The use of so-called “turtle tanks” on the front lines in Ukraine appears to be becoming the new norm. Just three weeks after the first discovery of a Russian T-72 tank with an additional protective hull attached to it, Russian troops are now using the modified vehicles in groups. This is evidenced by a clip that is currently circulating on social networks.
Russian military blogger Boris Rozhin published a video on Telegram with drone columns of “turtle tanks”. According to him, the recording was made last Saturday and shows an attack on the small town of Krasnogorovka in the DPR. The footage shows four “turtle tanks,” believed to be upgraded infantry fighting vehicles, and a main battle tank driving into the city area under Ukrainian artillery fire. In the end, it appears that only one of the vehicles made it back to Russian positions. According to a military blogger, the attack was aimed at transporting paratroopers into the city.
The first “turtle tank” was spotted near Krasnogorovka in early April. Just a week later, a Ukrainian drone spotted another example of the improved design in the area. Instead of a flat protective panel, the second “turtle tank” had a taller design, apparently to protect the infantrymen. The design has proven itself. According to the pro-Ukrainian blog Defense Express, during its baptism of fire, the prototype unloaded Russian attack aircraft near Ukrainian positions and then drove back again.
The experience gained by the Russian Armed Forces with the “turtle tank” now seems to be affecting tactics. Instead of simply placing one of the vehicles at the head of an attacking column, several “turtle tanks” are used at once.
The Ukrainian armed forces are having trouble defending themselves against these “monsters,” as they call them, due to a shortage of artillery shells, mines and anti-tank weapons.
"Everyone laughs at the design of their armor, but they actually work damn well" - wrote the pro-Ukrainian military blog “Life on the Front Line” about a video that allegedly shows the attack of a “turtle tank” on the city of Chasov Yar. According to the Telegram channel, it took “a lot” of FPV to repel the attack drones.

The tank crew loses situational awareness. They’re mostly blind. Can’t rotate the turret to engage targets. Heat buildup? The metal sheeting isn’t armor. So just takes more drones. Yes, drones are dropping mines in front of the nearly blind tank. WW2 folks knew you can’t employ tanks by themselves . Seems silly.

It works for protect the crew, but it doesn't mean it can't be stoped or disabled, instead all the abrams crew from disabled m-1's on the battlefield survived without a big steel cage welded on the top that blinds the crew, and second, the abrams sent to ukraine is the old and export version, it has no chobam armor, and no reactive armour on top, it could be good and safe as the T-90 on the battlefield without turrets flying in the air

The most efficient counter for a turtle tank, which Russia uses in this war, would likely be guided anti-tank missiles such as the Kornet or the FGM-148 Javelin. Additionally, air power in the form of attack helicopters or fighter jets could also be used to effectively neutralize turtle tanks on the battlefield.

Russia. Second greatest army in the World. Now designing their tanks based on Leonardo da Vinci's "Turtle Tank" design from 1487. What next? Trebochet's? Ballista's? Let me guess. They're going to issue their "meat" large shields, so they can advance en-masse, using the Roman "Tortoise" formation? Russia, heading backwards in time, while the rest of the World moves forwards.

Some of the key natural resources (elements) that may be required for the production of anti-tank missiles and launchers include: Steel: Used for the construction of the missile body and launcher components. Aluminum: Commonly used for lightweight components such as guidance systems and fins. Copper: Essential for the production of electrical wiring and connections in guidance systems. Titanium: Used for parts that require high strength and heat resistance, such as the warhead casing. Tungsten: Used for the production of armor-piercing warheads for anti-tank missiles. Lithium: Essential for powering the guidance systems and electronics in the missile. Rare earth elements: Used in the production of specialized components such as magnets and sensors in the missile's guidance system. Explosive materials: Such as nitrocellulose and RDX, commonly used in the warhead of anti-tank missiles. Petroleum products: Essential for the production of fuels for the propulsion systems of the missiles. Silicon: Used in the production of electronic components and semiconductors for the guidance and targeting systems.

