On this week's episode of RYGTBKM, a J.D Power study reveals that cars today have more "problems" than in years past; Bentley blames slow sales on today's "emotional sensitivity"; and automakers lose $6k on EVERY EV they sell!

Made an appointment at my Ford dealership this past Friday. Cannot get a Service appointment until June 23, 2024. That is three months out folks. Called around to other Ford Dealerships and found the same time-frame. In asking them why the wait they were honest and said they are overwhelmed with the high number of recalls taking up their time.

A couple of years ago when my water pump went out I found three month waits everywhere. I decided I needed to start working on my own cars because this isn’t going to get any better. I bought tools, and with the help of KZbin videos I have done many repairs like water pump, brakes, front end parts. The only thing I take to a mechanic now is something that requires a lift, something I don’t have the tools for, or something that I can’t or don’t have the equipment to diagnose. In the instance of that water pump, the dealership wanted $1200 to replace it. It was a $136 part and I replaced it in 30 minutes including draining and refilling coolant. It was that repair that solidified my decision that taking my vehicles to a mechanic is no longer a viable option in most cases.

I wish it were that. GM is being sued for their garbage AFM system that's been wreaking havoc for about 15 years. The 3.6 in all variants is temperamental as a newborn. The 10spd auto is as bad as the 6spd. Ford"s Ecoboost is unreliable. Stellantis has never been the greatest. For this to hit in 2019, these problems were pre pandemic. Possibly by as much as 2 years.

New cars are too needlessly complicated. My 1996 Ram 1500 4x4 is still running strong and is reliable. Adding some text for the youngsters posting disrespectful replies. It isn't that us boomers don't know how to repair things. We've been designing and fixing things all our lives. It is the fact that so much needless technology added to vehicles makes them much more expensive to purchase and repair. High replacement parts increases insurance costs as well. Higher prices is also higher property taxes. I like my money staying in my wallet. I am fine with people wanting this bling, but I wish the manufacturers would also build a more basic truck for us people that plan to work the snot out of our truck and don't want all the frills. I have the cash to buy a new truck. I just don't like what's available.

Lemon Lawyer here in California. I have seen a noticeable rise in cases, which is direct correlation with unreliability and consumer dissatisfaction. Biggest culprits are GM, Stellantis, and Ford. But what is most notable is the number of EV‘s and hybrids our clients are driving. They make up over half of our cases. The race to put out the latest technology into keep up with the standards of going all electric by 2035 seem to be the root cause. Love your channel and keep up the great work.

Agree car manufactures put more "stuff" than is actually needed, wanted, or used. The recent trend in full sized trucks (by every maker) is to reduce the cylinders (by two) going from V8 toV6 and V6 to V4 and adding the turbo in order to simply save one or two MPGs? Honestly a very bad decision, and this trend reduces pulling power (torque) and increase the compression on the engines. IF you really look at inventory on the lots (rot) you'll note the ones these dealers can't sell are the V6's w/turbos packaged in the Full sized trucks. Two that really stand out with inventory in my area (V6 turbos) are the Tundra and the F150 trucks. Longtime truck owners (that use a truck as a working tool) simply DON'T want them. Just for 1 or 2 extra MPG - nuts.

Not just chips. A lot of technology has changed in the last three years as we have seen the closure for V-8 engines replaced by turbo's, Twin turbo's, and superchargers in cars and light trucks on smaller displacement engines and this has had an effect on the quality with added complexity for both hardware and software required to operate these systems. Pandemic issues also played a role as well. It is also political in a sense that the fuel mileage mandates are the underlying cause so there are a few issues causing the drop in quality. IMO

You are close. They have been passing on rising costs to buyers for about 100 years without improving the process with an aim to pass the savings on to the user. The want you to buy subscriptions because they know they can't milk you for more when you buy the car. One car maker is bucking this trend. In order to ask the ridiculous prices they have to give the impression that its worth it. For example how much does a 15in touch screen in a model with the software cost them to produce? About 1/10th of what they’re asking people pay for the upgrade. Overloading and over luxurifying them so people pay more for it. Its by design to maximise profit.

@@Jonnymule Some clarification. Net says Massachusetts has banned Subaru Starlink in new cars since the summer of 2021, due to the state's right-to-repair law. Although covered by a right-to-repair-law it is not a right-to-repair issue. "This law requires vehicle tracking services to be disabled by default without customer consent. Subaru and other automakers, like Kia, have been aggressive in resisting the law by turning off vehicle tracking services in Massachusetts." Subaru Starlink and SpaceX Starlink are unrelated.

