Found an old kissing cranes Robiklaas Solingem with black mother pearl scales & brass hardware while going through a box of my granddad's things. Tiny bit of rust, but still very clean. He immigrated from Germany as a kid. German ingenuity & craftsmanship is incredible. 4 in. handle, 3.25 in. blade, 2 in. secondary blade, and a beefy cork screw.

Burg Castle in Solingen has lots of battlements built with oak beams. That's where I image the wood is coming from. If you're ever in the area, the visit's free except for the inside of the main building. There's a big free parking lot higher on the hill so you don't have to use the one with parking fees.

I love how Boker uses awesome, quality, recycled materials that they break down into pieces they use for their knives. An incredible way to re-use recycled materials from actual coolsl things. Unlike the garbage recycled materials held together with glue they use, then give it a fancy name like Micarta and people will buy it. I really don't like anything but real, natural material for handles like wood, bone, or steel. There is just something great about a knife that has a solid material as a handle. That makes the knife feel sturdy in hand. All the 100s of different named plastics used in knife handles has taken over the industry and I hate it. It makes every knife look cheap and especially feel cheap. But isn't making these knives any cheaper. I can not justify paying $100+ dollars on any knife that has a plastic handle. All this g10, FRN, micarta and fancy named bs plastic can go away already. I'm sick of it.

Acid washing 01 tool steel huh? 🤦♂️ Can any metallurgists here please describe to the community why that is a terrible idea?
@the_trash_mane58755 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't anything acidic severely fuck up the steel and make it severely lower resistant to rust? The acid wash ruining the finish causing it to be weaker afterwards
@gcarver57864 жыл бұрын
Spicy Soul As I understand it, it’s basically giving it a pre-existing patina - many people use fruit acid to speed up this process when they receive a blade anyway. Patina obviously protects the blade from rust, so I’m not sure there’s any fuck-up involved here.

They have multiple sub-brands. Böker (Manufaktur Solingen) knives are made in Solingen, Germany. Then there's Böker Arbolito, made in Argentina. Böker Plus are original Böker designs, often collaborating with knife designers from all over the world, made overseas (though not all China, some I believe are made in Taiwan, and there even are ones made in the USA or Italy). Böker Magnum, their budget brand, are basically all made in China. A large number of Magnum models are pre-existing designs they market under their own name, sometimes with slight changes.
