It's a bit like the dash and the infotainment were designed without speaking to each other. Unusual for Audi but my point is that its location high up like that works well, better than anywhere else and how it works should be more important than how it looks in a car.

As Baraa already said; not true. Also... People who buy an S4 want a highway rocket. They don’t do track days, so the driving characteristics of a diesel makes a lot more sense than a petrol for this type of car.
@volkswizard5 жыл бұрын
For a start nobody pays £65k, they lease or PCP them so there is a monthly cost. On top of that here in the UK the efficiency of the car affects the amount of tax the owner pays if it's a company car so that effectively is another monthly cost which is lower with diesel. Typical mileage of a car like this will be quite high so fuel costs will be significant and being diesel I'd estimate a 30-40% reduction in the real world again making the car more affordable to more people. Another factor is that with a high mileage covered, a diesel car should retain value better on used the market than a similar mileage petrol performance car. I for one will be looking to pick one of these up after 3 years with a load of mileage on it as it will be a bargain and have lots of life left.

It's not motorways or track days - there is an in-between these two types of driving, you know? If you just drive motorways all day, you're still not going to buy a 340+HP car, regardless of if it's a diesel. You'll buy either the 2.0TDi or, if you want more power, the 3.0TDi which, incidentally, is £10k cheaper than this pointless car, nearly as quick, AND produces far superior MPG. Yo so annoyingly albeit painfully adding maybe an extra 12/15 minutes to my commute I've started driving 20 miles down the M1 and parking my car North London and taking the Northern line into Central London for work, saving approx 250 quid a month this will go up to maybe saving 330 a month if I get to WFH 2x a week, rather than buying a monthly ticket from my home town into Central London! Anyway I've had my A3 2 door since 2014 it's been fine and I really like driving it, I just drove it home from my G/F's house and damn it can still move fast and it's only 139 hp but the god damn this is such a nice car to drive, the manual stick the steering wheel the bose sound system , the mpg is decent I usually get 60mph each way when commuting to work, insurance and diesel costs are good too. Anyway as it's been so long I was like somewhat jealous of S3 and S4 drivers , no way I would ever get a RS4 or above probably too powerful for me and I'm not a hardcore driver and the more I think about it the roads and traffice these days puts me off, however I am still in limbo on what car to get next, I have some savings and my next contract is okay, I don't mind spending 15 to 18k on a used car or go the pcp/lease route? what do you think. I probably will stick with Audi as I know a great mechanic who can stamp my services and never rips anyone off! so thats a good reason to stay with Audi. Any recommendations I've youtube'd the cost of running an S4/S5 or RS and tbh the more I think about it I don't see that many RS's or Porche's or any stuper fast motors bombing it down the motorway on a daily commute. Nonetheless I have 4 weeks to upgrade before the ULEZ expansion beings, whats a good uprade I'm not poor and I'm not rich but I think to myself life is short should I aim for a S3/S4 or any recommendations please? I have to say my car has been amazing my brother had an A5 before the chains broke as he never did the change at 75k but that was ages ago, what do you guys recommend I probably will be sticking to the commute to save on train fare's I like listening to podcasts on the way in to work. I have to admit if i got a fast car and the mpg was down to 22 to 25mpg each way that would hurt , I'm not tight but I don't like the idea of burning money but then again I'm saving 250 to 330 a month potentially on a monthly train ticket, so I could put that towards the cost of running the car?

@volkswizard5 жыл бұрын
Thanks again Graham. No it's very quiet, even the 2.0 TDI 190 PS A4 (40 TDI) at idle inside you cannot tell it's a diesel - I sat in one to start the day, engine on and had to check the spec sheet to be sure. As for revs, just watched the footage back and in manual mode it will rev to 5000 rpm red line before changing up, fully auto mode (drive) it's around 4200rpm and still pulling hard at that point. The traditional lack of top end puff in a TDI is a moot point as the box just gives you one long surge of propulsion all the way to the 155 mph limiter.

