I know your content is mostly video-oriented, but do you have a recommendation for workflows for using this lens for VR180 *still* photos? I'd rather avoid trying to individually edit photos in Da Vinci Resolve and would rather stick to as much Lightroom and Photoshop as possible. I'm using the EOS RP, so the Canon VR utility won't be an option (I'm also working with Vuze 180 DNGs). Currently using some scripts I made using Sharp JS and FFMpeg for crop and equirectangular conversion, but I'm just starting on setting up a workflow.

PC work just fine. I use PC and Mac. I am just saying HEVC is not the best approach but PC EOS VR do not have DNxHR render. So for PC, I will use all my old tutorial on resolve or Mistika VR render - which work perfectly fine and faster. PC also has render speed strength - as I mentioned in the video, better GPU is faster. But the best combo can be render out in Mac into ProRes and drop it into PC for editing :)
@jeromelozano
@jeromelozano Жыл бұрын
Once again, thank you Hugh for this very interesting tutorial ! If I understand correctly, it's better to use Mistika VR to manually stitch moving footages (with gimbal), when the edit is done, using timecodes (like an edl) ? Because the automatic stitching in EOS VR Utility will use the first frame of the footage and will create a "bad" 3D if we move the camera ? Am I right ? Also, sad there is not an anaglyph view in this VR utility to quickly check the 3D. Still, this is a fantastic workflow for a shooting with the camera on tripod.
@hughhou
@hughhou Жыл бұрын
Yes or not. If you movement is controlled and slow, EOS VR doing a pretty good job as well. Also lighting is a huge factor as well. Low light with motion blur will not be good.

OMG that would be amazing!! BUT you still need to denoise, and it's better to do it on the 'RAW' with neat video (at 1fps.. but still) no? edit: OK watching your video I can see you talk about this, but if you 'defish' the noise would also be 'stretched' at the top and the bottom, and I would assume davinci/neat won't be able to remove it like they can when the frame is directly from the sensor in RAW?
@hughhou
@hughhou Жыл бұрын
NeatVideo understand stretch noise as they design the software to handle that. Not so sure about Resolve tho. You are right, and that is good reason to do NR in the new EOS VR. I just not used to do that and a lot easier to just do it in Resolve. Also Resole render a lot faster. NR and Sharpen significantly slow down the process.

Hearing just what happens on other cameras like r6 1 and 2 or even rp. Do you get aperture control or no? I take it the two circles fit in 16:9? Or do you need a 3:2 option? Don't have enough funds to get to r5 and especially when at that level it'd be hard not to go to r5c for 60p 8k. But well settling on r6 ii 4k 60p and having an option for 6k 60p later adding an external recorded is making some sense. Instead of settling on unsynced two GoPro choices. But have still not managed to find out what you get when putting it on those other cameras. I could get by no aperture control I guess but knowing if the circles fully fit in 16/9 would be useful.

@rowanking123

Hey Hugh, love your work. Hoping you can help with a couple of questions Canon has failed to help with! 1. Have you or anyone you know had issues with the H.265 4:4:4 output from the EOS VR Utility on PC? I get glitchy dropped frames randomly, sometimes after 20 seconds, sometimes after 15, which totally ruins immersion (note it's only with the H.265, no such issue with H.264 or other export formats). Happens with my R5C Raw footage but ALSO with my old R5 MP4 footage (so its a H.265 issue rather than a raw handling issue). Everything else works fine (so can't justify a Mac just to workaround this bug). I have followed your tutorials and am getting good videos otherwise, but unusable. 2. I have followed all your exposure tips and have finally gotten noise levels down on the R5C but it is still SO noisy compared to R5 footage I used to take. Assume that is the RAW format but don't know if my noise level is normal or not. Do you ALWAYS denoise your raw footage even when you have nailed exposure? I need to, so wanted to see if that is normal or not. Thanks a lot! RK
@hughhou
@hughhou Жыл бұрын
1. I don't use it b/c the format is not editing friendly. But it can due to your GPU. What GPU you are using? It require lots of processing power. / 2. Yes, RAW footage has NO DENOISE so it is very common it is noisy. But you can turn it down using EOS VR Utility - the denoise and sharpen slider work wonder most of the time.

