New Clutch and Oil Screen Clean On The 2004 Honda Rebel CMX250C | The Fixit Shed

The Rebel has almost 14,000 miles, and I do not know if the oil screen has been cleaned. also, the previous owner complained the clutch was slipping, so I am going to change the oil, clean the oil screen, replace the clutch and empty the "puke" tube.

Very well done. Video clearly shows every step in detail. I've heard that motor oils for cars that have the "Energy Conserving" sticker have "friction modifiers" that can cause wet clutches to slip. In that case, a sipping clutch can be fixed simply by changing the oil. My 2004 Rebel probably doesn't have anything but a metal filing or two on the oil screen. Given how difficult it is to get to, I'd try Rislone oil treatment to dissolve the muck before breaking open the case. I've used it in the past with old, gunked up engines and it did a good job. Good to know that if I ever have to physically clean it I'd need to go ahead and buy a replacement and not try to save the OEM... Edit: Have added diesel to the oil and run for a few minutes and that seemed to work just as well...

Thanks! There were a few more "head in the way" moments than I would have liked, but it wasn't too bad. It definately could have been the oil the previous owners used, but I wanted to open the case to clean the screen anyway, and the new clutch parts were only $21 on amazon. So I didn't see the point in not doing it. It is one thing if I am going to be using the bike, and I can fiddle with it here and there, but I want to get it up for sale and have confidence that it is in the best condition possible for the new owner.

Thank you for this! my crankcase is leaking on the right side, does that mean I just need to replace the gasket? Or could there be something else wrong as well?

I would start with a torque wrench and make sure all the bolts on the case are tightened appropiately. If so then replace the gasket. if the gasket has been replaced before, it is possible that they did not clean off all of the old gasket materieal sufficiently. While you are changing it check for any damage around the edges or warping. (set the cover down on a flat surface and make sure the edges are flat against the surface)

They start leaking on the right side at about 25000miles ...tiny amount...wipe away film.... It will also leak later at a top end bolt on the right side. Retorque every 5000 miles or so. Do not overtorque (the spec is in the book or online). After 60k you just sorta live with it till you need clutches. At that point you have gone well past the mfg expected life of the bike....so it is all gravy after that. If oil ever comes out of the left side weep hole, the oil seals are leaking. Thats a left side teardown for two $2 parts but $45 in gaskets.

It came with the bike, and I don't have that Rebel anymore, so I don't have it to show. There is someone selling back rests on ebay. Just seach on "Honda Rebel 250 Drivers Backrest"

I may have missed it in the video but doesn’t the bike have to be in a certain gear so the clutch plates don’t spin freely when you remove the “flower” nut with the special 24mm tool? I replaced mine two years ago and was freshing up my memory with your video, couldn’t find the original I followed along with two years ago.

There is a lot of discussion about this. I left mine in neutral and used the impact wrench so that there was no stress on the transmission. If I tried to use a regular wrench with the bike in gear it would move, obviously. Some have said that they tried holding the rear brake while turning the nut with the bike in gear and broke their transmission. Others have use a screwdriver to jam the gears, but that is not recommened. There is a tool (EBC CT Series Clutch Removal Tool for Honda REBEL 1999-2014) to hold it still while turning the nut, but it is about $50. I would either spend the money on the tool or use an impact, like I did. Don't damage the transmission. Check out the HondaRebelForum. Lots of good info and experience there.

The big nut in the middle that you need a special tool for, is 24mm (link in video description if you need it). The 4 bolts around it are 10mm.

Yeah, that is a good question. That would work. If you remove the valve cover and crank the engine, you should see oil coming out. I am not sure how you would measure the pressure to make sure it is enough oil. The 450 Rebels have an oil pressure light, but the 250s do not. You might want to post your question to the hondarebelforum.com. There might be someone there more familiar with this.