Your ending covered my question Andrew, I was going to ask if the exhaust tips are the same as on the S6 avant, horrible fake plastic trim which are blocked off, hiding the down-turned exhaust out of sight behind the bumper. That is madness for the premium of the S6 and is the reason I'd not buy one - even if I had the cash to do so. Good to see common sense applied on the S4 avant. Nice looking car, great to see Audi rightly have you on their books for press launch testing. Hope you closed the boot on the A2 prior to going on the test drive mind... ;)
@volkswizard5 жыл бұрын
Hi Darren, 've edited the video as that ending was a bit misleading - the left hand tips are real, the right had ones are fake like S6. There isn't a downturned exhaust behind the blanked off side, not sure if that's better or worse! Due to the tight time schedule it was all filmed in the wrong order so the intro was 0945, driving was 1440-1520 and walkaround was 1530-1550 so the A2 boot soon got shut not long after it was in shot and just before I left for home at 1620! Yes it's good to get an invite from Audi UK even though my numbers aren't all that amazing but I am sure dedicated brand viewers/commenters like you make all the difference as 10k views from people in the market to buy are better than 100k from schoolkids 😉
@darrencottrell55415 жыл бұрын
Ah, thanks for the clarification Andrew. I'm not a fan of the fake outlets as you can tell - shape of things to come though sadly and no doubt they'll not even be a design feature ultimately. Whilst we still have the combustion engine, I'd prefer manufacturers retained reality in design, even if it meant having one twin pipe vice two. The S6 avant approach is cheap and tacky, which is not a statement that should be said given the quality of the rest of the package on offer. Thanks for the kind comments, your following know you richly deserve more acknowledgement from the brands, and to be hoped the like of VW take note of their siblings faith in you. There are loads of benefits to diesel. Basically cars are marketed on emotion - racetracks, high revving engines etc but the reality is somewhat different and cars like these tap into the basics of automotive mobility such as low cost per mile, good range, environmental friendliness, refinement and top it off with huge real world performance rather than putting profligate petrol based performance the average owner would never exploit, before and at the expense of all else.

Sounds like a misfiring petrol in dynamic. I will never have the cash to buy a car as expensive as this, but if I was why would I choose to buy a diesel? If I had the money in the first place I wouldn’t care about fuel economy. The other thing is this, Audi sales of their RS4 & RS6 have plummeted because they have become too neutered. The BMW “M” cars have had their leashes cut and they are now the cars rich folk seem to be buying, I see more new M3, M4 and M5’s then I do new RS Audi’s with exception to the RS3. And also when you watch car wow drag racing the RS models against each other there really isn’t much difference in terms of performance gains between them. I predict this is finally the end of Audi’s rule at the top of the hot rod family car tree and this diesel S4 model is the bastard child of that demise. Thanks Audi for producing the best Petrol RS and S model cars. Future is Etron, and the dubber Rtron performance electric cars.

I'm not super excited about it either, but they are still doing amazing things, and until you sit and drive something like the new S7 or S8 one could never actually appreciate it. Diesel is the future for Audi for a lot of reasons, but I don't think they care to assert themselves in the powerhouse(hotrod) realm over the other german cars anymore. They Still have VW, Porsche, Buggati ect.... These wild diesels with electronic assists are quite the concept really, the torque is crazy. This is really just the beginning too.

The vast majority of people really dislike the touch-screen, yet you love it. The vast majority of people really dislike the diesel engine, especially criticising it for it's poor noise - yet you say that it "sounds like a V8" and "you couldn't ask for a better soundtrack in a car like this"! This is an utterly ridiculous statement. It sounds nothing like a V8 and the old car provides a better soundtrack. You say that "torque is what you want in the real world", yet it really, really isn't. If it was, all super cars would have diesel engines in them - why don't they? Hell, even the RS4 sticks with petrol. Nobody gets 40MPG out of that car. The more you think about it, the more utterly pointless it is. Why would anyone buy the S4 diesel over the standard 3.0TDi? It costs £10k more as a base price, is barely any quicker, has worse fuel economy and all you get is the, admittedly excellent, sport seats. For £10k! No, the more I think about it the more upset I am at Audi for ruining the S* sector of cars to chase extra money. The whole point of this was to try and lure 3.0TDi drivers away to spend another £10k and lure traditional S4 drivers, such as myself, into an RS4. It's bonkers and I really, really, hope this car fails.

