A few hours ago I came across a video uploaded by Nas Daily entitled "Shipping Trap". It contained a lot of false information which triggered me to do this reaction video. Chief MAKOi Seaman Vlog

I appreciate you taking the time to give feedback on Nas's video. I do agree that some points were taken out of context and exaggerated. That said, I believe that you completely missed the point of the video which was first to entertain and then inform the world of a major issue in the shipping business. Having holidayed on four continents and over 60 countries, I can assure you that Nas's remarks about the shipping industries have some truth in them. I have seen no fewer than 15 ship wrecks off shore of mostly developing countries in which no one takes the responsibility of the clean up! Your response "it's not that simple" belies the fact that shipping companies and owners do get around rules and regulations to create some of the worlds' most horrific natural disasters. Furthermore, often times, it is the captain of the ship who goes to jail for misconduct rather than the owners who didn't keep the ship up to standard. According to you, Nas is irresponsible for misrepresenting the facts, but you are also misrepresenting how irresponsible and greedy the shipping industry can be as well. It would be nice if both sides told the truth for once and took responsibility for chaos they created. Therefore, I see your nitpicking as an affront to the real ills of a global problem that has led to the suffering of people who can ill afford such woes!

Not all companies run their ships under a flag of convenience in an irresponsible manner. That being said I have been privy to experiences shared to me from fellow mariners sailing under the US flag doing nightmare re-flags. A lot of these chiefs and captains will take used spare parts after they consume the new spares, and tape them back up in the boxes and put them back up on the shelves and not mark them as consumed in the ship’s inventory system. Why do they do that? Because when the ship gets turned over to new management or gets reflagged those Chiefs and Captains get credited for these spares that were never consumed. Ships have been reflagged with the main engine not being able to get much past maneuvering rpm, 1 generator barely in working condition, with the others running in emergency status. Once colleague of mine was riding with the foreign crew prior to reflag and they were literally shitting in five gallon buckets and throwing it over the side. The shipping industry can be very greedy. Thats why flag of convenience exists. I respect the foreign crews with talent and skills having to work under such greed. They deserve to be paid more for what they do if they are properly trained and perform up to standard. But this is not always the case. Including under the US flag as well.

Taking a holiday does not qualify you as a professional . The problem with Guys like Nas is they are going for pure entertainment value. If he had delivered the info in a reasonable manner instead of exaggeration the result would have probably been different. 🤫

@@SayosenMijutsu First, don't insult me for taking a holiday. Second, ask me why I've been to so many countries while on holiday! I teach people about potable water! Therefore, your assumptions about me knowing nothing are invalid! I know the native peoples more than most tourists who just waddle through a country on camel back unconcerned about what is happening with the ecology! Therefore, you missed my point: there needs to be a discussion about all the ship wrecks that have been abandoned! So let's stop posturing and answer the question how people get around those so called tight laws!

Considering all the misinformation and outright lies, and just downright stupidity on all sorts of media, and how many fall for it and believe it, I think that there are many, many people that lack the ability to fully comprehend what is just plain stupid and how many medias that specialize in misleading and lies to exploit those that lack the ability to differentiate truth from lies and stupidity, while the propagandist use "free speech" as a shield and get away with lies and spin, with twist and spin of the lies as truth and truth as lies, I seriously question that we all have the brains and means to validate and evaluate the media on their own, regardless how obvious the stupidity and misleading the media messages are, but the real consequences are that they can vote, carry guns and even hold public office and the more ignorant and stupid and hate mongering they are, based on more lies and spin, the more power they get. There is nothing good to come from this! Should free speech cover outright lies, spin , sedition, subversion and even treason? I think not!

When I did my apprentice to get my motorman's papers my mentor that had 10 years experience had less pay then my student allowance... I'm Swedish and the ship was Finnish, the crew up to second engineer was Filipino. I had my best apprenticeship there, they took good care of me and taught me a lot. Yes it was cheap labour, but the skill and professionalism was higher then I experienced later by crew with at least 3x the pay. The cheap people in shipping is based on the nationality in the passport not the skill of the worker.

