Hi REM Glad your back. Great minds think alike for 2/3 😂. Before I listened to your picks I immediately selected without hesitation Edranol, Nabal, Nimlioh As my top 3 B’s Nabal- beautiful foliage , tree architecture, fruit. I think overall the most beautiful of all avocado trees. 1 in Vista, 3 in SJ all are thriving. Edranol - home town champ from my home town - had to pick it! I’ve got 4 growing in SJ - the Brokaw tree I got from you is kicking butt. The Epicenter tree planted around same time much smaller. 2 more potted Brokaw Edranol doing well with just the most beautiful looking leaves. Nimlioh - me being an optimist now - it’s more philosophical selection- Frink states it’s the bestof all the giant avos and it’s listed in Popenoes book as being one of the best of the giants. How the trees I have in Vista and SJ remains to be seen. The vista tree is 1 yr old and was looking good in April last I observed it. AJ just did a great new video. I was actually able to get 4 Nimlioh from Ellen and that almost didn’t happen bc she was too worried about the quality of the trees since her mother tree is not a healthy one. I’d like to hope that somebody could convince Brokaw to start propagating it- it seems AJ is obsessed with doing that which is great! As for Sharwil I’m giving up on it in SJ but my Vista tree was looking very good at about 8ft when I observed it in April. Was planted 2017. The 3 Sharwil I have in pots (2 Brokaw, 1 Epicenter) will go to Vista eventually or die a slow death in pots. The one Sharwil I have in SJ has been struggling for 3 years but it also was planted in the harshest part of my yard that gets heavy wind. Wind screens did make a difference but I finally decided to give up completely on this Variety for my Bay Area microclimate. What’s crazy is a few feet away from my struggling Sharwil is a Lamb and a Mexicola Grande that are thriving and both with nice young fruit sets right now. Maybe fact they are A’s makes the difference. Another variety I’m totally giving up on is Pinkerton - but it’s child the Palo D Oro is thriving in my yard and looks to be a real winner. The 1 old Vista Palo tree thriving as well.

Hi Pat, totally agree with you that the Nimlioh would be on my list if I had a tree. I'll probably reach out to AJ to see if he can get me one or just drive down to subtropica and pick one up. I tried to buy one at Bonita Creek and was just a wasted trip there. They tried to sell me one that was in terrible shape and just a twig for $100, told them NO. My next trip down the 15, I'm going to stop by Maddocks and pick up some more Reeds and maybe GEMs too. Thanks for watching!
@SVmathfarmer

@@AvocadoTalk Funny story about Maddock I asked them would they consider propagating Nimlioh. I was looked at with a blank stare “ huh, never heard of it “. Warning about subtropica - I went there asking for GEM and Edranol and they don’t let me look at any selections and bring out 2 substandard trees I planted in Vista. The Edranol is now dead and the GEM barely hanging on. Never should have bought bc the trees looked lousy and it was unethical of them to sell but I’m an idiot for buying them. I’m totally with you on putting in more Reed and GEM. I don’t think you can have too many Reed. I only have 1 GEM and am very tempted to have at least 3 but it’s just getting ridiculous at this point

@@SVmathfarmer I remember back then asking local nurseries if they could order and get GEMs, they were so confused. I would call back and they would say "you are the guy that wants a jewel avocado"... Then on the flip side these guys know all sorts of other trees, there is so much out there. The wife is asking for more limes and other fruit trees but I still want a couple more avocados, a little crazy...

@@AvocadoTalk good to keep the wife happy. Mine loves tangerines so I recently planted her a Clementine and an Owari Satsuma (space a had a young Carmen I ripped out due to root rot) . Good to have a variety. I’m all about stuffing as many trees in as possible. Nothing better than squeezing a glass of fresh OJ from our Valencia tree on a hot summer day. My next mission is try to get some lychee trees to thrive up here. Probably just wishful thinking. Very difficult due to space limitations in yard now.

Nabal is a very good tasting fruit, its similar to Reed but I still like Reed better but that's me. Sharwil is my favorite B type and Fuerte is also sooo good. I have not had Edranol so I can't comment on the taste. I hope your trees take off. They look very healthy. I just got back from Hawaii and I was able to find some Sharwil avocados and they were so good. I saw that your Carmen is flowering which is great. I checked my Carmen today and I have some BB's so far so it's promising. I hope most of them stick but we will see.

