This is a very inspiring palette mix, watched this after watching the squirrel painting. The leaf shaped swatches were perfect. Happy autumn in 2022, as well. Thank you also for all the extra info you always provide about colour mixing ideas.🧡

I think Aureolin yellow PY40 is the perfect yellow. I have found it the least staining of all the transparent yellows. But it does change color to a brownish hue when exposed to daylight. So color isn’t permanent. But wonderful for sketch books.

Thank you Renee. Interesting to learn about how the aureolin dulls when exposed to daylight but, like you say, okay for my sketchbook! Take care 😊

Beautiful palette and swathes 🧡🍁🍂🌻 Rose Madder genuine is a natural fugitive pigment made from the roots of the madder plant, pigment NR9 manufactured by Winsor & Newton is a soft granulating rose similar in hue to Quinacridone Rose. Aureolin PY40 is also fugitive but some fugitive pigments are very beautiful and hard to replicate, it’s nice to try them and see if the hue alternatives are similar. Jane Blundell's blog has swathes and pigment information of most watercolours and is a great resource

Thank you! It's interesting to learn about different pigments and I appreciate you letting me know about these two. Disappointing to learn about the aureolin - I'll have to check out Jane Blundell's blog before I make a custom palette next time! Like you say though, it's nice to try different colours and I can always swap this one out if I don't like it. Have a great weekend 😊

I love the leaf swatch sheet! I even got one from Denise Soden when she was trying to bring some fun to swatching in her videos and viewers asked her to sell them from her Etsy page. They are long gone but I believe that I may have a digital file for re-printing. I enjoyed your leaves too! I have used the laminate idea before too and you can even use it as an extra mixing area for small amounts of paint. I am looking forward to seeing your autumnal artwork in a future video! Here’s hoping we see a UK centric landscape soon! Til next time, be safe and enjoy your day!

RS hematite violet is one of my absolute favourites. The way it's such an opaque Mars violet with so little effort, but washes out into a speckled grey/purple/brown with so much variation and texture makes me so very happy. I really like the look of DS Sodalite but I suspect I could mix something very close myself with a heavily granulating PBk11 and one of my many blues. I have that problem with a lot of the Primateks though, they're very pretty but so easily duped with a bit of mixing that I can't justify their price. They are enjoyable to watch being swatched though!

I agree! I'm looking forward to seeing how I can use the hematite in my paintings 😊

I love ds and I love the primateks. I don't see why people think they are expensive. They are no more expensive than any other paint. Then again I don't really look at prices. If I want it I buy it. I tried mixing bk11 with others to get there but they just didn't fit the bill to me. Unlike mimicking schmincke. That I managed quite easily. Funny how we are all so different but if you asked an anthropologist they'd say we are all the same lol.

I bought Daniel Smith's Rose Madder Permanent after reading Jean Dobie's book and from what I gather it's very close to a match to the real deal (although the WN Rose Madder Genuine apparently smells like roses?). Transparent, gentle granulation/flocculation, and non staining. Mixes really nicely with Viridian and Cobalt Blue. For Aureolin, I prefer to use something like Winsor Yellow (that pigment can be found in most artist grade brands) or Sennelier Yellow Light (a bright slightly buttery and slightly cool yellow).
@SarahNewburyArt2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Alejandro! That's really useful. I'm intrigued to know if the Winsor and Newton Rose Madder really does smell like roses! I do already have some Winsor Yellow so I could always swap this with the aureolin if I need to. Thank you for the tips 😊

I love nature inspired browns. To be honest I have way to many but can never resist to buy me a burnt umber from each brand or translucent browns in general. Its ridiculous and I should make me a full palette of the ones I have just to go hahaha on myself. Brands of brown in my stash are white nights, sennelier schmincke and ofcourse ds. I adore the variations between different sienna's while having it contained to one pigment. Like a little colonial palette on itself. I would love to have your light ochre added. As normal ochers tend to be more opaque wich I hate so I mainly use a raw sienna instead.
@MoonSpinners3 жыл бұрын
I have the same problem 😂 but my brands are Windsor and Newton, Schmincke, Roman Szmal, Daler Rowney, White Nights, Jackson’s, and Van Gogh, and Mijello mission gold! 😱I may have a problem 🤣🤣

Schmincke produce a transparent ochre / Lasur Ocker PY 42 hydrated iron oxide (657). It's a staining colour fully transparent

I think rose madder genuine is made of real rose madder and have almost no lightfastnes but rose madder permanent is a blend to look like genuine rose madder but still keeping lightfastness.

