Never really been a fan of SUVs, but the comfort and sense of well being over a long journey were palpable. Something like an X3 M40i may be my next car. If they still make them… And true enough. I’ve had my G20 for 1300 miles. Not yet used adaptive driving mode. And fantastic to hear your new Govt. isn’t going to blanket limit the autobahns. Thomas, why is non-animal seat coverings more sustainable? The animals are being raised for the food anyhow, so it makes sense to use the skin. Is the alternative man-made material good for the environment? How is it made, what from and is it recyclable or breaks down naturally? I'd be interested to learn more bout this.
@autogefuehl3 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for your interest in this topic. As a start, please tune in to what the animal leather industry tried to do here with our channel: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pIHCdKmCocZ5oqs In general, depending on the animal skin grade, the animals are specifically raised for this matter. However even if meat would be the reason no.1 in other cases, the hide remains one of the most profitable body parts. That means: If manufacturers put animal leather in a car and you accept it as a customer, you give your money to an industry that earns money by oppressing humans, animals and destroys the environment, you make them more profitable. Also, if you turn the argument around "meat is the waste of the leather industry" you realize how biased the argument is. After all, would you care for which body part you would murdered? Or imagine someone robs you on the street and beats you to death - would it matter to you if it was for your Smartphone or for your purse? The animal agriculture industry occupies 2/3 of all farm land on this planet which cannot be used for direct human nutrition then. That is extremely inefficient. The no.1 cause for deforestation is the animal industry. It is also one of the biggest contributor to climate change. The amount of land, resources, energy and water being used is beyond imagination. If you are interested in how the animals are being treated and transported in the global leather industry, watch this footage: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qpzNdHSjppaSbqc Note that the footage is genuine and was recorded by a highly decorated investigative journalist in Germany I know myself personally. For the alternative, you can either use artificial fabrics which can be made from recyclables (we have already shown a lot of vehicles that use great fabric seats from PET-bottles etc.) or more and more also from plant-based materials (like Pinatex). And even if you would create a seat completely with petroleum without a recycling share, the amount of oil being used for that is nothing in comparing just to once fueling up your car. In practical reasons, fabric or microfibre seats are just more useful. You do not sweat in summer and it is not cold in winter. And there are also new leatherette materials available which are superior in every aspect: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q2qXiouAbJeIiqM Using animal skin on seats is a major issue of animal rights, human rights - and after all just of common sense what is better both for the environment and just more practical and more luxurious for the customer. We cannot change what we have bought in the past (that also counts for ourselves of course!), but with more information and compassion we can change how we decide in the future.

@@autogefuehl Thank you for your detailed reply, I appreciate this! I watch the videos in the links you provided. I am a forensic analyser of data and play devils advocate to try to obtain my own view on subject. there are some very general macro sized points that is where I begin on this subject; without the Apes, that evolved to be humans, being forced to eat meat to survive, we wouldn't be here. Humans are omnivores and being just another animal of nature I can not have a view that eating another animal is murder. Killing an animal and not making use of what it provides is more like murder. How we kill them is another matter of course. Playing the devils advocate, without some bright spark thousands of years ago realising bringing animals alive back to their settlement and breeding them, there would not be any wild animals Ieft in existence. They would have all eaten long long ago. On the data provided by some organisations I have to say it doesn't stand up to scrutiny. All organisations present skewed findings to support their cause, and it is often frustrating to find that one can not trust the findings. But, I will investigate a lot more on this topic. On another macro point, humans consume vast resources, whatever they are and that is the problem. The best thing any of us can do is have less than two children and hope to reduce the population significantly within 100 years.

Thanks Thomas. I've got a new X3 which I've had on order since April 2021. UK BMW Dealership informed me 1st delivery to UK will be from May 2022, with my ordered X3 LCI M40I likely to arrive June 2022. A 14 month wait for a new BMW X3. Guess it is the reality of the world currently, but frustrating to see them already with customers in USA and Europe! Would be interested on your views Thomas between Adaptive LED Headlights and Laser Headlights. Expensive option at £1500 for Laser, especially on UK roads! Long, straight Motorways, I can see the advantage, but normal UK roads with twists and turns along with road height loss or gains, make the additional distance for £1500, far less attractive, as this generation of BMW LED Adaptive Headlights, are more than adequate. It is why i have not added this option to my order. Note the X3, as alluded, in UK market no longer comes available with with phone wireless charging, rear heated seats or rear seat lowering by a button in the rear of the boot, as well as the white seats, which i would never order again anyway (Have them on my current X5 and jeans have stained the seats terribly which are impossible to clean-up and remove the staining, even with the paid for extra 'guard' protecting interior spray added from new). Thanks for a good review as always Thomas
