I saw a Model 3 Highland on November 6, 2023 (evening), in Milpitas CA (city between San Jose and Fremont). That car did have covers over the taillights and headlights. I did spot another M3H in late December in Milpitas without covers during daylight hours. They are surely road testing in the south bay.

It’s not a zero-sum game, and Tesla fans always claim that they’re for the shift to sustainable trans, so we can use ALL the help we can get." On the contrary. It's a zero sum game. The more market share one company gets the less market others gets. "Tesla can’t do it all by themselves." Of course they can if they have to. If all other automakers would disappear Tesla would fill in the gaps.

I saw a Model 3 Highland near Tesla's Palo Alto, California HQ yesterday. It was black with black covers. It was NOT marked as an Engineering vehicle, so it may have been a preproduction vehicle. It accelerated away from the stop sign really fast, so I suspect it may have been a Performance model.

G'day Rob, I was wondering if you have been keeping track of Tesla's roadmap going forward for acquisition and production of US-made batteries so that we can get some idea of how the IRA requirements might affect US sales going forward? For example, do you have a record of how much capacity from the battery factories under construction by companies like Panasonic has been officially committed to Tesla, or have there been no official announcements about this?

@@westcoast8562 Agreed, but doesn’t change the fact that the presumptions stated are misguided. They are performing pack magic circuit changes when 400v is detected to “split the pack” so it’s going to charge differently than a full pack at 800v. I don’t know if it will be better, worse, or how different. the point remains it won’t be just filling in the missing peak as suggested.

Not specifically related to this edition, but just to flag up that there is a growing headwind for Tesla and other EVs in the UK. Reasons: 1. Insurance rates for Tesla cars in particular, are going through the roof - the reasons being: Very expensive repairs and only a few specialised repair shops currently. Very long wait for replacement parts, can be months, so the cost of the courtesy car is therefore high, the replacement cost of battery replacement (if damaged) is extremely high, Tesla cars do not have soft shock absorbing bumpers, in fact the rear door of the model Y protrudes beyond the bumper, so easily damaged. 2. Range anxiety with insufficient charging points. 3. The cost of electricity has short up, our night time rate has doubled, this hits the EV owners that use night time charging. 4. The UK has extended the deadline to go all electric by five years, reducing the urgency to buy an EV. // All the above is causing second hand values to plummet, further reducing the desirability for folks to go electric. Hope this is just a UK thing.

BYD has often played games with its hybrids and BEV reporting - pretending hybrids are 'new energy vehicles' counted as 'electric vehicles.' How certain are we of their 4th quarter numbers? They broke out hybrids separately. Does that mean their BEV numbers exclude hybrids? Or is that an assumption? Got to be careful about assumptions around those guys. Thanks for your reporting, Rob.
@goldfishman321
@goldfishman321 Жыл бұрын
If you look at the most recent production and delivery report, they break out the 'New Energy Vehicles' by BEV and PHEV. I understand that you're claiming they could be adding the PHEV to the BEV vehicles, but if you look at the the 2022 numbers (listed next to the 2023 numbers on the report), they produced a larger number of PHEVs than BEVs thus making it impossible for them to be adding the numbers together as the BEV number would have to be larger than the PHEV number and that wasn't the case. The reality is BYD is going to out sell Tesla this year in BEVs and THAT'S OKAY. BYD sells multiple low cost vehicles with limited range. For example, the cheapest BYD Seagull has a CLTC range of 305 km with a 30.08 kWh battery pack. The MSRP starts at 73,800 RMB (~10K USD). They sold 280,217 Seagulls from April-Dec. Of course Tesla can't match that as they aren't manufacturing a city car with that limited range, nor do I think they have interest in doing so. I love Tesla and they're doing great leading the transition to sustainable energy, but I think we need to be comfortable with them not being the largest EV manufacture. It doesn't change the calculus of Tesla's long term value as we have so far yet to go in the automobile transition. Not to mention the potential value of Tesla's other businesses like storage, FSD and Optimus.
@Urgelt
@Urgelt Жыл бұрын
@@goldfishman321 okay. That was a very helpful comment. Thank you. BYD is doing pretty well. But they can't get into the US market (tariffs), and Europe will probably follow suit soon, to protect their automakers from Chinese dumping. China heavily subsidizes domestic BEV production. As far as I know, Tesla's GF Shanghai does not get production incentives from the CCP, and so the EU should remain open to those exports. Tesla does get tax breaks, but virtually all automakers do. So as I see things: - BYD is only barely profitable on BEVs, and that much is due to generous subsidies. - BYD won't have access to big, important markets where Tesla can operate. - BYD's success will mostly be found in China. That is not an unimportant market, of course. But I doubt BYD will keep pace with Tesla's planned expansion. Still, BYD is grabbing market share, albeit mostly in China. I see that as a good thing. More BEVs means fewer ICEVs. We'll take victories wherever they come from.