Hi Sam, lucky you, we backed out of a trip with the family once COVID hit, need to plan one soon. Another data point that Sharwils are really good. My Sharwil from Brokaw is growing nicely, what a difference compared to La Verne. You are closer to the ocean so your Carmen show really do well, congrats with the bbs. I really wasn't expecting more flowers and was just excited they popped up, it's a young tree so we'll see how it goes as it grows.

@@AvocadoTalk Sorry to hear that COVID ruined your trip. I hope everyone is healthy. Most of the time Brokaw trees grow so much better then other nursery trees. It’s hard to beat the convenience of going to HD and buying a tree for 29.95 though but you do have to wait a bit longer for them to grow compared to Brokaw trees. My Carmen that is flowering isa Browkaw and it grew so much this year especially when compared to my other non Brokaw Carmen that is older.

If judging by taste: 1.Fuerte 2.Fuerte 3.Fuerte 😜 Haven’t tasted an Edranol (yet) got the one from Brokaw planted. A lot of folks around me have old Nabal trees though. Excellent taste, but low production (in my anecdotal experience) Sharwil is excellent, but still doesn’t compare to a late season Fuerte (if one likes the super oily nutty flavor) Great video as always. The Queen I have in ground right now planted Oct 21 also from Epicenter is just in a state of suspended animation right now when it should be in a growth phase like all the others in the warm weather. When I bought the 20 Brokaws in liners recently there was no Queen or Nabal and none of the 20 was clonal either. @AvocadoTalk
@AvocadoTalk 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Shane, yes and yes. 1.0 has been dug out and currently in a 15G but actually doing ok now under a big jacaranda. 2.0 was a weak tree and I didn't shade it so it got burnt. I could have babied it but just not worth it IMO. All the different varieties of avocados all have different characteristics. Some are really cold tolerant and some aren't. I find that the Sharwil is very sensitive to heat. Also, it might be that it was just a really young tree that I had so this last Brokaw looks like it was more developed so I expected to do much better. Thanks for watching!

Do you prune avocado plants? How to do it right if so? What have you sprinkled on the leaves and what’s it for? Thanks. Pete :”)
@AvocadoTalk
@AvocadoTalk Жыл бұрын
Hi Pete, the white stuff that I spray on the tree is called Surround WP. It is kinda like sunblock and helps with bugs. Helps the young new growth stay cooler and keeps them from burning. Recommend for sure for young trees. I pruning typically in the fall and try to shape them to maximize light. My goal is really to keep my trees smaller so it isn't crazy huge. Most avocados take well to this. Also trying to keep them smaller 15 feet tall will allow me to be able to access fruit much easier. If you have deal branches, go ahead and take them out. People say Christmas tree shape is good, I'm more of a wider lower box with more light to produce more fruit. Don't be afraid, they are tougher than we think. Another thing to note, when they are young, I just let them go crazy and build a lot of leaves and roots. You can shape them later. Good luck and thanks for watching!

@@AvocadoTalk Wow! That reply was fast! Thanks for replying! I wonder what surround WP is made of? Chemicals? It would also be very helpful if you could make a detailed video on avocado plant pruning practices and techniques to keep them short. Love avocados! Thanks again! Pete :”)

@@AvocadoTalk I see! So it’s just clay! That’s a natural product then! 👍🏻 If it does keep insects at bay that’s really great! Does it come in powder form? What’s the mixing ratio for spraying on the leaves? Looking forward for your pruning videos. :) Keep up the good work! Thanks. Pete :”)

All of the best Hawaiian cultivars are type b avocados. The only good type a here is green gold but I haven’t had very good luck with that type of avo. Sharwil is an awesome avocado and we get it at work during the winter months so I have eaten tons of that avocado; I have three small ones in the ground and my next door neighbor has a big tree that she lets me pick from. how long do you typically use the shade cloth for the younger trees?
@AvocadoTalk
@AvocadoTalk 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, typically just the summer time or when temperatures are over 92-94F. That temp seem to be the tipping point for my young Sharwil. Once it cools down, you can take it off. Some people have it year round with young tree, I only put it up during the summer heat. Your trees and leaves will tell the story. Depending on the variety, you could probably get away with just Surround WP. Last year I didn't use Surround so I shaded all my 5Gallon small avocado trees and this year with the surround, they didn't need the shade cloth. I have both Surround and shade cloth on my Sharwil, just extra cautious, once the roots get established then I think it will need less attention. Good Luck and Thanks for watching!
