Hi, thanks for your question. So, the N501Y amino acid mutation has independently developed in three different variants: B.1.1.7 (or, 20I/N501Y.V1 / "UK" variant)--the topic of this video; in B.1.351 (or, 20H/N501Y.V2 / "South Africa" variant); and P.1 (or, 20J/N501Y.V3 / "Brazil" variant). Each of these three variants seem to be able to transmit more easily than variants that do not include the N501Y amino acid mutation--we now have pretty good evidence about that (it may be due to it having a higher viral load, or it may be due to its ability to infect younger more socially active adults, for example). Each of those three variants, however, also include different combinations of other mutations, besides N501Y. So, they have N501Y in common but other genetic mutations that are not in common. I checked NextStrain, which is the global genomic sequencing database, to see what has been entered into the database for Hong Kong. I see that in early January 2021, two sequences were submitted to the database from Hong Kong that were classified as 20I/N501Y.V1.. that is, the UK variant.. the one I was talking about in this video (nextstrain.org/ncov/asia?f_country=Hong%20Kong). The location of exposure is listed as Hong Kong in the database, suggesting (if the data entry is accurate) that these cases were locally transmitted within Hong Kong back in January. Looking at the cases, I see a bit of a spike in cases in late January, so it seems possible that uptick in cases was driven by the B.1.1.7 variant (www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/china-hong-kong-sar/). It's likely that the B.1.1.7 variant remained in Hong Kong since January and perhaps is re-emerging in cases now. Here in Thailand, where I live, we only recently had the B.1.1.7 variant arrive in our country and it caused a big spike, as it spread very well in nightlife and pubs among young people. It's uncertain exactly what the mechanism(s) is(are). But, with Thailand as one example, once it arrives in a location, it spreads rapidly!

Not substantial evidence that variants cause differences in clinical outcomes. However, it seems B.1.1.7 (and probably other variants of concern) are better at transmitting. So, overall, more people will be hospitalized and/or die but not because the virus is “stronger,” but because it’s infecting more people.

I have heard of people who have covid, not sue if it is the new "mutant strain" or not (willing to bet another one will come along when it is needed), some didn't know they even had it and to others it was like a cold. Meh. I have heard it is just like a slightly stronger, but more contagious flu with a 99.97% survival rate. Feel free to take precautions if you are worried though.

You can use it as a treatment not as a vaccine. A vaccine teaches you how to make antibodies so the effect is prolonged. The injected plasma on the contrary will be eliminated in a matter of weeks. Unfortunately most studies show that plasma from recovered Covid patients has a very limited efficacy. Lab made antibodies like the Regeneron cocktail are more promising and simple to use.