BYD grabbing market share in China will probably slow down once Tesla starts producing the $25k model.
@Urgelt
@Urgelt Жыл бұрын
@@enlasrocks BYD already has products down in those weeds. But their tech is not as advanced as Tesla's. We don't yet know what tech the $25K car will feature, but I think it's safe to project it will still dominate the tech in other brands. Tesla will not be making it easy for legacy brands to keep pace with it. But we have to acknowledge, BYD is getting product delivered at scale. Aside from Tesla, no-one else is. The others are all niche players, at this point. So it pays to keep an eye on what BYD is doing.

Tesla is my favorite company. But investing in a 70 P/E ratio stock is soooo tough. I think that’s totally ok. I fear so many people are going to be sitting on idle money for five years atleast. Tesla has a huge problem to solve. FSD and mass production of the robotaxi. Tesla is still my largest position but I’ve been accumulating HD stock, my second largest position. I’m thrilled for Tesla’s future and I do consider not investing in them now a gamble, potentially a loss. My plan is to divest everywhere and go all in Tesla as close to the horizon of robotaxi as possible. I am beginning to be more convinced that Optimus may see mass production before robotaxi does. Then some semi autonomy, and finally FSD in the city.

"Tesla is my favorite company. But investing in a 70 P/E ratio stock is soooo tough." 70 P/E is not that high for a tech company that is growing. "Tesla has a huge problem to solve. FSD and mass production of the robotaxi." That's Tesla's next phase. They will grow plenty without it, but will explode when FSD is solved. After that the next big thing is Optimus.

@@yourcrazybear I know. But growing where? It’s like the tenth largest company in the world. This isn’t like the 2020 boom where we went from 250th to 5th. The ceiling, market cap wise. Is visible. Year after year Tesla reduces its production guidance back from the 50% per year… until the next phase. Then they will have another massive 1-2 years of growth by turning on 10 years of work. Phase 3 of the cars will be great. It’s just probably 8 years off at most. Companies do not operate on yearly schedules. I would rather sit in apple for the next 8 years or until it becomes evident Tesla is getting ready to prove FSD profitability, robotaxi production online, Optimus in sight. I’m not sure FSD is going to function like your everyday Uber any time soon unfortunately… I mean can you actually imagine getting into an Uber without a driver right now? In LA? NY? Chicago… I don’t think so.. it’s possible.. it will most likely happen.. but it’s not as predictable as the iPhone 16 coming out next year. That’s all I’m saying. I consider myself all in Tesla… when we approach that point. Until then I HAVE to let my money accumulate atleast a healthy dividend. Anyone should. And then take all that money and put it back in Tesla when the horizon of automation approaches. And if I’m wrong, great, it’s still my largest position but I don’t think continuing to accumulate is the best move right now.

So the RWD Model Y uses panasonic/tesla 2170 batts? Always assumed the RWD used the LFP chem and wouldn't be eligible for IRA rebate. They obviously must not have the ability to manufacture enough 2170s to fit the Model 3. Building out capacity for the 2170s (as well as building their own LMFP chem) should have started long ago when they realized they couldn't solve the DBE process for the 4680s at the industrial level scale. This is surprising as Tesla usually hedges they bets, but they put all their eggs in the 4680 DBE basket and unfortunately they're years behind their ramp targets.

Don’t get me wrong, the CT is an engineering marvle as so many Tesla KZbinrs like to point out. But the average customer doesn’t care that Tesla saved money on parts or that they lead the 48v „revolution“. They just see the car being more expensive and performing under what was promised. You have to be a Tesla investor to care. Yes, Tesla is learning things they’ll use in future products and is without a doubt the best manufacturer. But again, why should a customer care? Doesn’t mean they won’t sell 200k a year, but it does mean that they didn’t achieve what they hoped for (maybe in 2025/26) and that the price will have to come done faster than people hope (IMO).