I'm planning on updating my watercolours to winsor and newton professional. You cant get any other good quality paints here such as daniel smith white knights shimanke etc. I heard that w&n browns are bad. Does mixing your own brown help?
@SarahNewburyArt3 жыл бұрын
I'm no expert but have enjoyed experimenting with mixing my own browns and greys. The resulting colours can be much more interesting and less dull than ready made browns so I highly recommend trying it out. Try mixing complementary colours on the colour wheel using colours in your own palette and see what you can come up with 😊
@Renilou23 жыл бұрын
I use many brands and have a huge collection of different brands & personally prefer W&N professional earth pigments that are your browns and so forth (PBk7) Natural Iron Oxides and (PR101) Synthetic Iron Oxides. They are beautiful hues & usually more transparent than some other brands. When dry some can be harder to re-wet but with a drop of Vegetable Glycerin in your poured pan, it's exactly the same formula as W&N pre-poured pans. ( Info from W&N customer support) This is the only difference between their tubes and pans. Otherwise I adore the Holbein earth pigments. I do usually make my own browns but having some for back up is very handy. I use them to mute out bright colors for the best skin tones ever that are non staining.
@mydogeatspuke2 жыл бұрын
@@Renilou2 Winsor and Newton pans aren't poured, they're cut blocks from a large cake. Adding glycerin to your poured pans does help some pigments from completely drying out, but anything earth or granulating is going to need a a couple more drops and will still crack and shrink down significantly once dry. Their customer support are sadly telling porkies and shouldn't be trusted.

Hi Sarah, thanks for the video! Rose Madder Genuine is a natural pigment that is extremely fugitive so companies now make a synthetic version from different pigments to replicate the shade, such as the Mijello Rose Madder you’ve used (which should be appropriately labeled as a hue, but Mijello never does that). I’m not sure why professional artists still recommend this paint given its issues. Also wanted to ask if it’s going to be a sketchbook only palette since you’ve also included Aureolin PY40 which is also very fugitive and will discolor into a muddy brown. Thanks again!
@SarahNewburyArt3 жыл бұрын
Hi Aman. Thank you for the information! I didn't realise that Aureolin was so fugitive so maybe this will have to be a sketchbook only palette! I could always swap the aureolin out but its a shame since it's mentioned quite frequently in the new book I mentioned and I was keen to try out some of the colour mixes mentioned. It's all good learning though. Take care 😊

Your Rose Madder being (PR176 is actually a Benzimidazolone carmine) pigment. Daniel Smith has this in a color called Carmine, only darker and richer. Daniel Smith also has a Rose Madder Permanent that's (PR 209, PV 19, PR 202) that's the closest match to the Genuine that I've found. Rose Madder Genuine is very expensive. The term Rose Madder (PR9) Rubia Tinctorum Dye) is most commonly used to describe the color made from the Madder Lake pigment, which is a traditional lake pigment extracted from the roots of the common madder plant Rubia Tinctorum. Rose Madder Genuine (NR9) is a fugitive, transparent, nonstaining, with very low tinting strength. But so pretty! Alizarin Crimson (PR83) comes from the same source made in a different way. I would never use these pigments for any framed painting. But great for a sketch book.
@SarahNewburyArt2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Renee, This is very useful. Someone else commented that the Daniel Smith Rose Madder permanent was a good alternative so I might look into getting a tube of that to use where I want more permanence.
