Neal Peters good question, it happens via a thermoelectric generator, in formula 1 this is done via the MGU-K, “collecting” the heat from the brakes (transforming kinetic energy to electricity. I am not sure if any road cars uses this. I just looked it up, the Toyota Prius will turn the electric motor to a generator once you hit the brakes, this is not as clever as the modern EVs. So I am not sure if any road cars uses thermoelectric generators that actually transforms energy from friction braking to electricity.

I drove the Jaguar I-pace at a launch event. Had some obstacle course session, Road test drive followed by some track time. Coming from a manual Porsche with amazing engine sound, I was actually suprised at how much I like the I-pace. The sudden acceleration and almost supercharger woosh sound is addictive, the handleing on track was really good with the low slung weight. The engine braking was something to get used to though with power regen. This thing looks like a decent contender.

@ErikUnger5 жыл бұрын
Increasing regenerative engine braking is on the downshift, because with a combustion engine you would also downshift to get more engine braking. You may have noticed that (or learned at driving school) that lower gears help you with managing the speed while coasting down a hill without having to apply too much brakes. High gears will increase your coasting speed.
@DuncanRiach5 жыл бұрын
Regarding the regenerative braking paddles: I think they are the correct way around. In a car with an engine, the left paddle, marked with a minus sign, changes down a gear; the right paddle, marked with a plus sign, changes up a gear. If you're driving down a hill and you want to use engine braking, then you would change down a gear by pulling the left (-) paddle, which would increase the engine braking. If you wanted to reduce the engine braking then you would pull the right (+) paddle. This is exactly the effect you would expect with the regenerative braking paddles: left (-) for more breaking and right (+) for less braking. Generally, the higher gears (right/+) give you less leverage and lowers gears (right/-) give you more leverage. The thing that is on the other end of the lever in a gas-powered car is that engine; in an electric car, it's the regenerative brakes. Most people don't think of the gearing in a gas-powered car as a mechanism for braking, even though it's often better to use the engine rather than wearing out and overheating the brakes. But even in the more commonly-understood use of the paddles in a gas-powered car, there is a similar effect to what we're talking about: when you want to accelerate more rapidly, you drop it down a gear (left/-) which applies a bigger lever between the engine and the wheels. At that point, unless you apply gas, then the engine will actually slow the car down a lot more than it would have when the higher gear was selected. Then you apply the gas and the engine has more leverage to apply the force needed to create the acceleration you want.

I'm looking for a plug in electric car with a reasonable electric range but also with a small diesel engine to get me home if I run out of electric power, do we have one

Hey @mrjww what was the range in the end of your trip?

I love the electric/hybrid era that is happening! I have a hybrid for my daily because I drive 38 miles each way to work, 45mpg! Only down side to it is it’s size and squat. Kia Niro, even has a Sport gear and does fly,Sits very low, and as an older person that’s had joints replaced, I want a vehicle that will let me have ease of getting in and out! This seems to fit the bill. Hope they bring them to US.

Brilliant appraisal of the e vehicle situation James and of the Audi etron @mrjww. I agree with many of your points Esp the point re usability on a daily basis - leaving something interesting/rewarding on the drive for spine tingling or long drive moments

What a relief then to get rid of all that exhaust noise and have silent running that does not attract attention of anyone including pedestrians and animals .

Crazy that people whine about the range when they don't even cover 100 miles all week, let alone non stop travel where it's an actual issue. Even then, there are chargers scattered about close enough to nullify that issue. Personally we have 2 of them here at work. I work 4 miles from home. I could drive all week on a single charge easily. This would be great for city living and everything that doesn't involve non stop road trips.

Totally with you on ‘give me autonomous’ To get from A to B isn’t enjoyable anymore and I’d rather be sleeping / reading / YouTubing while being driven in a pod!

Nice car, but that 241 miles of range is actually 204 according to the EPA. 6 year old Models S has 249 EPA and model 3 has 325.

not to mention the 500km range of the Kona and Niro EV according to var reviewer Bjorn. Also, those cost less than half the etron does

I've watched every videos on this channel, this one you can't help but notice the crackling in James's voice... we all feel your pain..sadend at the thought of electric cars being our future.. but it's life ' and we'll be doing something good for the earth.😢

Why are electric cars bad? I think they're awesome! I like the sound of an electric motor, and I definitely like their powerband.

Thanks for a well balanced review. It's a tug moving from combustion but as you say for commuting it makes sense. Was that Wales btw? 😁🤘

This is one of the only viable electric cars, yeah it’s expensive but unlike Tesla, Audi has a massive dealer network and due to there expertise in building mass transport, the build quality is better than a Tesla. Like you know that Audi will have perfect panel gaps and it’s trim will line up. I’ve seen videos of Tesla’s coming from the factory with huge scratches. So yeah in short I’m glad Audi has entered the market

Kia Nero, hyundai Kona, Hyundai Ioniq, Jaguar I pace. Lots of EV with a dealer network out there. All om em cheaper have better range then an Audi and are more fun to drive. Accept the Ioniq that thing is pretty booring to drive.

What happened to the wing mirrors being replaced with cameras in the door? So sad to lose the concept features. Also there is currently very limited charging points available especially when there are currently 3 main systems being used by manufacturers. I think full electric take up is still a long way off from your average punter. Rich toys atm.

Someone go tell Tesla this is a real electric SUV, this is how it should look, easy to notice they difference of a company that has been in the market for decades, the quality of design, functionality and build.
@clifflecroy69635 жыл бұрын
Funny that you say that this is how a real electric car should look while it is basically an exact copy of my gasoline powered Q5
@discoverlight5 жыл бұрын
Doesn’t that make sense to you? Audi have been making SUVs for years now, has good sales, which means ppl like it. So easy to believe that this is better than any tesla thing.

You said e tron range is 240 miles which is not true!!! Audi has already owned up and said there top range is 204 mile range, that's why 15% of orders have been cancelled with full refund.
@KristoferOlsson5 жыл бұрын
yep Audi realy missed the ballpark when it comes to real range. NO EV on the market use more electric for the same range as and Audi. Not even the Jaguar or huge Telsa model X.
