Thank you, I'm pleased you enjoyed it. I travelled the route again in 2019 to see how the earthquake had changed the coastline, having made arrangements to film the route from the cab, it was defeated on the day by an anonymous health and safety official to the disappointment of both myself and the KiwiRail staff who had made the arrangements. It would have been a unique opportunity to compare the two cab rides side by side to show the tremendous amount of work done to re-open the line. I did publish a video of my 2019 visit - kzbin.info/www/bejne/d37YnJedbbOIZ68

We visited New Zealand in May 2013 and loved every moment of it. It's a great country with great people,but I digress ... Shortly before or trip to NZcommenced Kiwi rail announced the suspension of the Coastal Pacific for the winter. It ceased operations about two days before our previously planned Blenheim - Christchurch journey so we missed all of the spectacular scenery along the route. Thanks for these splendid videos, Tim.

Hi Neil, it's really nice to know you enjoyed them. The line is still not open over it's full length yet due to damage done by a massive earthquake last year. The train this was taken from has not been able to run this season, hopefully the line will be restored for next summer season. Hopefully I will visit again when it is up and running. I was unlucky to catch wet weather, as this coast of New Zealand is usually dry and sunny.

Hi, Tim! Christchurch bore the brunt of not one but two powerful quakes, the first in 2011 and the second sometime last year(2016) so there's still quite a bit to be done to aid that city's recovery. Not for nothing is New Zealand known as the "Shaky Isles", the nation as a whole, is prone to quakes. Of course, closer to home, I used to live at Stockton, a suburb of Newcastle NSW. You may remember this because it made the news in Britain and America of the 5.5 richter quake that wrecked Newcastle on 28th December, 1989. Local TV station NBN had a field reporter covering a bus union strike, the reporter was interviewing a union delegate when the quake struck a little after 10.00 am local daylight savings time. It was a shocker. I saw the aftermath of it when the train I was on was coming back from Wauchope came in to Hamilton station. I heard about it because those waiting for the train at Wauchope station were all talking about it.
@Timsvideochannel17 жыл бұрын
Hi Neil, this is a link to a video I made that includes shots of Christchurch before and after the quake - kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJ6bkp1teZukf7M It was heart breaking to see the city after the quake. The rebuild is proving a slow process as those that make the decisions have to determined what to rebuild, bearing in mind the new city centre may have less shops and offices and the church is not willing to rebuild the iconic cathedral. In many ways Christchurch was the centre of South Island tourism and for this reason alone it is desirable to get the place looking good as soon as possible. Some areas are so unstable they cannot be built on, hopefully they will become parks and gardens. Having personally seen the aftermath of a quake you are likely aware of the devastation, even buildings that look OK are often wrecked inside to a point where demolition has to be considered. I wish the people of Christchurch well and look forward to visiting again.
@neilforbes4167 жыл бұрын
Hi, Tim! I'll take a look at your video through the link in a moment but first I want to ask if you saw the recent Tony Robinson series where he did history walks through various Australian and NZ cities? He did an episode on Christchurch which would've been completed before the second earthquake in 2016 wreaked further damage on the city. He also visited Newcastle NSW in the first half-dozen episodes too.
@Timsvideochannel17 жыл бұрын
Hi Neil, I don't watch much television. I have not seen the series you mention, but I will look out for it as I like Tony Robinson, I have seen him in a series where he visits archaeological digging sites to discover how our ancestors lived.

Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it. The railway is certainly capable of handling more trains. When I camped at Blenheim, there appeared to be more trains in the early morning and late evening, although at the moment there are is a limited number of freight trains running at night, as the line is still being repaired during daylight hours after the earthquake that caused severe damage to both the road and railway line..

Hi David, KiwiRail have just posted a video to let the world know the Tranzalpine is back is action after fires destroyed some of the wooden bridges along the line. It will be a little longer before the Coastal Pacific is running again, due to earthquake damage to the track, but it was a relief all round that the extensive damage was not used as an excuse to close the line. Hopefully it will be back in action for the 2018 season.

There are not many railway lines left in New Zealand, but those that survive pass through some outstanding scenery. KiwiRail invested in a new fleet of carriages for their scenic trains, they are very comfortable, with large panoramic windows. For more information about them click on this link - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Zealand_AK_class_carriage

As always , I have enjoyed your videos. I admit to not being sure about the interruptions from the open car. Sort of discombobulating when I am happily focused on the driver's view. but you can't satisfy everyone and I do think you do great work. Your Shimla work is still amongst your best, though.

Hi Hammers, good to hear from you. I would have posted a complete drivers eye view at normal speed but unfortunately the camera suffers from a jelly effect as the loco accelerates and slows down due to the increased vibration from the engine. I take the good video and put it together in the best way I can. I have posted a complete high speed version as this hides most of the jelly effect. Thanks for commenting......Tim.
@dareeyhal10 жыл бұрын
I enjoy the open car because you get good views, the sound of the train on the rails, and the sounds of the engine. A great combination. I used to travel all around NZ back in the 70s and 80s on the railcars and was lucky to be able to sit up front with the drivers. Unfortunately I cant seem to find any videos of these railcars apart from small snippets. Thanks to you Tim and others, I have been able to travel all round the world on trains from the comfort of my home.

Dang, Tim, why didn't you show the meet(ing of trains) at Claverly?
@Timsvideochannel19 жыл бұрын
ChamplainDivision Hi, although the train stopped at Claverly we did not pass another train, there were just some trucks parked in a siding. I believe the driver stopped to obtain permission from control to proceed, which may also explain the yellow signal approaching the loop.

Okay, why is a yellow/approach signal given at the beginning of a passing loop/siding and then a green/proceed/clear signal given at the end when the train is obviously highballing through the whole thing? Also, I've noticed the driver/engineer is very selective about blowing his horn for grade crossings. Some he does; some he doesn't. I am aware that there is a "just one toot" rule in Australia, so I'm assuming the same applies in New Zealand.
@Timsvideochannel19 жыл бұрын
ChamplainDivision Hi, I don't know the answer to the passing loop signals, but I did notice the the driver only sounded the horn when approaching ungated level crossings.

I wonder what the death rate is for cars and trucks at those unprotected crossings, where the engineer only toots a short little note about 2 seconds before he hits the crossings? Maybe the reason we saw so few people is that they've all been killed at railroad crossings?

Or as a KiwiRail train. :) After all, he was already almost half mechanical. ;) And you can really see how badly the salt air is corroding those rails. The rust is far more evident in the earlier shots when the train is near the sea than later when it's further inland.
@Timsvideochannel16 жыл бұрын
It's not surprising the rails are rusty, there is often a fine mist drifting inland on the wind caused by the waves crashing onto the coastline. At times the train runs so near to the sea, the waves feel almost close enough to touch.

Hi, later videos are full length. When this video was taken GoPro cameras couldn't cope with the vibration when the diesel loco was working hard, so most of the footage shown was shot when the train was coasting. Hinducowgirls videos are very good, she is lucky to be driving smooth running modern electric trains as opposed to rough riding diesels from the 60's and 70's. Today's GoPro's are much improved, they can cope with vibration
