I wouldn’t rip back for the arm hole. That vest gets ribbing around the arm hole so that should decrease the over all arm hole depth. You can always pick up a few less stitches at the underarm for the ribbing and this will also decrease the arm hole opening. I have to shorten an armhole depth on most garments and find that the arm hole finishing is where I can make some final tweaks. Good luck! Love your videos!

I’m totally with you on hibernating the Florence tank and I reckon one day you’ll want to pick it up. If you do, I would definitely recommend putting stitc markers in between lace repeats which I have found makes is easier to keep track of when you have decreases etc. I am loving how the panel for your clematis vest looks!

Hey Nora, I love how your skirt is knitting up! I appreciate your math skills and diligence making a new plan after the first attempt went awry. I did want to make a suggestion in case you experience a similar problem in the future. I would’ve just tried on the waistband and pinched out the amount I didn’t want, then count the amount of stitches I needed to eliminate on my second attempt. I still would’ve used it as a swatch and re-mathed out my numbers as you did, but I feel like then you could move forward with confidence. Either way, as always I really appreciate the amount of detailed thought that goes into your knits and all the effort you put into editing and producing such an entertaining program every week!

Also, just wanted to commiserate with you on the lace. I’ve been knitting for TWENTY years now, and I just don’t have the brain space currently to knit lace. It doesn’t click naturally with me like colourwork and cables do. That said, I do hope you find a lace pattern that clicks with you naturally and you get to conquer it and have good success.

I was a newbie knitter when I cast on my first lace shawl, I didn't know it was supposed to be hard! I struggled with it because I couldn't read my knitting yet but I found my groove eventually. Due to a felting accident I had to knit it again, oh darn! But it sparked my love for lace. I would always suggest stitch markers every repeat of the lace so you can easily tink back if you realize you've done something wrong. And people swear by lifelines in lace every few rows. I know you'll figure it out, you're much more adventurous than I ever was at your stage of your knitting journey!

Do not feel one bit bad about putting the Florence in hibernation. It happens, and if it is not bringing you joy (let alone making you anxious) that is just antithetical to why we knit! Even if it never comes back to get finished you learned a lot - about knitting and yourself - while making it, so the experience was worth it already. Looking forward to the day we see the finished Sand Cardigan some day in the future. Have a great week! 💜

Nora, I recommend you watch the video by Norman of "Nimble Needles" on Gauge Swatches. His credo is: traditional 4x4 swatches lie. He recommends that you knit a Swatch, count out 15 stitches and measure how far those go and calculate with that number. Since I've watched his videos, I feel justified in approching the gauge swatching business very leisurely (and it has always worked out 😅).

I do think the pinning is why your linen garment changed the way it did with blocking. When wet, the whole garment gets bigger and then it shrinks a bit as it dries. By pinning it in a widthwise way, you're telling the garment "stay big in this dimension, shrink top-to-bottom as you dry". Which is fine as long as you are prepared to pin your finished garment whenever you wash it!

The Sari Nordland vest has caused so much blues karma for now. Making a verbal resolve to set it away lets us all know that we are notalonIe in these types of projects. I brought out an intricate colorwork mitten pattern over 9 years ago, after a very looong nap, I brought it out with new enthusiasm finished them just in time for Christmas gift to a very worthy and wonderful daughter in Love. The accomplishment of the mitts was a true project stash buster monumental moment. It changed my entire thinking on ever doing colorwork mittens for gifts. I gave my DiL her second pair of color work mittens this past Christmas.

I’ve also experienced shrinking after blocking with Line, but the tricky thing is that with wear it stretches out again, so that what begins as a cropped top on me straight off the blocking mat, turns into a full length top after a days wear😅 but then again if I think that is has stretched out too much I just block it and it singes all up again 🫢😅🙈

Hey Nora. 😊 I love all your makes (and Helena!). When you were suggesting picking out the cast on of your black knit, I think that's a fabulous idea. Something I learned last year, is that knitting does not unravel backwards. So, it would be a lot of unpicking even after you picked out the cast on if you're starting from that edge. Of course, you could cut the row above your ideal length and just unpick that, but I wonder how hard it would be to find your stitches when dealing with the shoulders. SO, a million words later, maybe the best idea is to pick of the stitches of your selected row, cut a stitch 2 rows above, unpick to the selected row and then bind off? (Again, love your videos. And feel free to ignore this unsolicited advice. :) )

I do not have a tone of experience with plant fibers, but as I understood and seen in a couple of my knits, they do tend to shrink in the row gauge and grow in the stitch gauge after washing. probably especially linen.

the Vest Claire looks INCREDIBLE!! Congratulations on such a successful FO! I think unpicking the Clematis from the top is an interesting idea because you can use that as a "provisional" for when you start the front/make the collar which might make those connections/seams/whatever extra clean! You know the pattern better than I do, but that is a great thought! Thanks for letting us know about the SG Line. I'm working with the Tynn Line right now and hoping for the same result (grows wider and shorter), and it's good to know that I have to make the body extra long. You are just so insightful and I thank you so much for it!

