First of all, the S400 MKII replaced my KEF LS50 Meta. Easier to drive, better with more variety of genres, and much wider & taller soundstage, and fuller in sound. When I had questions about the speaker and emailed the company, the CEO (Mads Buchardt) himself was kind enough to address all the questions I had regarding the speakers (in the weekends also). You can't go wrong with a company so dedicated for a premium customer experience on every level. 😀

Mads is an awesome guy. He helped me with my original S400 crossover overhaul. WBT speaker terminals, Jantzen standard/crosscap for the woofer with Duelund Silver Foil crosscaps for the mid/woofer circuit. For the tweeter I went with Jantzen Alumen-Z (HUGE capacitors) with Duelund Tinned/Copper crosscaps all with VH Audio wire (copper for woofer/silver for tweeter). Man, Mads' design SCALES extremely well. Completely changed the performance of the speaker, but kept its fun character. I also went with Gr Research NoRez for all the insulation which made things even more clear and punchy and smooth. I think the crossover design, time alignment and choice of drivers really are top notch in synergy and respond very well to crossover upgrades. Amazing product out of the box and unbelievable speaker to take to the next level with upgrades. Absolutely love them and loved your review of both MKI and MKII.

@@patriktakacs I had both (LS50 Meta, not the original LS50) and tried them out side by sife for almost a month. The only thing the Metas had over the S400 MKIIs was the 'holographic' sound & the details. This sounds fun at first, but it doesn't work well with all genres / media formats. Buchardts are much easier to listen to and are 'fuller' in sound. When comparing both speakers with an added sub, I expected the Metas to win, but no, Buchardts do even better. I ended up returning the KEFs and will probably keep the Buchardts for any forseeable future.

What speaker stand height? 24”, or 28”? Ear height is 40” but these speakers have an upward rake angle. Thanks!

For the mkii’s, Buchardt recommended that they should be at a height where your ear would be between the two drivers, but I’ve found that having mine ear level to the tweeter is better overall. Amir of ASR determined that they measured better when tweeter-ear height. Right now I have them upside down to achieve the right height.

(really want to hear if someone has experience with these 2 - I love Totems and have a pair of OG S400's)
@ZeroFidelity3 жыл бұрын
The problem you're going to have with getting *reliable* advice on this matter is that there were 5 or so versions of the Totem Sttaf during its 20(ish) year life cycle. Worse yet, there's no indication of what 'version' you have. Totem would change the voicing depending on popular voicing trends at the time along with crossover supply availability/cost. The result is a number of similar looking speakers that have a very different sonic presentation. For example, one Sttaf may have a warm and slightly polite sound, whereas another may have a brighter and more energetic sound. Having said that, here's my subjective take. The Buchardt S400 is objectively a better speaker in almost every way and offers a more consistent listening experience. If you listen to a huge variety of music, want something thats fairly easy to work with, need to place the speaker close-ish to a wall, yet still want a full and warm sound, then the Buchardt is the way to go. Having said that, my best music listening sessions were with the imperfect yet charming Totem Sttaf (circa 2001). Yes, they could get shrill. Yes, they could be a pain to set up. But once you got them setup right, I think their spaciousness and tone is very special. But you'll need to like their sound and have the constitution to work with em'. Good luck!

In their forums Buchardt says (might have even been Mads personally) that he thinks the ceiling of the S400 mkII is something like 10-15% higher than the A500, but they are very close and the A500 is much easier to set up, more flexible with the master tunings, and probably is cheaper than buying a good enough amp.

Good afternoon Jay's iyagi! I am currently looking for a replacement for my Airpulse A100 active monitors. And I choose between three active speakers for sounding my desktop, namely: Buchardt Audio A500 and System Audio Legend 5 Silverback Active and KEF LS50 Wireless II. It so happened that you just wrote about all the speakers on the soundstagesimplifi resource. In this regard, I would be glad if you could make my choice a little easier by answering a few questions) I myself am from Russia. And for some reason the Audio Legend 5 Silverback acoustics are cheaper here, namely about 2000 euros. At that time, Buchardt Audio A500 was already about 3900 euros. But I managed to ask for a discount, so the A500 will cost me 3200 euros. But it is still 1200 euros more expensive than the Legend 5. The KEF LS50 Wireless II will cost 2500 euros ... Hence the first question - could you confirm that the A500 plays a higher level and has every right to charge an additional 1200 euros for its sound? Second question: which acoustics provide more detail and resolution in sound? Third: Who has a wider and deeper stage? Fourth: Do the speakers have noise when they are idle? The last subjective question) Which of the presented monitors would you recommend in your opinion? I would be grateful for your answers!
@wokthetalk30792 жыл бұрын
Hi Jay, As I recall Mads from Buchardt shipped you the SE version of the originally S400 by accident that I believe you kept after reviewing it. Am I correct in my assumption that during this review when you are comparing the ‘Mk2’ with the original, this it is with the ‘SE’ you have in your possession? The original ‘SE’ was made to a higher standard (not in China where the originals was manufactured) but in Denmark, not with MDF cabinetry but HDF and most importantly with upgrade internal wiring, Jennson Cap’s and better crossover components. I understand the ‘Mk2’ has lighter paper mid base but are the components in the crossover better then the original SE? If one was to pair the ‘Mk2’ with a subwoofer, can you recommend a make/model and crossover point for such a pairing? Would the ‘Mk2’ be a good from left and right channel speaker for a 5.1 when not used in a 2.2 stereo setup? Unfortunately I don’t have the space to dedicate to a listening roomy and this my home theatre, living room and listen will have to occur the same space. Should I decide the ‘Mk2’ it is have to perform double duty and I hope Mads can recommend a good timbre matched center (rear) left and right channel for my set-up.

Very convincing, Jay! The Buchardt is back in my shortlist. But how can a speaker with the same drivers and enclosure lose bass? Or: if they changed the woofers...why? To reach a pricepoint? I don't get the whole picture. How can you attain broader soundstage and imaging without changing cabinets and/or geometries? And when things were getting interesting you started going on a sidetrack on jazz cafés. Your subjective take is interesting, but this is a case where I would need klippel measurements. How can a speaker be "forgiving", yet "accurate" if you feed it imperfect recordings of which there are many, unfortunately! :-)

Hey Juan. I think you missed the parts of the video where I explain the enclosure, midbass driver and crossover changed.

Nice detailed review of the Buchardt. Your hair is looking healthy again, good to see. Give this product I use, Uppercut Deluxe Pomade, a shot. It is going to get rid of that slight dryness you still have in the hair shaft and it washes out immediately.
