Hi, New Zealand has a tiny population in relation to its size, resulting in vast areas being almost untouched by man, no walls or buildings, just as it would have looked had it not been discovered by man. The desolate isolation is wonderful, one of the few places where one can sit and hear nothing, but nature.

Some very nice camera & editing work done on this video. I especially liked the views from the carriages of the rivers & meadows, a nice change from the usual front cab view. I also appreciate that there was no music, just the natural sounds of the train & rails.

Hi Sheila, I appreciate your comment, I tried to give an all round view of this ride because there were amazing vistas in every direction. Sometimes I have to use music for various reasons ranging from the camera picking up inappropriate conversations, wind noise and sometimes there are annoying rattles that just seen to drown out the ambient sounds. On this trip the sound track was reasonably good and I love to hear the loco working hard.

It is worth making your way to the open air carriage shortly after Springfield to make sure you don't miss the dramatic entrance to the Waimakariri Gorge. You will need to wear something warm for the open air carriage and don't forget your camera.

@@Timsvideochannel1 The Loop is one of the most amazing places in the US to watch "heavy duty" railroading. During part of my professional life I traveled to China Lake Naval Weapons Center, in Ridgecrest, California, once or twice (sometimes more) every year. On at least a half dozen of these business trips I was able to schedule a day of personal leave to visit the Loop (either on my way to China Lake or on the way back to whatever LA area airport I was flying out of). It's less than an hour drive from Ridgecrest. And I would also chase trains between Mojave and Caliente. It left such an impression on me that my layout in large part is based on the physical geography of the region. You can check out my ongoing efforts here kzbin.info/door/HPGX0MYVd6KzSWUclJ4Kfw. Anyway, now that I'm retired and living in northern Virginia I probably should go ahead and cross Tehachapi Loop off my "bucket list." 😉

John Heymans Thank-you for your kind comment. One the things I love about New Zealand is that most of the more mountainous landscape would probably look the same had man never set foot there, no walls, buildings, power lines, cultivated fields etc. As you get closer to sea level, man has removed much of the forest to cultivate the land, but many of the valleys still retain a raw natural beauty and in places along the West Coast glaciers are still carving their way through the rugged landscape.

+Timsvideochannel1 - Let's hope they are never 'discovered' by 'modern' tourism. But I heard New Zealand government wants to improve tourism!?
@Timsvideochannel19 жыл бұрын
+pega17pl While many of the people I meet in New Zealand are tourists, often in hired camper vans or staying in backpacker accommodation, it is still possible to drive for half an hour without seeing another vehicle. The Christchurch earthquakes hit tourism and the cost of getting to New Zealand is a natural limit the number of visitors. It is desirable for an increase in visitors to sustain peoples livelihoods, but I think South Island is safe from the ravages of modern tourism and travelling by train is a great way to see the country without damaging the wonderful environment.

I have been on the TranzAlpine twice - September 2005 (overcast and rainy) and December 2015 (summer and fine) and agree that your video provides an excellent illustration of the journey that you have titled. The only missing item (if there is one) is the actual blueness of the Waimakarrii river as you go through the gorge - there are brief patches of it shown but I wish that more was present. Enjoyed the titling as well which helps to give an idea of where you are on the actual journey. Anyway, a nice job. Incidently, the length (time taken) for the journey is often governed by the weather and heat - in our December 2015 journey the train had to slow in some areas because excessive heat may have caused buckling of the tracks (yes, I know, we're not in Australia but the problem of heat does exist and care was taken in a couple of sections). Fortunately there were no problems and the train journey was incident free.

Hello Mark, I no longer release videos on DVD, there is an alternative if your TV is modern and fitted with a USB port. Videos can be downloaded from KZbin, just ask a youngster they'll tell you how to do it, otherwise I can copy the original videos onto a memory stick, to play back through the TV, This system works better than a DVD because the picture is higher quality and memory sticks don't wear out. You can contact me via Email using the link accessed with the "about" button on my Timsvideochannel1 home page. Cheers. Tim.

What is with the high (sometimes only on one side) fences on the viaducts? They don't seem to allow room for a person to get away from a train.

When planning your New Zealand adventure, remember that KiwiRail has a habit of stranding passengers at freight train terminals without food, water, information, and does not provide reimbursement for cancelled trains / bus substitutions. Their customer service will simply remind you that they are not covered by US or European passenger rights laws and quote their terms and conditions, "Under our terms and conditions section 6.7c delays, deviations and changes to carrier services in our terms and conditions under which you purchased your ticket, (c) may at any time without notice, abandon, cancel or alter any carrier service, substitute a carrier or mode of transport, commence a carrier service before or after the scheduled date or time of departure, deviate from a route for any purpose and subject to 2.3, and except as otherwise provided in these conditions, the carrier is not liable to the passenger or sender for any direct or indirect damage, cost, expense or consequential loss suffered as a direct or indirect result of any of the foregoing."
@Timsvideochannel110 жыл бұрын
I've been lucky, as I have traveled many times using Kiwi Rail and never experienced a problem. I am aware that the harsh terrain, lack of diversionary routes and only a small pool of spare rolling stock does expose Kiwi Rail to a greater chance of disruption. I am guessing you have had a bad experience, which is unfortunate as great expectation can quickly become a huge disappointment, if the train you are on is going nowhere, with alternative transport many hours away. I live in the UK and experience has taught me that the longer the journey the more likely I am to experience a problem and the compensation rules make little difference if your day has been ruined ....