I'll give you a bit of history regarding my old 1996 Ram 1500 4x4. Still has the original engine and transmission. Early in its life I replaced the plenum gasket and plate on the intake with the aluminum plate kit from Summit racing. Never has blown the plenum gasket since. I have replaced the starter twice. Power steering pump once. Coil pack once. Alternator once. Replaced all the metal brake lines and the brake hoses. In 2015 I replaced the axles, bearings, U-joints. Front wheel bearings and all the front ball joints. Sort of a freshen up of things. Always do all the work myself. Fluids are always changed on schedule, including the brake fluid. Been a very reliable work horse. New dash and headliner in 2019 from LMC. New heater core last winter. That's about it for many years of service. And no truck payments all these years. I don't think a modern truck would be as reliable and easy to repair. Edit...I replaced the air conditioning compressor once several years ago. Bought one new off Ebay. Charged it myself.

I agree that quality control and even design is not up to par and there may be problems down the line. However, I bought a Nissan last year (a brand so many people say nasty things about). I had no problems with it the first 90 days of ownership. As far as I know, I have not had any major problems with it in my first year of ownership. (There may be problems brewing that I don't yet know about.) Snow occasionally got on a sensor and disabled it for part of my drive until it blew off. The malfunction light went on once, but then it was perfectly fine and disappeared. I think I did not have the gas cap tight enough. I now always push it hard until I hear a click. I did lose a small amount of coolant, which I replaced, and I'm keeping my eye on that to make sure that does not signal a larger issue. On the whole, the sensors work well on the car. Recently there was a recall on the driver's side airbag, but when I checked, my car seems not to be involved. I hope Nissan is giving me accurate info on that. Only time will tell if the CVT transmission holds up. I always worry about that.

There are some exotic features I'd be willing to pay extra for. Imagine the luxury of not having a computer screen on the dash, just full dial instruments in a cluster behind the steering wheel. I know it's a stretch, but how about cable heat and cabin airflow controls that didn't depend of software and electronic actuators that simply worked when you needed them to. I could go on and on.

One point about EVs and scaling -- these very are mineral intensive products, with cost of mineral inputs a large proportion of the manufacturing cost. Mineral extraction does not "scale" like manufacturing. If you can mine a million kilograms of cobalt, scaling that to ten million does not cause unit prices to fall, but to rise. I think a lot of people haven't wrapped their heads around how mineral intensive EV batteries are, and they are in for a big surprise when they see costs going up, not down, as volumes increase.

@@garypope6382 the government does not mandate power mirrors, power windows, power locks, keyless entry, power seats, air conditioning, heated seats, radio, infotainment, tinted glass, clear coat, alloy wheels, LED headlights... Do you know how much weight is in all that stuff? Have you seen the sticker price for anything that doesn't come loaded with options? Actually I think Ray nailed it. They make everything so complicated now, with technology key, that almost every part made for cars now has more things that go wrong. Because we have more parts and sensors it's just more possibilities for failure. My job is to make fuel tanks. We have 3 blow mold machines and the two with more robots and more moving parts break down constatly. The one that runs best is the oldest machine with the least moving parts and sensors. I also think companies put production ahead of quallity because manufacturers charge subsidiaries large penalties for not meating their quota. That means factorie that produce parts for manufaturers are pressured into sending subpar products so they aren't billed exsorbinent penalties.

I purchased a 2023 Nissan Altima brand new in October 2022, January 2024 I started having transmission problems, February 2024 I had to have the transmission replaced (took a month for completion due to lack of parts). After a week back in my possession, it's having similar issues, and they are thinking it's either another transmission fault or an auto hold malfunction or the brakes are dragging due to a different issue, they have no idea. However, they don't have any loaner cars available, so when the transmission took a month to get replaced, I had to drive my son's car. Now they still have no loaners and told me to just drive it until they can get a loaner for me... that's been two weeks now... I have heard nothing from Cedar Park Nissan... I guess once I get fully stuck somewhere, and need to be towed, then maybe they will take care of the problem. Less than 11,000 miles.

I traded in a fully loaded SUV on a 2018 Tundra for the lack of tech in the dinosaur truck. I hated things like lane centering because I pay attention to driving and don't like the steering wheel moving against me. I expect long term reliability to go down because of these systems rather than the motor or transmission.
