Science Centre opened in 1969, designed to last 250+ years. - 5 years ago, a developer family* close to Doug Ford bought 60+ acres adjacent to the Science Centre (in red on the map) - One month later, Ford announces that the last stop on the new Ontario Line subway will be...The Science Centre!!! - This week, Ford closes the Science Centre immediately. Permanently. Its property (in yellow) will be "repurposed." His engineering report says the Science Centre needs maintenance - does not say it needs to be closed.

I am not sure that they have budgeted away 400 million for repairs somewhere. Most of the repairs have been deferred.

@@haggismcbaggis9485 deferred, yes they know the annual maintenance costs and they squandered the $$ on other things. Be aware they make lots of $$ from entrance and other fees. Ford is dirty and wants the income to go to his friends on the waterfront.

@@Lorrdd Not-sea's don't like science or education in the hands of civs. Ford has been caught enriching his friends more than once. You can read it or watch it anywhere. He didn't invest in maintaining the building. This is a fact I guess you are unaware of. There are ppl right now willing to give tons of money right now to fix the "issues". The same architecture is in several other buildings, why aren't they shut? this is a simple fascist assault on knowledge. History has shown it over and over by cons. Doug ford has been caught more than once. He enriches his buddies and invests in private health care. It's not hidden. Peace buddy.

@@Lorrdd More than one engineer has looked at the report, and there was no need to close it. Only about 2% of the roof panels are a problem.

@@mikeb5664 100% factually incorrect. 25% of the panels are rated as medium-extreme risk of failure. And BTW, 30% of the roof wasn't inspected due to access issues.

I am actually very saddened by this. As an adult of 56 years, I fondly remember the science center and the many days I spent there as a child learning. This was a giant building and I am sure the building along with the land is very valuable! I suspect another reason for this.

It's nothing like what it used to be, from the front door to the back it was just booths with videos playing, every video was someone in a lab coat pretty much just reading the government propaganda lines you see everywhere else.

The Scotiabank arena was created preserving structures from the old post office. They could have temporarily closed the science centre and fixed the roof. Doug Ford needs to re-sign.

Politicians need to go and see what education you are getting from this Center. We went and 90% of the exhibits were not working. It was not cheap to take a family of four. Why was the place not maintained they surely made money from many visitors. Think of the next generation of kids and build a new Center with a planetarium. Make it interactive and exciting. We had to take our kids to other cities to get this experience (Chicago to name one city). Stop blocking development it makes no sense. If you reopen the Center as is don’t charge families to go in… make it a free visit. Think of the kids!!!

That's basically what it is, I tried taking my kids there recently and from the front door to the back it's filled with videos of people in lab coats lying - the highlight of the day was the fear porn movie at the end where they told the kids that all the water on earth could evaporate with global warming and it has happened before - cut to mars.

What should go there, more bland unaffordable condos ? I think the science centre is a national treasure, at least within the city of Toronto. If they do move it, put something that's equally enriching/educational.