@MeinVideoStudio
@MeinVideoStudio Жыл бұрын
Well lets say Reaper is better until BMD decides to give us a 16 Channel Outputbus. But you can create a 4 Channel output for 1st Order Ambisonic Projects. And You can create 16 Channel Tracks to Rotate and Move things in 3rd Order Ambisonic. And at the End of each Track you just Downconvert it to 1st Order using a Decoder Plugin. I mainly use the Free O3A Core. And you use Automation in Fairlight to get Lav-Mics from Moving Objects into the Scene. I already recorded an English Tutorial but since my Channel is German i don´t know where to upload it.

Hi Hugh, thanks a lot for all the great and helpful tutorials you're doing! I have a question: what are your best settings for a readable VR180 video on a Meta Quest Pro or Quest 2? I tried to export in MP4 H264 8bit (8192x4320 59.94P) but it's very laggy on the Quest Pro. Any tips? I only use for now the EOS VR Utility because my plugin is not showing up in Premiere Pro...

@@fd6375 My workflow ist: 1. EOS VR Utility 2. Davinci Resolve (Color and Denoising) 3. Import / Export via Premiere (because I dont know ho to set metadata with Resolve (180 VR) ... and with step "2." and "3." you can render to H265

@@Chris-K Hi Chris, I was wondering which parameters you use when you export in H265 with Premiere. When I export with Premiere in H264 or H265, encoding quality is very poor VS EOS VR Utility H264. The problem is that with EOS VR Utility we can't change the bitrate so in 8k 60fps it's very laggy on a Quest Pro headset. With Davinci Resolve I can't try 8K because I have the free version. So far my best option (for playback on a Quest Pro) is MP4 H264 8k 30fps with EOS VR Utility.

Thank you for the good news. Unfortunately, there is no 180 3D camera in sight in 2023 either. Do you think that the combination of the R6 Mark II and the Canon 5.2, which is still affordable for me, delivers better results than my Insta360 EVO, even though the R6 only films in 4k?
@hughhou

I believe so from specs but I can really give you an answer as I do not own a R6 myself. I am at CES right now and will know more about new VR180 camera tomorrow when I scan the trade floor.

Watch previous tutorial right here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bGizdKOnq8yjjrc - you need to click the source file, and it is under the source file effect panel.

@@hughhou I have this same problem. It says it's installing, but nothing shows up in the source file effects panel. It is extremely frustrating. I was sharing your excitement about Canon updating, but each time it says it installs properly, nothing changes. My theory is that I might have the R5 HEVC installed vs the R5C one, which just tells me it is already installed. I cannot find a single shred of information on how to uninstall it. I was really hoping to not have to use the lengthy process in DaVinci Resolve.

Hi Hugh, the plugin Canon VR Utility for Premiere works whith Canon 8K Raw files?
@hughhou

Yes but I won't recommended. Use the EOS Utility stand alone to transcode first into ProRes. RAW file will drag any highspec computer down for editing. You want speed and efficiency when come to editing.

Can you help??? I "downloaded" and "installed" the Windows version of EOS VR Utility. It shows up as a program. But when I click or doubleclick on the program or its icon nothing happens. Is there a trick to the download??? I've tried on both a W10 and W11 with the same result. Is there a Canon Official help contact? Or even a Canon VR Users support Facebook group??? Thanks!

OK. It seems I have to subscribe and activate before the program works. That's strange, because some document says there's cost "for videos over 2 min". So less than 2 min would be free, no??? Also, finding the place to subscribe online is not easy.

Actually, it will work without subscription for video under 2-min as well - that is very strange that you need to pay to use it :(

@@hughhou I'm using a Moza gimbal, yet even for a slow pan it is warped. I hadnt finished the video when I commented, and will try out what you have in there, but it still seems odd that my earlier videos were not warped like that makes me suspect that either the Canon VR software is causing it in the conversation, or there is a lens alignment issue. I just tested the Canon R5c 8k60p video. So hella, noisey! And it is hard to work with, even with a high-end PC with 3090ti. The Zcam files are so much cleaner and faster to work with. Raw LT is disappointing. @hughhou

You need to convert them into ProRes to work with. And use the NR feature to denoise. RAW meaning noise untouched - just like Z Cam RAW.
