As a brand new deckhand in 70's I was on-boarded in Anacortes Washington onto Overseas Alice, an oil tanker bound for Alaska. The burly bosun ordered the crew to the forecastle for a meet & greet. There he lambasted us with "You son-of-bit*&*& better not f*&*-around, If you plan on not following orders, lets have it out here and now. I'll whip your ass up and down the floor. etc-etc.......Anyone? Anyone? Good, go stow your gear." Later on watch he encouraged me on the great life the SIU (Seafarer International Union) provided him; a new Ford Thunderbird, a couple of houses for him and his wonderful wife. But the tone had been set. And topped with the rollingest voyage I never could have imagined. The good part? The Alaska coast line was unreal.

You know chief, I look at you, listen to you, I see my late uncle. You don't look like him, you don't sound like him. But I see a lot of him in you. He was a chief engineer on merchant vessels for many years. I read so many of his books about electrical topics and learned much from those books. My uncle was very skilled. Electrical, HVAC, you name it. He had lots of stories. Many trips to Viet Nam during the 60's and 70's. It's like the ghost of my uncle on KZbin and you are nothing alike personally but almost like a twin professionally. Best regards and good fortunes on your travels. 😎😎

The last time i was inside a ship's engine room, i was probably 12 years old. Was a Greek tanker with a 7 cylinder main engine. I wish i had taken that career path, i never got married nor had children so i think seafaring could have been a good fit. I still love ships, especially the engine room. I'm a machinist by trade but have always loved n been fascinated by mechanical creations, currently busy making a five journal high pressure water blasting pump crankshaft n it's journal journal layout makes me think of a ship's main engine crank.

The right amount of rest? I'd held back a story. In 87 USN there was an E5 Messman 2nd class. He scrubbed an oven in the Wardroom galley (kitchen). He left a cotton bar-mop towel in the oven on self-cleaning cycle. Then he fell asleep. Under an hour later it burst into flame. The O2 level, officers country, filled with smoke. NO ONE DIED. Very well could have been disastrous. When you're supposed to sleep.... sleep.

You are correct, there is not a whole lot to see, or, if there is, I never saw it, in Port Said. I wonder what the name of the jack-up is that you passed by as your ship was entering port. We had a small supply base there when we were working for BP north of Port Said, and I got to see a lot of the shipping entering/leaving the Suez Canal.

@@ChiefMAKOi Unfortunately I don't have the same excuse as you since I am the "head chef" in the household. But if you want to give your wife a night off and eat Filipino food at top level allow me to give you a couple of names (I have gotten the idea you live in the Manila area): Toyo Eatery ((was?) temporarily relocated while refurbishing their standard location), Gallery by Chele and Hapag. An extra special plus goes to Hapag for a fantastic wine matching with the food. In case you end up on a ship where the navigator needs very dark glasses, a dog and a white cane.... 🤓 There is this joint next to the main train station in Bern, Switzerland called Mille Sens with a Pinoy head chef.
