Radon is a serious health threat. David Smith recommends that all radon mitigation systems are installed by a professional licensed radon mitigator. Go to www.davidsmithradon.com/find-a... to find a professional near you.
In this video, David Smith shares suggestions for different methods of radon point of entries for new construction; the Tee Method, the Interior Footing Tile Method, the Sump Basin Method, and the David Smith Method.
Check to verify legal requirements in your state.
Most commonly, the Tee Method is utilized. It's important to make sure that you add perforated tile on each side of the Tee---but NOT through the Tee as that restricts airflow which is critical for a passive system. Stabilization can be an issue.
The Interior Footing Tile method can be an effective way of installing a passive radon system but we stay away from this method of installation because of the potential for damage to the interior footing tile due to invading the tile.
The Sump Basin Method is when you build the pipe coming out of a sump basin. It's important to use a gasket to make the seal tight. This method is not allowed in Illinois due to concerns that when sump is replaced the mitigation system is disrupted, potentially rendering the system ineffective and increasing the possibility of carbon monoxide poisoning.
The David Smith Method: We created a platform, raised with two pieces of perforated tile to stabilize the pipe, and use a bolted flange to glue and seal the stub and cap it off. We call this product our New Construction Platform. You can purchase it at
