Here is a difference comparison of the Universal Audio Apollo x8 Gen 1 and Gen 2 specifications from chatgpt 1. Monitor Output Dynamic Range Gen 1: 129 dB (A-weighted) Gen 2: 130 dB (A-weighted) The Gen 2 model slightly improves the dynamic range of the monitor outputs, resulting in potentially better sound accuracy in critical listening scenarios. 2. Line Output Dynamic Range Gen 1: 127 dB (A-weighted) Gen 2: 127 dB (A-weighted) No change between the two models for line output dynamic range, maintaining the same level of high audio performance. 3. Total Harmonic Distortion + Noise (THD+N) on Monitor Outputs Gen 1: -118 dB (0.00012%) Gen 2: -127 dB (0.000045%) There’s a significant improvement in THD+N for Gen 2, meaning that distortion is reduced, leading to a cleaner and more transparent sound. 4. Headphone Output Performance Gen 1: Dynamic Range: 125 dB (A-weighted) THD+N: -102 dB (0.00080%) Maximum Output Power: 150 mW RMS (into 300-ohm load) Gen 2: Dynamic Range: 126 dB (A-weighted) THD+N: -117 dB (0.00014%) @ 300 ohm load, -118 dB (0.00013%) @ 600 ohm load Maximum Output Power: 120 mW RMS (into 300-ohm load), 67 mW RMS (into 600-ohm load) Gen 2 shows a significant improvement in distortion (THD+N), providing a much cleaner headphone signal compared to Gen 1. However, Gen 1 has higher maximum output power at 150 mW versus 120 mW for Gen 2 (at 300-ohm load), meaning Gen 1 may drive certain high-impedance headphones slightly louder.

@@ifelovemusic thanks! From a post on the UAD forum "very little" has changed on the x16 gen 2 vs gen 1 and the other units were brought up to the sound quality in the x16 units. So you should be good. I had an original Twin and upgraded to the X8p and Twin X when my Avid HD Omni started acting up. I knew that the Twin X was suppose to have a minor sound difference vs the rack units but I never knew the x16 was the best of them all. BTW I never noticed any sound differences in my units. The Sonarworks feature will cost you $80 to add if you already own the software. I can run Sonarworks inside my Adam monitors so I don't need that extra feature. It always let you load/run different speaker or headphone profiles but you had to manually switch between them inside the software. I wonder if the new feature will allow you to load/run Sonarworks on the headphone out and the monitor out at the very same time instead of having to manually switch between the 2 each time. That might be cool.

Hang on, Auto Gain has been around with RME, Audient and others have had this as standard for ages. Room correction by Sonarworks integration is already on RME TotalMix FX. Unison has been part of UAD for years, why are we talking about this like it's a new thing? The one thing I would've expected is a massive update in DSP power. But, NO, where's the modern day processors? If you haven't upgraded the Processing power/ CPU's, why are you even bothering? Before you buy this, get a demo and a good idea of the amount of UAD plugins you can use at any one time. It's a lot less than you'd minimum expect. UAD are a bunch of dodgy snake oil salesmen. But they're brilliant Snake Oil salesmen. Nothing worth it here. UAD is so behind, their old plugins keep getting rehashed and given a new face and marketing and the one thing the market has been waiting for in their Apollo range is glaringly missing.

I do like that they went back to silver though! There has been so many missed opportunities over the years with the Apollo line-up. It started out really great but somehow they dropped the ball on being on the leading edge of audio interfaces. I've given them so many good suggestions on how they could develop it further but they just don't care. I was on them about auto-gain 10+ years ago when it wasn't available anywhere, now they finally added it years after the competition. And they have more or less ignored the live audio scene the whole time. It's disappointing to see such a promising company just waste their valuable resources.

Not a peep in the video about Windows compatibility. I had to dig deep into the new manuals to find that info and its pretty basic. Unlike the original product pages, they have carefully avoided bringing up any OS compatibility on the new UA Gen 2 product pages I just looked at. There are ongoing, unresolved issues with the drivers for Windows users that use the original Apollo TB3 products. Now we have an entire new generation of Apollo products while the first ones still do not work properly. UA clearly demonstrated it has a poor commitment level to fixing this problem. I have spent countless hours following UAs suggestions and jumping through endless hoops (doing all the work) to get rid of the pops and clicks only to have UA do an new update and break it all over again. I have nothing left to configure. They keep dangling the driver fix carrot that they are supposedly working on (For the last 5 years). This has been like Lucy with the football in Charlie Brown. So I ask one simple question: Is it truly (and unconditionally) Windows compatible?

This UAD-guy is so full of BS! Nothing's really changed .The time needed to setup the autogain, is the same time to set it yourself! And then the Sonarworks feature, it isn't even available yet! Just a bunch of BS!