It’s a good question The analysts used to calculate how good or bad a company performed regardless of politics or wokism or political correctness. Nowadays analysts are paid to go on big media which is controlled by democrats and only want them to follow an Elon bad Tesla bad Trump bad narrative regardless of the performance of the company. Warren Buffet supported BYD for a few years but has sold most of his investment in them now. Buffett refuses to buy Tesla because Bill Gates keeps shorting Tesla which is idiotic but that’s because he’s part of the Elon Bad narrative Buffett is best friends with Bill Gates who is a staunch democrat and also follows the Elon Bad narrative So until big media becomes depoliticised this will remain the status quo.

Surprisingly, I got an email that I could configure my Foundation Series Cybertruck. No thanks, not for me until we get at least 400 miles range. 310 is not even close to enough for a truck that we would use to travel across US and Canada. Our 2018 long range 3, now at 285 miles max projected range, required 2-3 hrs extra travel time/day (over Google Maps estimates) for a 500-600 miles/per day travel through CO, NM and AZ. Cost per kWhr was 38-45 cents, did not seem that different than gasoline cost per mile. Most superchargers were at capacity which cut down the charge rate. The car more or less used 1.5 projected miles for every mile of highway travel. Going from Santa Fe NM to Las Vegas NM in the morning (18-25 degrees ambient temp) it was more like 2.5-3 mile projected miles of an actual mile. We find that 300 miles range is more than enough for around town or a 250 mile road trip. Anything longer it becomes a chore; you find yourself planning your entire travel around the stupid car. It should be an afterthought. BTW I estimated to be 65k in line for the Cybertruck so, not too many takers for the foundation series it seems. Not sure if this erases my position in the queue or not but either way, not for me at this time. I am considering replacing my 2014 S with a new long range S but other than range the Cybertruck is very compelling. Hopefully a couple of iterations of the 4680 gets us to over 400 miles of projected range and faster charging. It will probably take a couple of years and meanwhile I will continue to enjoy my old S.

It will always be a trade-off between power/range/weight until "the" inevitable battery breakthrough. Tesla by far has the best charging infrastructure so if you can't deal with it, you are not an EV customer UNTIL that battery breakthrough. Range is a non issue for national average population that doesn't drive more than 40 miles a day. You don't lose your place in queue if you refuse Foundation but you'll have to wait that much longer until they sell the 20k or so they say they will make. With 2 million reservations I'm pretty sure they will go down the list pretty fast. Literally the only thing different from Foundation over fully loaded Cyber is the laser etch badge that any 3rd party could put on your vehicle. 👀

@@cuda426hemi Thanks for the info on the Foundation Series question. I am happy to stay in queue and not pay an additional 20K for the Foundation series. To clarify, I am overall a satisfied EV owner, have been a Tesla owner since 2014. I completely agree with you that for daily driving and for shorter road trips, EVs especially Tesla are wonderful; I would not buy another ICE. We decided that we will just rent an ICE/hybrid for longer road trips. I wish Tesla would step on it regarding development of their 4680. Maybe I am just being impatient and they are doing the best possible.....Musk hardly comments on 4680 any more, he has moved to newer shinier things. It is in Baglino's remit and I find him admirably even-keeled anyway. Hopefully he is not terribly resource-constrained. Your point about dealing with power/range/weight issue in motion is well-taken, however, the challenge is not unique to electric vehicles. Considering all aspects of US travel we have to admit that it not optimal for EVs yet. A faster charging network is helpful but it does not obviate the need for increased energy density. Once that improves EVs will beat in all aspects of driving, not just most. Plus it would be very useful for the Semi. That is my opinion is a critically important vehicle for Tesla's mission. I look back to when we first took delivery of our S in 2014 and how far we have come. It is quite remarkable but somehow I had expected to be a bit further along. I wish Gen 3 would be more than on a drawing board at this point and out in customer's hands by end of 2024 but Musk put the brakes on that. That was not a good decision in my opinion, dare I criticize the great one, who is beyond all reproach 😉

