Tell us more about sc gold. It is brand new and look like a keeper. How does the grafted tree grow? Up or spreading? Its season in relation to other well known varieties, do you know its mother? It looks like a daughter of Reed. Is it productive? An a or b bloomer. You are in a great position to inform us avo lovers of this new variety. @@AvocadoTalk it was well worth it. I felt like I was seeing some celebrities checking out your trees 😅 the SC Gold avocado you gifted me was really good. I found the taste to be stronger (more nutty/oily) than a Hass or Fuerte. Peeled very easily and had a very soft and buttery texture with no fiber. Excellent variety. I really hope your graft takes off

Congrats on the trees! You can't go wrong with Brokaw trees. My Brokaw trees have performed very well. They grow so fast compared to the others. You are getting quite the collection of avocado trees. I had to put the breaks on buying more for now. The SC gold looks tasty, what a find.

@@AvocadoTalk Yes, I’m in the same boat. My order from Epicenter came this past week. It was a Jan Boyce and a Hellen. I need to do some planting. My Carmen from Brokaw that I bought last year has been my best growing tree. It is about 12ft tall, tripled in size from when I bought it. It’s doing very well. Best of luck with your trees.

That SC Gold looks similar to Carmen (Phoenix) in terms of shape, cross-section, color when ripe, ease of peeling off the skin, etc.

Yeah a larger version of a Carmen. To me it's kinda like a Sir Prize but with a bigger seed. Should grow well for you since it originated in Santa Clara. Thanks for watching!

If you got luck and have a around rootstock then it's possible to grow a decent sized avocado in a pot, I recommend the larger pot the better. These trees I show are clonal rootstock which is a double grafting process but you are guaranteed a rootstock of your selection.

Sc gold not new grafted way back in 1970s, just getting more popular now, large spreading tree , 1 pound black skin, ripens with zutano in northern Cal, medium seed size, good flesh color not real pale, reported as a type A, probably not a bad alternate bearing .

Not new but not a lot of people even knows about it. The name was only given recently by the current home owner. Not many in southern California even have it so I consider myself lucky.

Hi Mark, talked to them last year but got serious in February. Initially they told me delivery was in June. They worked with me and we found a delivery for someone else that was close to me in April. There was space on the truck since I didn't order a lot so they accommodated. Minimum order at the time was 20 trees, I've heard that they raised it but have not spoken to them lately. Every tree I've gotten from them was beautiful, would totally recommend. I want more so I've already started planning for next year. Good luck and thanks for watching!

Also although they were all 3 to 3.5 gallon sleeves, they were all bigger and more mature than anything I've gotten from any other nursery. Some nurseries buy them and pot them up and sell them as 15 gallons. I like that they are clonal, there is a reason large orchards and commercial growers buy Brokaw.

Pros and cons, relatively healthy and a little slow. Growers want consistency, if every tree was the exact same size with the same amount of fruit they would be happy, keeping management and pruning cost down. For me Duke 7 is a fast grower.

I got one from epicenter as well but seems to be extremely slow growing. Is that the case for everybody else?

@WebSurfingIsMyPastime It usually takes a couple of years for us in NorCal for the roots to develop and you see lots of growth. 1 out of 250 the seedling it was grafted to just doesn't grow much. I have one tree which seems to just not to grow and I suspect it's the seed but I have also seen some bounce back.

@WebSurfingIsMyPastime It does happen. Jeff in Modesto has a 5 foot tall Bacon which is 10 years old. In truth it is why the orchards want clonal rootstock. They are not necessarily better but the growth rate is predictable and uniform but I have seen Zutano seedlings outperform clonal rootstocks too.

All growing really good, no issues. One benefit is I feel more confident that I actually got the variety that I want because I've been burned four times already by getting a variety that turned out to be something different.

Hi bro new subscriber I just purchased a sharwil on Duke 7 how do you feel about the soil it comes with I see it has sand I'm keeping it in the 15g pot for a while do you think it will affect the roots going forward since it's mixed with tree bark

Hi there, so after planting my Brokaw avocado tree, it does not look like it has a lot of wood products so I just planted it without washing the roots. I did plant it raised about 6-8 inches above ground and I recommend you do that too if you were to plant it. If you pot it in a 15 gallon, I would use native soil + perlite + sand or Top Pot or cactus mix instead of potting mix from HD. I would only lightly wash La Verne Nursery avocado tree root ball, their mix is almost all wood product/saw dust. Not good long term if you have very heavy clay soil with bad drainage. Out of the ones I bought from you. I only planted Fuerte on Dusa. It’s thriving. I gave my dad a Lamb Hass on Dusa and it’s also taking off. I sold the rest, and am using a couple as Frankenstein experiments 🫤lol. If only we knew about brokaw before planting a dozen trees. Haha thanks again.
