I would say except the preamps, which to me on 1st gen they sound much better and natural, even though not as clean I feel they sit better in this mix example - the 2nd gen seems to excel in all the other areas. I also assume we're used to the sound of those 1st gen preamps since this interface is probably the most popular one after the Focusrite Scarlett range and also in many famous records.

UAD doesn't need Reid to convince people to buy their products, they sell like hotcakes based on their quality and reputation alone, I know it's hard to believe when someone makes strong statements like "the best audio interface in the game, just got better". @@ReidStefanMusic Digital Mirror works great in Ableton. BUT I don't think this is exactly true with OBS. OBS only reads input 1 and 2 of an apollo. You would still need some sort of virtual cables/OBS ASIO plugin on a PC or "loopback program" on Mac to route it to OBS. Unless I"m missing something. Do you do something different? ALSO, different apollo's have different inputs. I believe this won't work with a twin as it doesn't have digital outputs. X4 and above only.

Hey thanks for this video. Please can you give us the audio files of the test in download ? Because they are not level matched. So it's not a fair comparison. I just record your audio in my DAW and check the difference, the Gen2 is 0,6db louder, so of course it seems "brighter". It's just louder. The only way to understand if the Gen2 is better is to do a real test, in ABX and perfectly level matched.

@@benderbi what do you mean „all that“? I also thought it sounds like too much of an audible difference for just being the result of better conversion. The old one can’t be that bad in comparison. So just pull the audio of the comparison and check the db. I came to the same conclusion, gen 2 is .6 db louder. It’s an old marketing trick. Level match them with one klick and the very audible difference between those two vanishes into thin air…

@@derdude8201 don't bother arguing with someone who is obviously steeped in ignorance. It's not worth the effort. I don’t think everything is about being negative, sometimes it’s just as simple as seeing things the way they are. Two things can be true, you can be an advocate for a certain brand (paid to do so or not paid to do so) and yet still see the advertisement in the video. I think people are disappointed in the fact that you are a long time user of UA, yet, not acknowledge that the some of it’s updates aren’t worth paying for seems gimmicky. I am also a long time UA owner, however, the things I would have liked to have see updated which we as long time users expected weren’t updated. For instance dsp, a/d conversion although they updated the d/a conversion, it would have also been nice to add both in’s & out’s ops for the Twin X Duo/Quad. If you support them cool, you get paid by them cool, but it’s not a worthy upgrade.

If you’re just a mixing/mastering engineer who literally never records vocals/instruments, never uses UAD plugins or Luna, and never needs to monitor thru UA plugins or AutoTune with low latency, you’ll get probably slightly better mastering conversion in a mastering specific device like Prism. @@dspoet1 like any other basic USB interface, prism is a big pain in the ass for recording with plugins in your headphone mix. The prism app is basic as hell, and the direct monitoring only gives you a dry signal. This is the drawbacks of mastering converters where brands invest 100% of their development into conversion quality and everything is completely bare bones basic. Apollo is king for the creative steps in the music making/recording process. Post production steps like mastering are a different story and set of tools required.

Lets be honest, the only real upgrades here are the better build, tactile quality as well as the new converters. Not worth the upgrade if you ask me, although the sound difference did surprise me. However the Gen 2's coming to market bring down the secondary market for the Gen 1's which is really nice. Because especially with apogees new rack units and with the X4 Gen 2 still unable to bypass the preamps (Big missed opportunity) I still think you'd be crazy to buy an Apollo X model short of an X6 brand new without already being an established business or already being integrated into the UA hardware workflow. However with the Apollo solo not being touched in any meaningful way compared to similar interfaces in its price point It's practically a paperweight in comparison to the X line, Gen 1 or 2 since the twin is probably going to drop considerably in price and you can already find used twins for like $500 easy there is literally no reason you should have ever buy the solo now.

Dynamic range is huge marketing thing measured by secret technic). Anyway dynamic range in 130db doesn't make much sense because it is under noisefloor. Prism has honestly measured 116 and is still better converters.

just a heads up, i recently downloaded the latest software on my macbook pro running Sonoma 14.1 and it fucked everything up. My mac was running slower, console would just bounce in place, UAD would't connect and my audio files on my acutal mac woudln't load when i press space bar on them. I'd give this some time before upgrading personally. I had to go back to UAD v13 which runs smoothely and personally i like the way the older console looked. I love the UAD plugins but the software fucks up so much whenever i have someone else at my studio and it makes them re download some version to use my apollox8P. So yeah, UAD is def over priced but their plugins are fantastic. only issue is then on the road ur stuck with them, u cant open old sessions without having a UAD box, even with spark then u need to be online etc... im in a love hate thing w them obviously

They don't create enough new DSP chip plugins for me to purchase a new one. The converters are good. BUT, not enough for me to get one without continued DSP library growth.

I’m guessing they’re currently allocating most of their development resources to growing their new native UAD Spark catalog. They’re probably aiming to match the size of their Powered UAD-2 catalog, which already has hundreds of plugins to choose from. This is just my prediction as long-time user 😊

@ReidStefanMusic I agree. Thus, it lends me to merely keep my current interfaces, and merely add a new mac mini via VEP 7 or some other software dsp over ethernet protocol on a 10G backbone.

I have a question about the monitor controller and surround sound. Does this work with all Apollos or only with X6 and X8? I am currently using my subwoofer via the daisy chain, but would like to connect it directly to the interface. Does this work with Twin and X4 or does 2.1 and so on only work with X6, X8? Regards :)
@ReidStefanMusic
@ReidStefanMusic Ай бұрын
Yes monitor control will work with the new Twin X because it has extra outputs for a subwoofer
@etsch
@etsch Ай бұрын
@@ReidStefanMusic This means that I can connect the monitors to Output 1 and 2 (Monitor Output) and the subwoofers to Line Out 3 and 4 and can then also control this using the large volume control on the Twin X. This was not possible with Gen1, as 3 and 4 were not adjustable, or is this only possible via the software? Thanks for the quick answer.

Definitely a good audio interface no doubt. But the shark cpu on these things is old and outdated. Been around since the 90s they could’ve put better cpus in these and that was a bad move. Quality a/d d/a great auto gain preamps great. Does it beat my apogee symphony io mkii special edition. Probably not on conversion, but everything else it does. Makes it a good potential switch and try these out.
@ReidStefanMusic
@ReidStefanMusic Ай бұрын
This is a valid point if your computer is stuck in the year 2015 but any Mac computer m1 or newer has more than enough process to handle your entire mix. Let the audio interface power your headphone mix in the background and keep product prices the same instead of rising with inflation like everything elsw