Mazda doesnt move away from the diesel. The 2.2 bi turbo diesel Skyactiv engine is brilliant. And they did an AWD version of the Mazda 6 estate with this engine but not in the UK. It is available in Europe and you can take it to 210 bhp easily with 410 Nm :D And it costs peanuts and its beautiful as an estate and has no fake sounds:D

@volkswizard5 жыл бұрын
C43 and M340i sound better and are more fun I am sure but people actually buy cars based on more pragmatic reasoning like tax rates and mpg. The fact this car can match the performance of those and cost a lot less to run will see it sell in far greater numbers. The fake sound isn't ideal but it's a minor compromise considering what else that crazy stump pulling 3.0 V6 TDI can offer. If you spend a lot of time on motorways as most buyers will do, the differences between the S4's "more fun" petrol rivals are inconsequential yet the mpg gulf remains hugely in favour of S4.

So does it handle and does the engine rev?
@volkswizard5 жыл бұрын
I couldn't really go into detail on chassis as both S4s I drove had Dynamic Steering which was horrid but thankfully not available in UK. As for revs, well again tricky as changes up even in manual mode before it starts to run out of puff but it runs around the rev counter extremely easily.
@volkswizard5 жыл бұрын
Just checked pov footage and it revs to the 5000 rpm red line in manual mode (changes up automatically then), gets to approx 4200 in auto mode before doing so. Footage shows revs rising very quickly and due to auto, lack of a zesty petrol top end is a little academic as it's effectively a massive surge to the 155 mph limiter.

@@FOXHOUND4143 that's really unfortunate something as minor as the tips is influencing buying decisions in a negative way but I totally understand. I still don’t know who Audi are targeting... A 65k diesel truck sounding wagon? Rather buy the old RS models with NA V8 engines
@volkswizard5 жыл бұрын
The S4 will be bought by people who do a lot of driving for work so firstly they may not be allowed to drive an older car like a NA V8, also they will get paid money for fuel and it's unlikely they will get enough to cover the 18 mpg of an RS V8. They will also have to stop to refill on a regular basis which could be annoying. On the motorway where most these will be used the S4 is silent and refined, even at slower speeds it doesn't sound like a truck inside at all and the fake sound is fake but not terrible. An RS V8 is wonderful as a garage queen weekend car but people won't be buying an S4 to polish each week and take to car shows, they will have to work for their living and in that role they are an incredible package.

Why not just buy a diesel A4? Other than a badge, what does this have that the top of the range Diesel A4 doesn’t? A bit more power? It’s a diesel so who cares, surely you buy an S4 because you want performance as well as practicality, putting a low revving diesel in it removes that performance.
@Jabber-ig3iw5 жыл бұрын
So to sum up the comments, if you aren’t a petrol head you think diesel is sporty because of torque and like your car sounding like a tractor and doing vaguely good mpg, if you are a petrol head you want a car that sounds great, revs well and is quick and don’t give a fuck about mpg.

@volkswizard5 жыл бұрын
Sure that side are fake and the other side are real. I didn't actually choose which side to film in front of based on whether the tips were real or not, it was more so I could communicate with the driver & get him to rev the car. Not being someone who chooses cars based on their exhaust tips, I'd be disappointed if this S4 was a *petrol* having driven it. If you do the mileage it's possible you could own the S4 for the same overall price as an S3, as the finance cost + fuel cost per month could be the same. And just think, you'd probably get smoked in your S3 by a diesel estate car during in-gear acceleration and standing start on a drag strip wouldn't have much in it either 🏁
