NEW AND NOTEWORTHY IN KNITTING NEEDLES

My mother is an avid crocheter. I do not crochet, but I have turned her into a Furls junkie lol. Several years ago she mentioned Furls hooks so I went to their site and bought her her first luxury hook for Mother’s Day. Ever since then I’ve been buying her Furls hooks for every occasion along with accessories like their beautiful yarn bowls, storage units, etc. I always make sure and get her the limited edition hooks as well. With all that being said I just wanted to comment about the Furls hooks in case there are crocheters watching and wondering if they really are worth the price. I would have to say yes because my mom absolutely LOVES them.

I have that exact set of Zings. I love them! Viewers should know that they have nickel tips but the body is aluminum, not steel or nickel. I like the surface because the stitches don’t easily slip off the needles, unlike metal Addis. A hint, if you lose the tightening keys, you can use a paper clip!

I love your mind and how curious you are.. having just turned 70yo I am not feeling as sharp as I once was. I still recall the evening when I was working towards my doctorate and the professor and I became involved in a rather intense argument regarding whether there was a definite , I believe we were using the DSM-111R this was several years ago, whether there was a definitive dx. For depression ALL NEEDING a psychotic component to it. I argued it did not and he argued it most definitely did. Of course I Gave in to his position but was still convinced that I was corrrect. During our next class , I received an apology that he had researched the topic and discussed it with his colleagues and all agreeing in my argument felt a clinical apology was in order. Since then I was not always so quick to think I was always wrong because I was just a student. I must admit as I have gotten older I wouldn’t be so quick to argue any point. So I defer to all your work. BTW I was going to school in NYC and now am disabled living with my daughter in Rochester, NY.. I had the wonderful opportunity to visit a clinician to whom one of our psychiatrists was transferring a patient multiple personality disorder to the wonderful psych. Division at the hospital inRochester, MN. If memory serves me right. It. Was a.extremely impressive place. Most cordially. Patricia Phillips

I have the Akerworks stitch gauge. I got it as a goodie at a knitting retreat. At first I didn’t understand what it was or how it worked and put it aside. Then it all came together and I was floored. What a great tool! It’s so much easier to count stitches through the “cross.” And those little feet holding it on to the knitting - genius!

I need to correct what I wrote earlier today. I bought 3 different Knitters Pride needles and forgot what was what. The incredibly loud ones I described below are Karbonz. I will also note that after one use (700 yards), the size printed on the needle is almost worn off - not a big deal since I always have a gauge, but still surprising. Apologies to Zings which I haven't tried yet. Also thanks again for another information filled podcast.

Hi! I have used the Prym circular needles several times. I really like them for knitting with "splitty' yarns, especially cotton and bamboo that have lots of plies. One of my needles also has a slight catch between the needle and the purple end, as you mentioned. I also have a Lykke circular needle. I don't have a problem at all with the join on mine, but I do find that the cord is too stiff which I find very annoying. Thanks for all the information that you give on the different needles!