Everything looks great! If you want your stripes to line up flawlessly, try this easy tip. Knit the first row of the new color. On the first stitch of the second row, pick up the right leg of the stitch in previous color below, and put on the left needle and knit together. That first stitch row will always have 1 fewer rows. This tip comes from Veronica Lindberg’s Stripe Hype sweater.

In my experience Line shrinks when washed but relaxes very quickly with wear. It might be controversial but with yarns like Line I hang my WIP on a hanger for an hour or two so I get a better idea of how it will stretch when worn! If I were in your position with the uncertainty around that panel that’s what I would do anyway.

Regarding your Florence vest. It depends on how much you want a vest. I’d consider modifying the style as follows: Rip back to the start of the armholes then work straight up to the top of your shoulders with only shaping a neckline. Do the back the same and stitch up the shoulder seams. Then you can add some cute little cap sleeves. While it is not a vest, you have a short sleeved cardigan that would serve almost the same purpose as a vest. I think it would be adorable.

I recently started working with lace on the Kutovakika Love letter top. I'm taking my time on it, but one of the things that has helped me was to put circle markers between repeats, that way I don't get confused. Now I know that I have to always have 10 stitches on each repeat and I count them every time. The increases in the pattern so far are outside the repeats. I also look closely at the stitches to make sure I don't miss yos. I hope this makes sense LOL.. maybe it's over zealous but I'm getting so much less frustrated.

I feel the same way about lacework! I love cables and texture and all the things but lacework has been harder for me to get the hang of. I recently finished a shawl for my mom and it had a lacework border. That’s the first time I’ve had a truly successful attempt at lace! I have a couple other projects in my queue that incorporate lace and I hope I can manage them. I had a lace shawl I put in deep hibernation/time out because it was more complicated and I kept messing it up. I think you’ve done a fantastic job with your Florence tank and it being an all over lace pattern. It was such a relief when I took the lace shawl out of rotation. I started enjoying my other projects and things in the queue again since that mental weight of the shawl was gone. I hope you feel the same relief with your break from the Florence tank!

I would not try to unpick the top of the tank to remove a little. It usually ends up being a nightmare because knitting does not want to be unpicked that way. Redoing the armhole increases will be quick! The Florence top will be exciting to get back to next spring after you let it rest! I never tink back if it’s lots of rows. I would take the needle out, rip back to a few rows before the row you want to be on, get a new needle (a size smaller for ease) into the stitches however you can, then tink back the final two rows. Does that make sense? It goes much quicker. Happy knitting!

About the lace vest you want to set aside--I have two suggestions: First, you spoke of making bigger charts to follow; if you haven't really done that yet, maybe do one while it is still in your mind before you hibernate the project; and second, you mentioned what process you wanted to go through; why not write it on a 3x5 card to store with the project. I think you said: going to the other front to set the pattern and decreases correctly then going back to the side that you'd had to frog back. I have had a similar experience with writing. If I simply set something away, it is really hard to pick it up again and takes more time to get it going again; but if I set something aside with notes, processes, ideas I have a smoother re-engagement with the project. Maybe helpful --maybe not. I love watching your casts.

Just an idea regarding the shrinkage of the linen yarn: from sewing I know that linen fabric tends to shrink somewhere between 7-15% during the first wash. Maybe this also applies for yarn?!? You may have done this but one thing that helps with lace knitting is putting a stitch marker between every repeat. So you may end up with a ton of stitch markers on the cable if it’s a small repeat but it’s so easy to see if you missed a yarn over or something.

I can tell how disappointed you are about the Florence vest, but I 100% agree, your knitting should be fun and joyful, if it is sad and painful, time to put that project in time out. I recently did the same with a project that seemed way to convoluted and hard for a supposedly "easy" summer t-shirt. I was reading the directions, I know they were in English, but I couldn't make heads or tails out of what I was supposed to do. And this was a project that I took a class to make!!! Well, I put it in the bottom drawer, will grab the needles and put caps on the cord and go back to it once I've actually finished a project. (Newbie knitter here)

Hi Nora, I have found that the Line shrinks in length when blocked/washed, only to grow again, once you've worn it for the day. That is the nature of the cotton. The thing to think about though is that with a garment like a tank or tee - it won't grow as much simply because there isn't as much weight. Cardigans, on the other hand, seem to keep growing as the day goes on. You're too young to remember the 100% cotton Ralph Lauren sweaters that weighed about 5 lbs and would grow from a sweater to a dress as you wore it 😂 I love this yarn, but it can be a challenge to figure out sizing simply because of trying to anticipate how it will behave once it's a garment. It does wash really well and can easily be shaped when wet - keeping in mind that as you stretch the length, the width will reduce. I think it's better suited for fluid garments that don't depend on a tailored fit to look good.