Sorry I don't see it. Look at the fingers on Optimus it can't pick up the needle to thread it. I'm a long time Tesla fan but, Go see what other companies are doing to automate human tasks, they're NOT using humanoids. NO humanoid bot has shown any practical usefulness. Here are the problems. 1. It's made human-like so it can work in environments made for humans. This is the antithesis of "First Principles"! It compounds costs/complexity and reduces efficiency. Humans did not evolve to use technology! Do you want it to take the time to climb into a forklift to drive it, or would you rather just put the eyes and brain on the forklift? Should it stand still at a station packing widgets and only use it's legs to go charge itself? Also, many tasks that humans are doing don't necessarily need a humanoid form as much as it needs intelligence. For example, a task to clear a failed process inside a machine. It might be easier for a robot with one 4ft arm and a camera/light on its wrist. Where a humanoid might not be able to reach in and see at the same time. Same issues for a janitorial robot. What all the robots will need is the intelligence to use its dexterity and be told what to do. Making it more human-like doesn't make it more useful, in fact now it's limited to what a humanoid can do and will never do everything a person could. Are humanoids used anywhere today? 2. No one will buy it until you can demonstrate it doing something practical. The selling point of Optimus is that AI will make it useful. A Boston Dynamics robot might be able to walk a dog without getting knocked over but you can't tell it to walk the dog. Enthusiasts say it will be easy like Alexa or Siri just tell it what to do. But can you imagine it trying to put a leash on a dog? Then they'll say it can do the "easy" factory work first. Have you been to a factory? I've been in industrial automation for a long time. All the "easy" things are already automated. !!!!PLEASE !!! tell me what you think a humanoid will be able to do? A Person, without looking, can pick up just one small screw out of a pile and orient it in his hand while moving to place it. There is no way optimus could be that efficient. A small robot could. The only thing I heard was Brett Adcock saying it can move boxes and stuff around. This is not practical. A table waiter or stock boy might be a better first job. But the AI to do multiple tasks is more complicated than the ONE task of FSD. These things are not easy. It will all be dependent on machine learning. Which BEGS! number 3. 3. The really dumb thing is that the immature AI has more testable, practical, attainable and cost effective uses without a humanoid body. It could make existing dumb robots SO MUCH !!! more useful! (avoid a crash instead of detect one afterward) Or you could ask it to watch and control a conveyor system. Then you could eliminate all the position sensors in the system, just let the AI report where everything is. You could have it control actuators and machine interfaces because it can see where everything is and if it's working properly. It could report failures, defects etc. to the human operator that for years will still be needed to run the production line. Imagine how much !!! MONEY !!! you could save on parts, maintenance, plc programming, down-time etc. No robot needed just the intelligence. Fanuc had it's iRvision system for years already and is probably way ahead of Tesla in this area. This is putting the cart before the horse. To produce it now would be like making "one size fits all cars" without steering wheels just because they have FSD. There are SO MANY bots out there already. IMO Tesla would be wise to dump optimus and develop the agi or mini agi's or whatever to license to existing bot makers. I bet Elon doesn't talk about it anymore bc the engineers finally got the balls to tell him that it's dumb. 4. Why? "A human like appearance facilitates trust and natural engagement because we are wired for human face to face interactions" OK but in a factory? Personal interaction robots being made today are cartoonishly friendly looking. Even if Optimus could wait tables people won't care that is humanoid because they can see it's just a robot. If you make it look more human with a face it gets creepy. So why shouldn't it have an arm with multiple plate holders, and eyes in back so it doesn't bump into someone, and a napkin/utensil dispenser etc. Which would a Denny's owner buy? Is it because people get enamored with the sci-fi view of humanoids? The AI robots of the future will aid humans not necessarily emulate them. Shouldn't a care-taker robot look like a Patient Lift with big soft hands, or should a humanoid have to manipulate it? Could it even comfortably get its hand under someone to help them? A person can feel with all parts of their hand to reach under someone. A person can reach into their pocket and count change without looking, Optimus could never do that. Optimus is probably not strong enough for most construction, fire/rescue etc. Should you have a bucket, mop, vacuum, hand-held brushes etc. for a humanoid to clean floors? Or will Roomba make a smart robot that won't smear poop and have all the supplies and two skinny arms with a camera to clean bathrooms, refrigerators. etc. Imagine Optimus trying to clean the floor behind a toilet when it can't see what it's doing. Or trying to sling a mop. NASA didn't send a humanoid to mars.