I purchased the Akerworks Swatch Gauge and what ever you do don’t leave it loose in a knitting bag, mine was broken two days after I purchased it. I was able to glue it back together and it works fine, just sad it did break. The knitting bag is my travel knitting so it’s not just yarn in there, my travel iPad, knitting notions. Loved seeing these reviews. I do have an opinion on the Lykke interchangeable needles. I love mine I love the weight of them in my hand and the tips are wonderful. My experience with them is that they are not like the individual needles that you reviewed. Mine don’t have an edge to catch anything on their joints are very smooth. Hi Kristine, I like checking out new needles also. I have a 4.5 inch Lykke interchangeable tip in size 8 I bought on Amazon. I looked at the Lykke cords but decided to wait and get the needles first and see if they fit any other cords and they do fit nicely all my Knit Pick & Knitter's Pride cords. I like the look and feel of that needle tip. I also got the Neko needles in two sizes and have used them in finishing hats. Found them on ebay last year when I could not find them anywhere else. I have not used them to make an entire hat, but maybe I shall try that. I bought them with the intent that I did not love using dpn's finishing my hats for the same reasons you mentioned. I also saw the PRYM's on line and checked Amazon and they had a few. So I got the double pointed set also. Have not tried them on a project yet. I do like wooden dpn's and use them in making short items, like a blanket (www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/ten-stitch-blanket) I am making that starts in the center and works round corners and so use 6 or 8 inch dpns and usually put a needle point protector on one end so not to lose stitches. (essentially making a straight needle which is shorter than the 10 inchers out there) I really like the Deborah Norville dpn's and they are the ones I have been using. Just found them at a craft shop and tried them out. They are inexpensive and you can use a 40 or 50% coupon. They are wood I think but seem to have a nice, smooth coating on them and they have a good hand feel for me. Knitter's Pride Marblz is a nice needle too. I have two sizes of interchangeable tips that I enjoy using. They are a little flexible and I love the colors! I also saw the Knitter's Pride Zing and bought size 6 interchangeable needle tip and love it. It fits all my other cords, too. I buy a lot of needles on Handsome Fibers who have discounts and free shipping. They package their needles in a most excellent way and they always arrive safe and sound and fast. So basically I guess I have made quite a set of interchangeable needles w/o buying a whole set. Although I do have a set of Knit Picks Nickle Plated regular tips and Caspian Short Set that I started out with. Depending on my mood, I guess, I choose a needle to use on a new project. I have quite a few Knitter's Pride interchangeable needles already but I'm thinking of giving the Zings a try. I don't mind wood needles either because I feel my stitches won't fall off the needle as easily with wood as they do with metal. Hi, Dr. Kelly..I am currently using a Size 7 pair of the Lykke fixed circular needles to knit a hat and the join is smooth as a baby's bottom. I wonder if you got a defective pair. Take them back to the store you purchased them from (or get in touch with the online vendor you purchased them from and see if they'll send you a replacement pair.) I am enjoying them, but my LYS had only 32-inch cord lengths on the fixed circular I purchased. I think that's a bit short to do a hat using Magic Loop. I recently bought a couple of Zings and a Lykke, despite the fact that I much prefer smooth metal to wood. I found the Lykke surprisingly smooth and enjoyable to use. I'm not sure I will buy more but I do like it. The Zings are another story. Despite their similarity to Signatures, I always knew by the feel I wasn't knitting with Signatures. But the worst was the noise. We all knit differently so I'm sure not all will experience this, but they made a noise so loud I didn't want to knit in public. I didn't like the noise myself and couldn't wait to finish the project ad be done with them. So these needles - despite their slightly higher price - will either get given away or be kept for last, last resort. Too bad because the interchangeable set looks attractive.

It's strange because I have used both Karbonz and Zings quite a bit, and I haven't had any noise issues. A lot of times I will see a review and price isn't mentioned and then I go to look at the products ( like the Signature needles that everyone had to have last year) and the price is prohibitive for me! Knowing the price of things really helps those of us who want quality, but may not have an unlimited knitting budget! I looked at the Lykke needles at the yarn store and they are so gorgeous. Thanks Kristine! Always love your show. I've heard good things about Lykke but not happy to hear about the join you dealt with for your fixed circulars. I know you did a review of HiyaHiya sharps on your last review of needles, and I am finally using a fixed circular HiyaHiya and am having the same issue with the join. Not happy about it and I don't think I'm used to points this sharp as I pushed too hard on my index finger and now have a little cut. I'm an English style knitter so I use my left pointer finger to push the needle down. I feel like I'm always trying new needles and then always go back to Knitters Pride. I just really enjoy several types of their needles. I wish your husband could rebuild our deck. It needs it badly! Have a great week 😀

I have the Lykke short needle set and absolutely love it. The cord doesn't bother and loosened up a bit with use and I have had no problem at all with catching. I feel bad that you seem to have bought a defective pair.