Sizing will change once the finishes are done. Also with wash and wear. I heard this yarn stretches. A solution to your dilemma would be to do a provional cast on from now on so you can rip out or add on to make any adjustments you need to.
@callingfororpheus
@callingfororpheus 3 ай бұрын
for the linen, lengthwise shrinkage absolutely can happen when blocking! the reason why depends on other factors. Is the section you measured shorter and _wider_ post-block? if so, that's totally normal and is just a matter of the yarn's length shifting and reorienting itself differently. if the piece didn't gain any width, or even lost width, you may have used too warm of water, or it may be caused by friction or spinning if you used a washing machine or spinner (to remove excess water). in my experience knitting with plant fibers, linen and cotton are ABSOLUTELY shrinkage-prone, especially when machine washing, even on cool cycles.

For the Clematis, can't you put in a lifeline and rip out from the cast-on edge? I assume it will have some finishings anyway, so you could put the stitches on hold and then it would just act as a provisional cast on. It could save you from redoing all the armhole shaping. :)

If I'm going to knit that much, I'd rather just start on the garment and rip out if it's not going to fit right. I think it's the weight of the finished garment versus the swatch. Instead I frequently wet block several times over the course of knitting a sweater. That said, your video did encourage me to wet block the hem I just finished for the Pressed Flowers Cardigan as it knit up WAY larger than it should have for the size I'm knitting. Fingers crossed that wet blocking without pinning will shrink up the hem to the desired circumference.

My 2 cents: I have not used sanes garn line but I do believe that when you add the armhole and neckline ribbing you will loose a bit of length bc that will pull/hold the fabric together a bit.

You are so so right!! I have been proceeding with caution and I think this project may set a record for the most mid-project blocks ever! Hahaa

Glad you gave yourself permission to put Florence in time out. Maybe you can take on a simpler lace project before allowing Florence to reappear. I'm doing stash-bust summer with the Sailor Swift top! Thanks for the coupon code!

My experince with that yarn is it shrinks butstretches as you wear it
@iidakaisal

same experience, you want it to be a little bit too short after blocking because it will stretch and loosen while wearing, and then shrinks again after washing

Nora -- when you talk about i-cord, would you clarify how-many-stitch i-cord you're proposing or using? (A 2-stitch hits differently than a 4-stitch)

Haven't finished the video but had to point out quickly that you are going to pick up stitches around the armhole for the clematis vest which always pulls up the bottom of the armhole (every time for me at least). And then you are adding the ribbing and that also makes the opening smaller.

I agree, the arm hole ribbed band will make the arm opening smaller and will then hopefully give you the finished measurements that you need

Sorry if I missed this being added in or if I’m off but with the Clematis vest, aren’t you going to add a ribbing edge to this one? So it will actually be going in more? Since your other vest didn’t have a finished edge? 🤔

It totally is getting a ribbed edge! I think I forgot what a dramatic change that would make…currently bouncing around trying to get a more accurate measurement! Thanks for looking out 🥰💛

I have more or less stopped swatching because my actual projects *NEVER* match my swatches no matter what I do, so it just causes frustration and makes me upset and disappointed. I’ve had enough of that 😅 somehow it hits harder when I’ve swatched and it SHOULD be ok, than if I just start without swatching and am prepared to make changes.

I can’t knit lace without using stitch markers at each pattern repeat. Have you tried doing that?
@akaNoraKnits
@akaNoraKnits 3 ай бұрын
I have!! It was a tricky lace repeat that created a sort of brick lay pattern, so the markers wound up being more fussy than helpful. I do love using them for more steady repeats though!!

Hi, I can't speak for this yarn in particular, but I got some cotton yarn with a substantial amount of Japanese paper in it when I was in Japan, I've knitted a couple of pieces in it and I wash them in the washing machine on the handwash cycle, no problem. 🙂 Edit: I also want to add that I was totally puzzled by the paper in the yarn, so I specifically asked in the shop if it can be washed (they made the yarn themselves) and they said yes.

I know you’re over the Florence tank, but as a solution for when you revisit it: make the last K2tog or ssk of a lace row into a k3tog or sssk…that way you will stay in pattern but decrease 1 stitch per row 🥰🧶
