school outfit with the crocheted vest. I’m 60, and we wore all of those things! I’m happy to buy these items new, and not for the exorbitant prices on the secondary market. ❤

Julie’s new books are her journal and a mystery book. The mystery book is about a guitar and also shows a girl on the front cover with a book and a cell phone. I wonder if the modern character ends up with a guitar (Julie owned?) and Julie’s journal.

I'm 56, the seventies clothes weren't all dark greens and browns. Red, white and blue were very popular due to 1976, the Bicentennial. Also, Holly Hobbie and blue, red, and yellow patchwork were popular. There was nor a lot a pastel and bright colors.

I identify the most with the collections of Melody and Julie. I am a bit younger than Melody and by Julie's time I was in high school. Julie's BF meet is pretty bad as a whole but the pieces on their own aren't terrible. Someone at AG is earning their pay check, those new outfits are spot on including the hair accessories. I remember shopping for those little plastic barrettes at the dime store. Also, on the back of the journal is a pocket with 2 Flair pens peaking out. Those pens were new and really popular. Grab the new outfit quick. There is no such thing as a crochet machine and those granny squares are hand crocheted by necessity.

I spent my childhood in the 1970’s. I am not into the straight line eyebrows or blond hair. My CYO mini me wears Julie’s outfits. I am happy to see the new release outfits and the possible re-release of a few outfits. My favorite new outfit is the school outfit with granny knit vest (it is a knit pattern; not crochet-knitting can also be done by machine and crocheting cannot be mass produced). I also like and don’t have her birthday dress and summer skirt. Also hope to see the accessories! I am not into the skating outfit. However, I had light, bright blue shorts in the color of Julie’s shorts and a matching t-shirt around 1978.

Skating outfit is totally 80's looking. The skates are great. Nike running shoes were new and popular and that design was used for everything shoe. The top and shorts don't look like anything I remember but look more like something I would have bought for my daughter in the mid to late 80's.

Finally, New Stuff! I'm not the biggest fan of the two new outfits, but it's a start. I really want American Girl to release new stuff for Molly! I will purchase the Julie doll if she comes with a fancy box like Kit and the 35th Anniversary dolls did. I literally only purchased the Birthday Kit for her box and sold the doll to buy one with the chubby face.

I adore the new outfits. I don't have Julie, but I DO have Ivy, and I use Julie's collection for Ivy. She'll look amazing in the school outfit and skating outfit! I'm worried, though, that they aren't going to bring back the old outfits that they pictured and it's just a big tease; several of the outfits, I couldn't see the plastic logo tag, so it worries me that they're just showing old pieces from her collection to make a cute video. Which would kill me, because I don't own several of those outfits and want them so bad.

Hi. I'm currently watching your video and you just commented on Julie's skating outfit. I was born in 1967 in Southern California. I grew up there until I left for college. My entire childhood, tweens and teens occured in the 70s and 80s. So, rest assured, that skating outfit is dead on. 😁 The only way it would have been MORE on trend is if Julie had a satin jacket with knit rainbow cuffs that matched her shorts and t-shirt. Oh, and a gold charm holder necklace with a massive number of charms on it, which would have included a palm tree, a heart, and, most likely, a surfboard. The rainbow motif was very much in use, especially when paired with hearts, in the 70s. The Care Bears totally co-opted that for their own personal gain (like I said, I was teen in the 80s so I was not a big Care Bears fan -- Duran Duran, Madonna yes). The satin shorts with contrasting piping -- every tween and teen had a pair if they could convince their moms they weren't immodest (mine was not convinced). A blush pink satin with white piping would have been more common. And she really needs a Bonnie Bell Dr. Pepper Lipsmacker. ☺

❤❤❤Love the video! The last outfit is very familiar to early 1980s late 1970s. My mother had a favorite movie called Roller Boogie and it was all about the roller skating popularity of the time with disco. I did have a shirt like Julie's when I was in preschool in the mid 1980s and those colors were highly marketed due to Flashdance and just the time period being about nature and dancing...Reading Rainbow is a good source too because those colors were part of the opening sequence to the show. Plus with popular shows like My Little Ponies and Carebears, those colors were everywhere in early 1980s, possibly left over by late 1970s.

@@idreamofjonny I could definitely see this outfit on Courtney! It would remind me of the 1980s Baby Skates Doll. I think the original commercial is on KZbin now, but definitely these colors didn't survive after 1985. By late 80s it was all about Michael Jackson Thriller red and neon...think Madonna meets Wham...more George Michael than Wham. These colors returned just in time for 1990s Saved by the Bell, but this time edgier designs like pop art. I think if you include leg warmers and some hot pants to go with Courtney then Julie's skate outfit would be totally 80s.

6:23 I don’t think that kids attention spans are necessarily shorter I just think kids age out of dolls earlier. So a kid who is old enough to love chapter books will do great with a chapter book but my middle son is 9 now and he’s just now into chapter books. And yeah they use to be an 8+ toy but now sadly girls 8+ want skin care and not dolls anymore. I also have a 3 year old and we’ll play with dolls as long as we can 🩷 (I know it’s not all kids of course, but that’s why I think the books are getting shorter and easier)

In terms of the meet book being swapped for journals, I think unfortunately a lot of kids are way way below grade level for reading post covid. So I think ag’s target demo may be literally unable to understand the books

The designs of the new stuff are '70s (late '70s, early '80s in the case of the skating outfit) but the colors are 100% mid-'80s. Pastel pink, lavender, and baby blue weren't really a thing in '70s fashion, but they embody the mid-'80s. (Early '80s = earth tones, late '80s = jewel tones.)

I really don’t like Julie’s Beforever meet outfit but if you use the pieces as separates to mix and match with other clothes from her collection, it is cute. The jeans are cute with a cream top, just not the yellow vest, and the yellow vest is better with a plain jean skirt. Also, I don’t think AG will rerelease all those old outfits, especially because they put the year it was available in the video. That to me was a clue from them that the outfit is in the past and not coming back.

I guess, pricewise the school outfit will be $50-55, 'cause it's target audience is adults. Also, knitted vest is a handmade thing... The outfit with rollers will be $34-38, I guess, as it looks pretty cheap. In general, I don' t like any of new outfits, I would prefer them to re-release old ones. But I'm happy they produce new items for historicals. ❤️

Getting new Kirsten clothes... her extra outfits released in the 2000s weren't great. Her Trail outfit and Baking outfits were the only ones I liked, but because she is like the least popular doll ever, her vintage extra release outfits are sooooooo expensive. I was a Kirsten girl, I was a prairie girl... I still have my Kirsten, she's 30 years old this year, I would love to get new clothes for her!
