Thanks for the update Hugh! Aside from a small issue/bug with the new stabilization feature, it's definitely helping me with some R5 VR video I shot in Europe a couple months ago! There is one odd issue though with the post stabilization. I filmed a few clips with people dancing at a wedding on a tripod. The EOS VR Utility software actually CREATED artificial camera shake into the exported video clips that wasn't there in the original clips! It did it for both the Blur Correction and Trackability stabilization. After reviewing the clips in my VR headset, I've concluded that the camera shake was tied to the amount of people dancing within frame. The more people dancing the more camera shake was added, and vice-versa. It's like the software thinks the people dancing is from camera shake, so it tries to stabilize them, hence added camera shake. Luckily those tripod clips were good enough without post stabilization that I can still use them. Hopefully Canon can improve upon their post stabilization analysis algorithms!

You could try mocha instead, then you can select static parts of the shot and ignore the dancers

@@hughhou so far it seems to work fine on my Mac (M1 Max). It seems to have solved a nasty crash that I was experiencing on several 8k captures with version 1.2, so extra bonus points for that! I am planning a trip to Italy in a couple of weeks and this comes at a perfect time… I will have very limited space for supports to carry with me, so being able to shoot hand held will be great! It will put the new utility to the test!

I just got the R5C and love it, but as with every other VR venture I have been on, what I envision and what the software allows do not match up. My external power and CF Express have not arrived so I figured I would learn the photo side by taking some timelapses. I got everything setup and took my photos but when I tried using VR Utility to convert the images, I learn that only the jpgs can be loaded. That is like going to a vineyard, paying for their most exotic experience, and then they bring out a bag of cheap pretzels and a Schlitz. I am sure I will love using the software for raw videos, but jpg only on the photo side is a real bummer.

After trying the VR Utility again, even with denoise at maximum and sharpness dialled in, it still delivers sub par results with noisy black levels. Resolve denoising unfortunately seems to be the only solution which as you mentions is very render time intensive. Another issue is only being able to export to DPX or HEVC on windows, no ProRes Option. As much as I would like to use the utility for ease of use, the Mistika VR -> ProRes -> Resolve workflow seems to be the best for now.
@hughhou
@hughhou 7 ай бұрын
Indeed. We switch to full Mac workflow now on Canon VR180. So we do have ProRes support. We use the stabilization render from EOS VR Utility, turn off denoise and sharpening and handle that part in Resolve. In our mac pipeline, Resolve spatial denoising is not that bad - we turn off the first node (denoise / sharpen) to color and just turn it back on before render - seem to be very streamline workflow. Resolve has GPU acceleration so it is pretty fast. The stabilization is crazy good tho if you have "mess up" footage like someone bump into your camera or a gust of wind - this is like the only fix!!
@JohnLOfficial
@JohnLOfficial 7 ай бұрын
@@hughhou Definitely! Resolves denoising works magic. I'm still looking at around 8 hours total render time for a 20 min video across Mistika and Resolve. How do you find the difference in stitching quality compared to doing it manually in MistikaVR? Is it comparable or still a step below?

Hi, thanks for this video ! What settings did you like best in terms of sharpening and nr inside EOS utility? Do you always use the same numbers or does it depend on the video ?
@hughhou
@hughhou 7 ай бұрын
Oh it depends on the video, ISO settings and the expo. Hit the 100% button to zoom all the way in so you can see the noise and play with settings to taste. 3 on NR is way too strong on ISO 800 (base) so I will only use on ISO 3200.

When you shoot 8K30 do you add interpolated frames in post? I used to have the Vuze Xr and the low framerate ruined the footage. I wonder if a future headset player will be able to add them for you.

what VR camera is the best to shoot VR 180 movies in highest quality. is it the 12K Camera from FXG - FM DUO or the Canon . Thank you sir

I don’t have the FXG 12K new one. So I can’t tell you. But we shoot “high end” movies on Canon R5C and RED V-Raptors for Meta (coming out soon…) So yes, we use Canon for high end VR movie. When I said “high end” meaning Hollywood level talents both directors and actors… And we tested our gears to the teeth. RED is also what we use just to point it out

WHich headset is best for watch 8K VR videos? I think quest 3 right? Coz Aero and Pimax is too expensive and not worth it for videos. what od u think
@hughhou
@hughhou 7 ай бұрын
Quest 3 is the most affordable as the newest chip (highest specs for any VR headset right now) allow you to play 8K 60fps smoothly - that is double the frame number. Canon shoot 8K 60fps so - max out the max level camera out there for VR. So... yes so far Quest 3 win. But we will see what Apple Vision Pro Specs first to know. Yes, all the older headset is not gonna match as just CPU and GPU - better brain meaning better image quality. Plug the pancake lens is prove to be game changer in Quest Pro.

Hey Hugh when I try to export the stabilized clip I get the following message (Cannot be exported because it contains movies with image stabilization.) Any ideas?
@hughhou
@hughhou 7 ай бұрын
Are you on PC or MAC? I have not tested on PC yet. So for clip smaller than 10 second-ish the stabilization does not work. You don't need to wait till the "batch" processing of stabilization to finish on Mac - but maybe in PC, you need to wait till the Stabilization analysis to fully finish first before you can render - as it is different process. Maybe that is?