I bought a set of the Lykke long interchangeable needles from Handsome Fibers during their recent sale. I did not see sloppy joins. I used the cotton ball test on several pairs of needle tips and I used the size 6 and size 5 on 2 different projects. I was particular about the feel of the needles because I usually use cubic needles for ergonomic comfort. I have had no discomfort using these needles yet. I believe it’s because the needle tips are light in weight. One reason I bought the set is I want to use the larger needle sizes on some new contemporary patterns and this set goes up to size 17! Thanks for your thorough needle review. I may try the curved dpns but I usually use magic loop. Also you saved me from buying the Prymm’s ergonomic needles. I don’t think they would suit me.

But I hope you are enjoying them. I ended up not loving the Prym needles or the Nekko curved ones. They are ok but are not ones that I will reach for a lot. XO

Sometimes, I believe that knitting needles are just personal preference, I find that I enjoy different types of needles for different types of projects and that the fiber may decide which needle may suit the project best. I am wondering though, if you may have gotten a "dud" with your LYKKE circulars, My short interchangeable set is just lovely. Smooth joins --- no snagging -- sharp enough without going through my fingers (I have a tendency to push with my right index finger) yet I have found that they do not split or catch my yarn as I knit. The cords become pliable as I work with them so I am very happy with the product. And an added benefit is that they fit with the "Knitter's Pride" cords (aren't they actually the parent company?) All in all I felt it was money well spent and am looking to purchase the double point set as well. So enjoy your podcast -- You offer such valid and interesting information -- just wish you had lectures here in Dallas, Texas.

I mostly knit with metal needles (my preference), but I do use wood or bamboo occasionally for the slippery yarns like silk. It sounds like I did get a Lykke dud and am going to try out another pair. Hopefully it will have the smooth joins everyone is reporting. It's also good to know that the interchangeable set will work with the Knitter's Pride cords, which I have a TON of. I don't think Lykke and Knitter's Pride are affiliated, but I suspect their needles are made in the same factory (along with the KnitPicks needles), as they are all interchangeable with each other. I did love the idea of the Ankerworks stitch and row counter. Other's mileage might differ. I was knitting at my desk , carpeted floor , it fell off the edge and has cracked and not once but broke twice. It was more brittle than I imagine it would be, was able to save it both times with super glue ( was saying some bad words the second time it happened) :-/ Still think it is a fantastic idea but perhaps it becomes brittle with age ??

Great video! Very informative! I started the What The Fade MKAL with a size 3 fixed circular Lykke needle. No problem with the join, it was perfectly smooth. What I did notice was the stitches didn’t slide easily. The wood slowed them from moving along. Maybe it would be better for more slippy yarn

I believe the teardrop tip on the Prymm needles stops the stitch splitting on pick up, easy to use. I’m in UK and readily available

I have a Lykke circular needle ,fixed I think 42 inches and I love it for sweaters. The feel of the wood is lighter than other woods and smooth joins. Your comment on the interchangeable makes me hesitate, they were good comments. But I do recommend the fixed circulars

I have and use the Akerworks swatch guage. It's easier to get a stitch and row count using it instead of some of the other guages on the market. Also have Prym ergonomic needles. Have two sizes of straights, 2 sizes of circulars and one size of the dpn's. I love using them. My stitches stay on the needles and don't slip off and lastely I also have one sock size and one hat size Neko curved dpn's. Neko curved dpn's work very well for socks. Love the products that I've purchased and as a new knitter, recommend them.

I’m currently knitting a sweater using Lopi yarn on the fixed Lykke needle. No problem with the join on this circular. I find them to be quite comfortable. I think that joining wood to metal with something with such a small circumference will probably not be perfectly smooth 100% of the time.

Instead of Prym curved dpns I use 3 - 9 inch circular needles. The stitches stay on the cable part very nicely. It's flexible as opposed to rigid dpns. I don't get ladders. They come in all sizes. They are made out of metal. I don't have to use stitch markers. I don't have to change needles when shaping a toe or the top of a hat. 3 - 12 inch circulars could be used when casting on a hat or working a sleeve. Just an idea for you to try. Happy Knitting!

