He realised there's no shade in some days in Alexandria, so based on a very well measured distance between Alexandria and another city where there was shade at 1 degree. He took that distance and multiplied it by 360 and he got 40 000 km, which is 500 km short. Quite a good job.

Christopher Columbus tried to convince the Portuguese to back his trip west. The Portuguese had two reasons not to do this. 1) They were invested in going east, by going around africa to get to india and 2) They knew that the trip west would be too far and that no ship could carry enough fresh water to survive the journey. For whatever reason, Columbus was convinced that the earth was smaller than all the measurements showed that it was, he thought he could cross the western ocean and survive. Queen Isabella decided to back him and he went west.... he got very lucky, and landed in a place that the europeans had no idea was there.

@@admontblanc Wait, did people know about Americas before Colombus arrived??
@GratefulFloydian5 ай бұрын
The Vikings reached North America in 1001 ad, they settled "Markland" in New Foundland and "Vinland" somewhere South in what is today New England. The first Europeans on North American soil were Scandanavian and knew about lands to the West since 1001 ad with the testimony of Thorvgald and his men... Besides all of that, there were already people here. So "finding" land (hence, the "New World") is more of a euphemism for the idea of America, not a literal discovery. Creating a dualist approach that "savages" vs. "civilized" folk constitutes a "discovery" is an archaic belief in cultural anthropology and is not accepted as having factual basis. The indigenous people of the Americas had vast societies with complex technology, religion, and systems of government. There is one race, the human race, and any logistical seperation in human history based on cultural differences is asinine to the idea of our place in the Universe.

Columbus also thought that the circumference of the Earth was significantly smaller than it is and many others had calculated. Given how difficult it is to just cross the Pacific with the technology of the time unless you already know the currents, weather patterns and position of suitable islands this was deemed an impossible distance to cross. IIRC they tried to find suitable islands to extend their reach but those are quite rare in the mid Atlantic. Also trade companies give bonus to goods produce in non-trade company provinces in the same node. The amount of goods produced is based on trade influence of the company and institutions accepted (20% per each institution in 100% trade influence of the trade company). So the best option if you have the entire region is to put 1-3 states in trade company possession and max trade influence in these very regions up to 50% of the node. That gives you from 10 to 70% goods produced in region adn 1 merchant. That strat is so effective that some country like ottos can make 500 incame in 1500 by using that feature.

I actually think Great Britain is the best colonising power, as with the stronger economy early on you can have (num colonists+2) colonies going at any time without breaking the bank. While also annexing the natives and subsidising the colonies
@admontblanc7 ай бұрын
If you want to min-max it the Portuguese mission tree is optimized so that you can make bank from going far East and trade in spices. With that money you can outcompete everyone in the colonial game anyway, and the fact still remains that they're the only nation with a jump start on exploration without exploration ideas so you can go directly into expansion ideas. By the time anyone else is ready to explore and colonize you have a good 50-80 years advance as Portugal. So Britain is only superior from the mid-game onwards, which means you're gonna have to make war on other European powers for colonial supremacy.

I love playing Portugal with their colonial path but i always struggle with man power an most importantly army limiti, trade company are excellent gor money but not for force limiti, that's why America's colonies are very important for portugal, anyway Portugal from an historical poin of view was much more focused on their African colonies and the east indies in general
@admontblanc7 ай бұрын
Not entirely true. The East was initially more important because of the trade, but after the dual monarchy period under the Habsburgs, with Portugal losing dominance in the East to the Dutch, Brazil became their main colonial focus. African colonies were just trade and seaports from which their expeditions and trade fleets could be launched and supplied for all those long voyages, Portugal only started to invest in actual colonial development in Africa after losing Brazil. So their focus was always entirely pragmatic and adjusted towards their needs. Trade with the East made them filthy rich, then Brazil gave them a second surge after becoming 2nd rate in the East, and finally Africa became a lifeline after losing everything else.

One infantry can handle the natives in any province the new world, in my experience. the only exception would be the natives in the ivory coast node - but usually i colonize those places once I have unlocked the explo / expansion policy + given the native assimilation privilege to the clergy so they don't cause any problems.

I'd like to explain a little missconception from Ludi. In the Treaty of Trodesillas the Pope gave the rights of colonization and evangelization of present-day America (North and South) to Spain, who were the ones who really encountered America on their way to Asia heading west. Portugal was assigned the western part demarcated by approximately the Greenwich meridian. That's why the portuguese actually focused on skirting Africa until they found a passage to the Indian Ocean (Cape of Good Hope), which they achieved before the spanish discovered America, thus solving the shortage of Asian goods. The Spaniards, for their part, would discover new goods (tobacco, chocolate, potatoes, tomatoes) and the largest reserves of gold and silver in the world. Thanks for reading.

i still prefer kilwa for colonization, tons of gold with less inflation due to mission estate (mutua,kilwa,sophia,butua, massapa, kaffa, damot, and in west africa after you got colonizer there and then another 2 in Borneo and Sumatra) early access to spice islands from missions, lets not forget them cloves 1000 income before 1600 😂
