Hi Andrew... you will be happy to hear this... So I have gone to many manufacturers and asked them to submit their most capable survival folders for review... So we are going to be doing a series on the best folders for survival in 2013. Later. ~ David

Great review! Since I never carry just one knife and virtually always have both a multi-tool & a 'tactical folder' on me I tend to gravitate to fixed blade survival knives with larger 6"-8" blades rather than the smaller 4"-4.5" blades that are so popular for bushcraft. I just find that longer blades work just as well as short blades for most tasks & much better for things like chopping. The Cold Steel SRK looks like it would fit into my collection quite well!

Thanks for the question. It's a bit general, and both make some good and some GREAT gear. Gerber is the largest knife company in the world so they must be doing something right. Because people buy stuff. And if that stuff isn't any good, then they stop buy that stuff... All that to say... both companies have some great stuff and some not so great stuff. I don't think SOG does any of their own manufacturing... I think it's all outsourced. Gerber still makes their premium gear in Portland USA...

Is there a video of you reviewing the Gerber Prodigy or have you not had a chance to review it yet? ...I think I just about seen all your videos and I'm happy to say all your gear and knife reviews have helped me narrowed down my ideas of I would want to have with me at all times for any outdoor adventures with complete confidence in my equipment. Great job and keep em' coming.

What I don't like about this channel is the cheesy intro and that he doesn't really use it for a while and give us his opinion. I like hearing people talk about what they like or don't like, how it's held up over time and continuous heavy use. That's what I like about Nutnfancy and The Late Boy Scout, they don't care what the company or anybody says about their opinions, they just give it to us straight.

I can agree with that. He seems to just line them up and advertise them. He does a lot of advertising for Bear Grylls products ( personally I would be embarrassed to carry any product with a huge orange BG on the front) I like those reviews that show the pros and cons as well.

Hi David, I took my chances looking at your prodigy video. Being that it was an old video, I didn't think it was bad. In fact seeing the comparison in size between the LMF 2 and the prodigy made me remember of an important thing you once said on one of your other videos, " a great survival knife is that knife you'll most likely have on you when needed in an emergency. "

I agree, you need to hammer with it. This is close to perfect. To perfect it have a Bear Grylls hammer style bottom on the handle, a bit of grip for the thumb on top for fine working, and a slightly inwardly rounded choil for the index finger doing fine work too. The handles grippy rubber is great. I have never seen one that does all this, but plus the modifications I mentioned to perfect it. Know one???

The SRK also comes in the SAN MAI III version, said to be better. I notice that there is no coating on it. Does that mean it doesn't need to be clean or would the elements still cause the blade to rust?

David,I had reviewed many water filtrations of all kinds to use out on the field, after countless hrs & late nights I decided on the sawyer water filter, its a lifetime guaranteed & a 1million gallon use,i got the one that I can use a bucket for more ppl in my group or if I just want to take it in my pack I can use the water bag it comes with, ived heard to many ppl say the hand pump from other filters break & you really have to baby them while using or carrying in bag, this is lighter, easy to use.

so I am looking for a survival knife for light bushcraft and camping. I am looking for something that can take some abuse, hold an edge, sharpen fairly easy, and use for batoning. From my research, I found that 4-6 inches is what Im looking for. Not quite sure if stainless steel would be fitting or if HC Would be better. I have considered this blade, as well as the Berber strong arm, bear gryls ultimate pro, and esee 3 among others. Can I go wrong with any of these blades?

I have one of these made from the older carbon V steel, and it is the most rugged knife I have owned. Keeps and edge and is easy to sharpen. I'm not crazy about CS newer products since they are mostly made overseas. It would be nice to see a review on the older carbon V SRK vs the newer one.

Speaking of the coating, I gave my son and SRK when he was a cadet as West Point. They would not let him use it so he put it in his clothing drawer with his socks and such. It sat there for a couple of years and rusted in a heated room in a drawer with warm cloths. I'll take the "Shrade Extreme" for a production knife and a Habilis for a bushcraft knife.

Thats a hard choice they are both so good but I agree . The SRK is also Issued to all Navy Seals when they are in Buds training and has a excellent battlefield record . I have heard stories of soldiers that there CO s only allowed them to carry this knife even over Kabar and SOG Seal series. I wish the SRK had the hard Tini finish of SOG and the Pommel end of the force . great review again !

One of my first serious mid-size survival knife, is the S.R.K., mine is in the CarbonV, great knife, I'm also a 3knife carry guy, so I buy my knives in set's, when Camillus went belly up, Cold Steel stopped making the CarbonV, what a shame, because I got a Cold Steel set in San Mai, the Mini Pendleton in VG-1, Master Hunter, S.R.K., Recon Tanto, and my pre 1980's Trailmadter, are all in San Mai, the Kukuri Plus is in 0-1, my new S.R.K. is no where near as good as the CatbonV, the tip is paper thin, and is a Hollow Grind, yet my Becker BK-s are in 1095 CroVan, which is the same steel as the CarbonV, or also known as the 0170-6C, what a shame Cold Steel dropped their CatbonV, but are finally making them is other great steel's, eg.like 0-1, 3V, but not all styles, I compare my CarbonV, S.R.K. to my Benchmaid #152, in D-2, and it's no longer made. I still like my S.R.K, because it's a straight edge where my #152 is partially serrated. I really enjoy your video' s Mike, keep up the great work.

It seems your primary focus is knives upwards of 50-100$ which is a good everymans sort of budget but out of curiousity would you try a review of the cold steel gi tanto its roughly 25$. And I'm wondering what you think of it since your reviews are well thought out and put together.

Like I have mentioned before I have the Cold Steel S.R.K in CarbonV and in the San Mai 3, I was very disappointed in my San Mai version because the tip is paper thin and of you use it like my older S.R.K in CarbonV it won't hold up as well, infact if you use it other than a knife and don't do what their video suggested the older S.R.K did your going to have a broken knife, but Cold Steel also is using the 0-1 Tool Steel on some of their knives like the Trailmaster and the Recon Scout, I wish they would use the 0-1 in the S.R.K. too, I like my C.S., S.R.K. but I was able to find a X-Ray between the S.R.K. and the Fallkniven A-1 what a difference, and I'm just not taking about the San Mai 3 and the Laminated VG-10 Steel Fallkniven uses, I'm talking about the full tang design Fallkniven is a much stronger full tang.the 6" blade is one of my favorite size knives, I have the C.S., S.R.K. The Fallkniven A-1, my Benchmade #156 in D-2 it's serrated, my Bravo 1.5 in 3V, my Bokor Vox Black Rold my Bokor Vox 2011 Collection one heck of a beautiful knife in the 440C staimless, and my new Swamp Rat Rodent 6 which I had thinned down and the top gaurd taken off and now it look's like a beefy Ratmandu and right away as soon as I put it in my hand it became my favorite right away even though I have a few 6" blade knives, and I have two C.S., S.R.K. 's I would buy another one if it was made in the 0-1 Tool Steel, I do enjoy my vintage S.R.K. and I sometimes use my San Mai 3 version also but only on family picnics and more gingerly it is a sharp knife, it should be it's got a hollow grind may it's a modified hollow grind or a modified saber grind but it looks more like a hollow grind, anyhow I wish you would suggest Cold Steel to make it in 0-1 and tell them you know who would buy one in 0-1, Thanx for a great video, good job keep up the great work as usual.