I like the knitting needle storage ideas ( but not the book review). I particularly like the binders but not having to use all that plastic! So... I'm going to use fine jute (maybe snip a couple of threads for bigger needles), hem or overlock the edges and hole punch binder hole positions. Then thread the knitting needles a few times into the jute as I would in a needle case. I will embroider sizes in the top right corner of each 'page'. Just in case needles start to work loose, I might invest in a strip of rubber with two holes slightly smaller than the needle size and stitch it to the jute (hessian sacking). Packets I can inset into flaps like fabric rolls. These solutions will be as environmentally friendly as I can be.

My mother crochets for hours at a time and recently started having nflamd joints at the base of her thumb. I bought her the Furls Odyssey hook and now she's hooked on Furls. They have the Streamline hooks which are solid hand turned wood hooks and they're only $16 a piece. I've bought her several different Furls depending on what's on sale. Hi Heather (and your mom, too) -- I don't crochet, but I do use a crochet hook to pick up dropped stitches, etc. with my knitting. I think the Furls hooks are so beautiful and feel great in the hand. I'm glad your mom is enjoying them and that they're giving her the opportunity to craft more. :) I have some of the Flexi Flips needles and am planning to talk about them in a future video. :)

Kristine, I have all the Neko Curved Double Pointed Needles. I got the all the sizes for socks for Christmas last year 2016. I knit two pairs of socks with the 1.5 red size needles and a sock with the 2.5 yellow needles using Pairfect Sock Yarn I got last Christmas too. The curved needles are not bad I was really obsessed with them before I got them for Christmas. But after knitting two pairs of socks with them they are not to bad. I do agree they are pretty seamless way of knitting. But my very favorite needles are my 9 inch Hiya Hiya and Chiagoo needles. The Neko Curved Double Point Needles are 3rd in my favorites. Always enjoy your podcasts, and yes already ordered my Ackerworks swatch gauge! I am currently knitting with my new Lykke needles. Socks. They are 2.25, 40” circs. The first one I received did have a slight catch on one join, but the Etsy vendor and Lykke.com replaced it easily and promptly. The needles are guaranteed for life. The new one is sleek and very light to hold. The cord is flexible ( not like the one you showed) and the tips are pointy enough but not enough to split the yarn. I am really enjoying these needles.

To avoid laddering, When you start with a new needle, slide 3 or 4 stitches that were last knit. This will help to avoid the laddering. I just a few days ago found your videos. They are great.

I purchased one Lykke fixed circular needle at my local knit shop. I like the actual wooden needle part, but the cord had a horrible piece of extra plastic appendage attached that snagged constantly on my yarn. It was very annoying. I had to take a nail file and work on whittling it off. It worked, but for the price I shouldn't have to fix a brand new needle cord in order to use it.

I think you just ended up with a bad Lykke needle and should exchange them. I purchased fixed pair before purchasing the shorter set. I find them very smooth and comfortable. The cords are a bit stiff so I left them out straight to relax a bit. However the cords are interchangeable with Knitters Pride cords.

The issue of the nylon cords is that they stay curled up. The ChiaGoo cords are flexible, but, don't stay curled up when you take them out of the package. I feel this curling will distort your fabric, which the ChaiGoos don't do. Now, they just need to male a swivel cable.

Thank you for this. I would like to try the Prym ergonomic ones. I have the Neko in size 1.5 and used them for socks but am not convinced as I had two needles that broke as I was knitting my sock! The company did replace the broken needles but I haven't used these again as I find the hassle of losing my stitches midrow to be annoying. I think they need to work on the solidity of the plastic they use in these fine needles. I'm sure the bigger sizes will not break as easily.

I really enjoyed your review on these needles. I recently bought the Signature dpn's just to see how they are. I loved them except the main part of the needles have this strange feel which is hard to describe. It is probably just me but it sort of bothered me lol. I won't bother to buy any Lykke. I didn't really like the look and I don't use many wooden needles. The Prym look very odd lol. The ones with the bend I may try sometime even though I don't love plastic. They look like they would be a fun sock needle for the heel area. I usually knit mine with 9" circular. (I'm a new sock knitter so I haven't tried all the different ways to knit them.) I would LOVE to buy a Furls. It's the price that has held me back. I used to crochet a lot until it gave me a lot of hand pain. Now I do small projects in between knitting projects. Be careful they can crack in half. My husband repaired my Akerwork gauge with an acrylic glue but just guard them. I love mine so, I was heartbroken. But thankfully he was able to fix it.