It is also true for engineers in land based jobs. Passport holders from third world countries like Philippines and India often starts with very low salary but their knowledge is better than those born in the country they work in like middle east. Your reaction video was informative, factual, and based on your years of credible experience. One of the things that caught my attention was regarding discrimination, and Filipinos being considered as "cheap labor". I salute you for standing up for our skillsets and capabilities. Thanks for clarifying that "cheap labor" does not mean that our talents and skills are inferior or not at par with other nationalities. If nobody from the shipping industry is updating that article which I believe can be updated by anyone then your industry has only itself to blame because if your industry has not realised by now Wikipedia is a trusted source of information. I totally agree that NAS exaggerated and oversimplified the point in the video. I believe most people in the marine industry are great and ethical people but there are enough black sheeps in the industry who are willing to sell out for money. Any accidents happen a few hundred million paid to the Ship‘s crew who get jailed is pocket change to this shipping bosses. The ship’s crew are willing because after the jail term they don‘t have to worry about finances. When he used a warehouse explosion as an example of why ships are dangerous told me all I needed to know that he was worthless Clickbait. He also proved himself wrong by mentioning that Lebanon was detaining the ship BECAUSE IT DIDN'T PASS THE SAFETY INSPECTION! Doesn't matter where you are flagged, you are still going to get inspected by the port authorities or Coast Guard, and if a flag state doesn't enforce any rules as he claimed, then the big ports aren't even going to let those ships in, at least not without a thorough inspection. So in order for Panama to be desirable, they need to be strict enough to be acceptable by the port states. It's kind of like how a tourist can come to the US and drive using their home country drivers license, as long as the home country follows the minimum standards for driver testing that match the US standards. If French drivers started having lots of wrecks in the US, they might lose that privilege. So if Panama or Liberia actually allowed what he claims, they would not be a trusted flag anymore. Yes, there are some places where your ability to enter the port is based entirely on the size of your bribe, but most of the ships that go those places, and probably fit the description in the video, only go to places like that, where no one really cares about such things. But if they want to go to a developed nation, and be an international shipper, they can't be pieces of junk, because they will never be let into port.

Shipping industry is one of the most misunderstood by laymans. They have clue how shipping works and these "influencers" will say anything just to get some views.
@johnman86734 жыл бұрын
I've worked as a ship finance lawyer for 20+ years. The Nas Daily video is full of misconceptions about how the shipping industry actually operates and thank you, Chief for having the patience and time to point this out. I would only add a few additional points which I realise are very obvious to you and me but maybe not to others. All ships (even if registered in Panama or another flag of convenience) will be subject to inspection when they visit ports around the world and any ship which is not in compliance will be detained. All ships will have had taken out in respect of them insurances, protection and indemnity cover, Certificates of Financial Responsibility when visiting the USA etc which will pay out in the event of an oil spill or other accident. Any bank which has financed a ship will be very concerned to ensure that the ship is well maintained, in class and properly insured and operated.

@John Man : Our news reporters in Australia are well informed, and as a consequence, most Australians are aware that ships & cargos are inspected, as are the routes to be taken by the ships. Australia has to protect its very valuable reef systems and fisheries, as well as the lives of international crew aboard all ships entering Australian ports. We have seen numerous Australian Mainstream Media reports over the decades discussing these issues, (including ship's safety, cleanliness, and treatment of livestock), so it's great to see such a well reasoned series of opinions expressed here in the Comments section, including your own, John.

In the past shipping companies would run a ship on a years articles paying the crew with checks when the voyage was completed. When the checks were attempted to be cashed by the crew they were not cashable in some cases the bank accounts were closed. The ships were just abandoned and owners disappeared. It was because of these actions all crew had to be paid in cash at the end of shipping articles. That has been changed to providing cashier checks and cash at end of articles or a combination of both. In USA all seamen were considered as wards of state and came under the protection of the US Shipping Comissioners Office.