It is important for Ukraine to focus on acquiring defensive weapons such as anti-tank missiles, air defense systems, and artillery to deter potential aggression and protect its territory. Additionally, investing in cyber defense capabilities to address hybrid warfare threats should also be a priority. Ultimately, the specific weapon systems to focus on will depend on Ukraine's strategic priorities and assessment of threats. In a conflict situation, it is important to focus on areas of military production that are crucial for the success of the operation. Some key areas to focus on include: 1. Weapons and ammunition production: Ensuring a steady supply of weapons and ammunition is essential for carrying out military operations effectively. 2. Vehicle and equipment production: Maintaining and upgrading military vehicles and equipment is crucial for mobility and operational success. 3. Communication and intelligence technology production: Developing advanced communication and intelligence technology is vital for gathering information and coordinating military operations. 4. Medical supplies and equipment production: Ensuring a sufficient supply of medical supplies and equipment is critical for treating injured personnel and maintaining the health and well-being of the military force. 5. Cybersecurity and electronic warfare production: Developing and enhancing cybersecurity and electronic warfare capabilities is essential for protecting military communications and disrupting enemy operations. Ultimately, the focus of military production will depend on the specific needs and objectives of the conflict situation. Prioritizing these key areas can help ensure the success of military operations and the safety of personnel involved.

The USA had to come up with a special "urban survival kit" when it was feared that RPG-carrying troops could simply hit the tank's roof like a Javelin missile and disable it that way. War breeds innovation, and though the field-rigged prototypes look ghastly, time and experience will improve and standardise such designs. They might even have a designation, for instance, "drone survival kit."

That might be all it takes, like reactive armour which simply blows away a shaped charge. You're trying to reduce exposure to a new threat, not do the impossible and make some sort of impenetrable tank, 150 tons, sinking in mud, using incredible amounts of fuel etc.

@@jamesgornall5731 WOT tank in this world weights 150 ton? 🤔🤣
@jamesgornall5731
@jamesgornall5731 4 ай бұрын
@@stephenwalsh1332triumph I'm saying, if you want to make a tank invulnerable to regular battlefield munitions it'll be over 150 tons in weight by the end of the process, and such a beast would attract bigger munitions like cruise missiles to stop it. All you can do is produce a tank which will carry out the assigned task while remaining light enough to be usable in the local terrain. T-series medium tanks are not like a heavy Abrams, or Challenger, or Leopard, they are intentionally smaller so they can cross local bridges, not get stuck in mud so easily and remain in use all year round, being reasonably simple to tow out of any stuck condition and also light enough to be easily shipped back for repair, refurbishment, etc. The USA built the Abrams in the 1980s in order to have a tank which could fight all over the world to conduct offensive operations where local repair etc might not be available immediately and so needed to be heavily armoured to shrug off smaller AT weapons like the ubiquitous, venerable RPG-7. They also needed to be available to HOLD against a Soviet offensive against West Berlin/West Germany until NATO (USA) forces could arrive to, perhaps, drive back the Soviets. Just different design philosophies is all; Soviet planners knew they would likely be facing an opponent which it would quickly have to overwhelm and overrun before suing for an armistice before the conflict turned nuclear. Smaller, lighter tanks followed a philosophy the Germans had been working with during the Leopard 1 era, that armour is pointless when any HEAT round can penetrate, which is why the Leopard 1 has a big gun and virtually no armour. This was before the age of Composites, reactive armour, APS etc (I think the Soviets were first with all these systems, the naval-carried version of the T-55 had the furst active protection system, the T-64 was first to be mass produced with composite armour and reactive armour...my mistake, this was first used by Israel, but widely adopted by the Soviet Union soon afterwards). If NATO sent 2000 tanks, you'd simply see 2000 dead NATO tanks. All weapons of war can be countered, except strategic nuclear missiles, which assures peace between world powers.

These russian bots in chat making weird arguments saying "How come Russia not run out of ammo? artillery, Tanks and rockets yet like the media said" Most of the media I use to watch and some credible military analysts said that 'If Russia keeps up its rate of fire from artillery and rockets' they might run out' and this was before the Ukraine Kharkiv offensive which pushed Russia into a war economy. Before the Kharkiv offensive there were huge periods where Russian fire rate massively dropped and matched Ukraine's fire rate, however after a year or more of a war economy and rocket and artillery shells being given to Russia from north Korea and Iran, Russia can maintain its advantage. However for its tanks most tanks I see now are revamped 1960s, 1970s and 1950s models and not many 90s and not as much 80s series.
