Hi everyone and welcome to another video! I’ve finally finished setting up my single pigment granulating watercolours mixing palette so I hope you enjoy watching the process. It took quite a long time to set up but it was a lot of fun and I’m really pleased with how it turned out. Let me know if you’ve set up a palette like this and which unique supergranulation mixes you’ve come up with- I’d love to hear them! Take care, Sarah x

Hullo Sarah, I feel like I have said this before and feel free to gloss over it if so. I have made my own palettes for quite some time. I remember when I bought my first replacement color. I decided to break away from my Grans color selection and bought a new blue! (My Gran set up my first watercolor palette from her professional kit) I used it and I was dumbfounded! There were all of these spots in my sky! No flat even color! I had no ideas what granulating colors were! I was convinced that the paint was defective! I got quite an education when I tried to return it at the art store. It was a kind education by a compassionate man, but I still felt very stupid. I did go on later to create a complete granulating color palette, yellow was the most difficult to find and I ended up making my own! I believe that you have created a wonderful palette and I am looking forward to watching your creation come to fruition and watching your video featuring this color palette! See ya then!

I very much enjoyed this video and especially the bits where you made your own mixes, that is where things get exciting. I will never be able to justify getting the granulating pigment sets, and there are far to many very similar cross over. So this really interested me as I do actually have some great granulating pigment already, scattered throughout several makes as are yours. I think I would have included a triad of stronger coloured non granulators to strengthen up the colour variation available, as the colour range is somewhat muted. I also like the idea of granulation in portraiture or life studies too, so would want to build a collection with that in mind. I really liked some of the last mixes you did, the last two in particular. I learned a lot from this video, thanks for sharing this palette with us.

Thank you for this very informative and inspiring video! I did just that, made my own palette w single pigment granulating colours. It was really fun to explore. I could never afford to buy all the sets, and when I did a chart of what mixes are used by Schmincke I found loads of other combinations they haven't used ( yet!) . That is what makes having this single palette so useful, making up these other mixes! I first " shopped" around in my own stash for pans w granulating pigments and then bought those that I didn't have, wich turned out so much cheaper for me in the end even if buying watercolours of quality never comes cheap;-)! But this has been a fun journey!

Thank you Charlotta! So happy to hear you've made you're own palette up too! It was fun trying to recreate Schminke's mixes but like you said, there are so many other options as well! Have fun 😊

Your mixes that are inspired by the pebbles are, to me, more interesting than the Schmincke Supergranulating paints. Your mixes are very pretty.

Brilliant video Sarah! For weeks now I’ve been playing around with my existing pigments to make DIY granulating watercolors. I don’t have PBk11 so it’s top of my list. I’m going to go through your video again and pick out some other pigments I might want to purchase. This took hours of research and filming. It’s truly a masterful video and so many people will find it interesting and useful. Thank you for your hard work and making it easier for me to make my DIY granulating watercolors. Your Schmincke matches are spot on and your DIY granulating watercolors are beautiful, even your swatch card was lovely! 🤩

I really like the idea of labelling by pigment number. Prussian blue PB27 is not lightfast because the pigment itself is not lightfast. Though it's supposed to "recover" if you put it in a dark place, but I've never actually tried that.

Not being a naturally gifted artiste I started off with Chinese style painting - it's very forgiving. I'm like to start Western water colour painting - I'm sure I'll be more gifted in that style. I don't want to use student paints because they're, student paints; I'm too old to be a student...so, I want to use pro paint and I was wondering which pro paints to use? However, when I saw the price of the paints you use - each painting I do had better be a masterpiece. Can you suggest another brand, please? Winsor & Newton mayhap? :)

Hi Sara! I just checked my magnesium brown which has been on the window sill for almost a year now. It's fared really well compared to the swatch I kept in the drawer. Barely any change at all. Hope this helps 😊

That was perfect timing as I’m also setting up my granulating palette at the moment! I’m going to restrict myself to a 24 palette (which can actually hold 37 half pans) - we’ll see how that goes 😂 I only bought Volcano Red and Yellow from the super granulating range and I will only add colours that granulate strongly. I recently bought the Dusk colours by Van Gogh (mixes with PBk11) and they are beautiful, so I’ll add those too. It’s so much fun playing with the granulating colours and I’m planning a large painting with mine!

1) Thank you for sharing your granulating palette and swatches of your selections. I have made my own DIY super-granulating mixes doing something similar to what you’ve done, and it is loads of fun and - like you said - much more cost-effective than buying the pre-made color blends! 2) I like your misting bottle! Where did you get it, if you don’t mind my asking?

@@SarahNewburyArt Thank you so much for responding - I am going to look on Amazon for a similar bottle now. Hopefully this will be a move in the right direction! (The one I currently have just sort of….dribbles all over the place. And so did the one before it. And the one before that just randomly stopped spraying. 🤦‍♀️)

Such a fun video! I love all those mixes!! Have you ever tried Schminckes French Ultramarine, because Schminckes French version of Ultramarine blue is the most granulating and beautiful Ultramarine available within professional commercially available paints- in my (and most others) opinion lol. I love that Hematite black from Schmincke! I want to add, since you didnt mention it, that Prussian Blue is super fugitive too. The color returns when enveloped in darkness for awhile but immediately fades again when introduced to light- I think mostly in watered down applications but in masstone as well. But anyway I really enjoyed this video, i love how you add the name and pigment info on the screen in addtion to having the info written down. So great. Thanks so much for sharing. Much much love ❤

Thank you Nadeane! I think I do have a Schmincke pan of French ultramarine.. from the first 12 pan set of Schmincke watercolours I ever bought. Perhaps I'll have to substitute it in instead of prussian blue.. such a shame it's fugitive- I didn't realise so thanks for the heads up! 😊

These are absolutely lovely mixes! You've inspired me to do some rock studies of my own. Frankly, you've come up with a better selection of color combos than some of the original SCH ones. Absolutely adore the first one and the one you came up with, as well as the 4th from the top, in the first column. Thanks for showing just how colorful stones can be. :-)