The Lykke needle I have tried and I enjoyed knitting with them. I had no issues with the join. I will admit I do like the feel of a wood needle. The downside to them is the needle tip. Have you seen the curved dpns that have a small cable in the middle which differ slightly from the solid ones that you reviewed? I'm not sure what company makes them but have seen them on a UK site. After your review of the curved plastic needle I would be interested in trying a set - and I think your project of a hat would be perfect. Once again thank you for your honest and thorugh reviews.

Hi Lynne -- thanks for your comment. Are you talking about the Melodies of Life (in the box)? I had them and liked them, but they had the longer tips so I destashed them. These Zings are the same thing, only I got the shorter tips, which I love. For an interchangeable set, I think the Zings price at around $50 is very reasonable. I'm going to try another Lykke needle and see if the joins are smoother. I want to give them a fair chance. I just got a Zings interchangeable set. I had to exchange it because several of the tips were inconsistent. Some were more blunt and others pointy. I have had this problem with other knitters pride needles. They have a lifetime guarantee so you can exchange them but it is annoying. If I continue to find this a problem I’ll have to return them and invest in either the Hiya Hiya or Chiaoogoo set. It’s disappointing since the price is reasonable and I can use the cords from my Dreams set.

I purchased a single fixed circular LYKKE,2.50 or US1.5, for my socks magic loop. First of all, the cord will drive you crazy, it did me, always in the way,& I felt like the needle was going to snap in half, and they are made in India??? So I knitted the cuff & swapped out to my Chaigoo. My go to along with Knitters Pride. I own fixed, DPN, & interchangeable in both. As far as LYKKE, Clover makes a better wooden needle, so does Deborah Norville. Just my opinion. Great show & review. Thank you.

I’ve been curious about them, but my LYS didn’t have them in the longer length cord size that I like. Hi Michelle! Yes, I do use the shorter tips on everything (not just the 16" hat-length cords). I guess over the years I have just found that they work better for me and I find them more comfortable, yes. I feel like the longer tips are more awkward for me to use. You might try out a shorter tip and see how you like them for a project. :)

I've tried the Neko curved needles and they just didn't work for me, I felt like I was bending them so much that I was going to snap them. (well, I've snapped wood DPNs a few times!) I do have a Furls Odyssey crochet hook that I got when I was working on a big blanket project which ended up taking about a year - it's a really wonderful crochet hook, I really love it.

I tend to knit quite tightly - when I write, it's like I'm trying to "engrave" haha. The Neko needles never actually snapped/broke but the "flexible bounciness" bending of the needles was not the best for me. I do prefer metal DPNs, I have a few wood DPNs that have the permanent bow to them from my "harsh handling" of them. OH, I forgot to mention that I have tried the Lykke needles, they were nice and I had no issues at the joins but I don't see myself getting more or a whole set. I often wonder if issues at the joins happen when needles become so quickly mass produced to meet popularity demands.

The curved Neko needles definitely do come in 2mm - US 0 on German amazon, so they are around somewhere. I have no idea how stable the plastic would be at that size. Generally reviewers on amazon so far don't seem to be too happy with the needles (though, generally, not in that size): I see somebody else already mentioned the new addi needles that have a similar concept but with a flexible curve. A potential issue here is the short needle size in the hand, but since you like short needles (though, normally proably a bit longer than that) that might not bother you. They're called CraSy Trio around here, but seem to be going as Flexi Flips in the US.... (there are a few youtube videos showing these off, at least under the German name) Another thing by addi: shop.addi.de/de/nadeln/haekelnadeln1/addiduett is the Duett needle, with a crochet hook at one side and a knitting needle end at the other side. These seem like they might be nice for picking up stitches at edges. I own the size 2 mm/US 0, and do want to note, that, at least for that size, the size is given for the crochet hook end! I measured the size of the knitting needle and it was 3 mm. Now idea why those are different sizes, as, as far as I know crochet and knitting sizes in mm usually take similar yarn, on the other hand I DO use a smaller size crochet hook to pick up dropped stitches than needle I am knitting with, so maybe that works out! Also, I just saw the Prym ones in a local yarn store today and thought they looked interesting. Online reviews seem to be mixed, but every info is appreciated! The long taper seems odd. Maybe the testers were people who insert a lot of the needle when they knit? But then why the tip? I WOULD like to see these developed further! Esp. for beginning knitters something that helps manoever the yarn on and around the needle tips looks nice! (This is the good thing about crochet...) Somebody mentioned once, that their grandma had a handmade set of knitting needles (wood) with a little notch carved in to better flick the yarn, that grandma apparently also knit Portuguese, but I could see this working for many styles.

