How about a bill to fix the back registration.. you have a car that is 3 or 4 years back, and it costs a ton of money to get it back up to date. It's a pain to even get them up to date. Most people give up and just leave it expired or sell them to the next guy to deal with it. Registration cost is really getting out of hand, $500 to $1000 each year for a car or truck is just nuts....

Hawaii has some of the most expensive auto insurance in the nation for some reason. Usually an expired safety check means no insurance (required for the safety check) and without an updated safety check you can’t register the car.

not for "some reason", for very specific legislative reason. The "back registration" policy makes buyers of a used car responsible for registration fees for any/every year it was not registered - and many buyers do not find out how much this is until after purchase is completed. A couple thousand dollars for someone else's paperwork most people are not willing/able to pay. Leads to titles not getting filled out while cars change hands multiple times - often including a sale where the title has been lost. Fully functional car, but unable to/can't afford to register, no extra money, car needs to get used. Insurance companies run on statistics ONLY. A larger percentage of unregistered cars = higher risk. Hawai`i has several of the steepest roads in the entire US = higher risk. Hawai`i has a taste for jacked-up Tacomas/F250s and muscle cars, both categories that are assigned as higher risk. High probability of flood/fire damage = higher risk (and as similar risks on mainland increase, it continually bumps our assigned "risk level" even higher).

Lot of Safety Check Station are stopping doing safety check and other Safety Check Station need to you make an appointment. So, when you make an appointment, they are so back up your appointment can be on the follow month by than your safety check will be expired. If the City and County can solve the problem of the overload of safety check station needed than get rid of the safety check and add the safety check fee to the registration. That goes for motorcycles not enough station, so an appointment needs to be made.

You watch when they start towing vehicle with current tags all it takes is one neighbor that makes a complaint on your vehicle telling them that they can’t see coming out of a driveway, I was not blocking or anything the car wasn’t abandon I just parked it there twenty mins before they towed it, all that did was make someone else is problem my problem

I hope these law makers read these comments. Multiple reasons cars are sitting. Stolen then abandoned, too expensive to update, mechanical problems-to expensive to repair, bad roads to driive on but higher taxes. My registration is $687.00 a year. Insirance is 125.00 a month. Just paid off my car after 3 years of payments now its down. $2700 to fix + labor and storage fees. On a 1 income household, single parent. Needless to say im on the bus now cause food and housing is more important. Cost of everything here is beyond livable, you guys want these cars off the roads help find a better solution then just towing. If not this cycle is going to continue.