Yes, those Addi flex needles look very intriguing... I'm going to have to try those out when they are available for purchase here. The Duett needles are so interesting. I have a single tool exactly like that that I carry around in my notions pouch for picking up stitches and fixing knitting. It's very handy. Not sure if I would want to buy a set of them, though. I think the Prym needles would be good for beginning knitters because that little teardrop bulb at the tip will help keep the stitches from sliding off. Yeah, 2,25 mm isn't something to see often around here. Probably because it's not a round number. The closest thing I own is a wooden cubics set in 2,5 which makes smaller stitches than normal 2,5 because the needles are square. (And a very old circular needle that's probably actually a 2,5 that's a bit too thin.)

Hi, Kristine. I’m a new subscriber. (13:33) Why did you ask non-knitting students their opinion on interchangeable cords? I replayed that portion 4x to be certain I heard correctly. What viewpoints did non-knitters offer which would be overlooked by knitters?

Hello! And thanks for subscribing. The rating was done for my previous needle review video about 6 month ago. As a researcher, psychologist, and knitter, I knew that knitters would have their own needle/cord preferences. And they would likely recognize the cords. So I wanted to avoid any bias in ratings, and that is why I asked my non-knitting students to do the ratings. I just gave them rating sheets with instructions on them, and then they touched and manipulated the cords, and then made their ratings. I'm more confident the ratings are unbiased because these students had probably never touched knitting needles or cords before so didn't already have preconceptions about what they were rating. :)

Great review! I bought on Lykke fixed needle and the cord is terrible stiff and curled up. Would it work to dip the cord in boiling water? For the price, the cord should be better.

I purchased a number of bamboo needles and in the batch I received there are 6 Clover FLEX knitting needles. They consist of one needle attached to a plastic wire with a bamboo stopper at the end. Can anyone explain the proper usage of these needles, to me? Thank you

Hello - The stoppers are attached to one end of the cable and that works just like a straight needle then.

To a certain extent you can't really compare the price, Signatures are made in the USA and the Addi are German, the others are all made in either China or India. I love my Lykke, my joins are as smooth as butter. Every single Knitter's Pride, KnitPro and KnitPicks I have had (both interchangables and fixed) have fallen apart or broken.

Hello -- yes, I have heard that about the KP needles from a lot of people before. I personally haven't had issues with them, and I've had the Dreamz, Karbonz, Cubics, Melodies of Life, and now the Zings. But it seems like a lot of the issues have been with the wood needles. I love my Addi set, and it still a reasonable price even though it's made in Germany. I love Signature needles, too, but the price is so outrageous, especially considering that you have to buy a separate cord for each needle tip size. That's not very "interchangeable." But, yes, I understand what you're saying.

Thank you for this review. I was recently researching a set of interchangeable needles (wood)to use with linen. I have a wool allergy so I use linen, cotton, and some silk. I was debating between the Addi bamboo and the Tulip Carry C interchangeable needles. The Tulip have a swivel join and a rubber ring to keep them from coming undone. I didn’t want to have to carry a tool to tighten the join so they made my short list. I don’t think they are super sharp so maybe not the best for lace-not sure. In the end I ordered a set of Addi bamboo because I found a set for a reasonable price. I was wondering if you have used the Tulip needles?
