The WSJ has lost all credibility with me, this isn't the first time they have claimed Elon did something negative when in fact he didn't. Hopefully one of these legacy news agencies will go too far to allow Elon to take them to court and win when they lie.

@@SerendipityChild This is wrong and misleading. - He behaves the same way in the video as he always does - Claiming he's on too many uppers is something you're making up without any reason or evidence - The WSJ article didn't claim he was on "too many uppers". It claimed that he was on " LSD, cocaine, ecstasy, mushrooms and ketamine" among other illegal substances, and was so out of it that Gwyn had to take over the meeting. This claim is blatantly untrue.

@@SerendipityChild Let's say you are right...and we convict Musk of being a druggie based on that video. What is the point of the story 6 years after the fact? So Musk is a druggie in 2017. Tesla sold 103,000 cars in 2017. When the report came out in 2023, Tesla is on its way to selling 1,822,000 cars. That's a 17X difference. In addition, Musk is required to undergo regular drug testing as part of SpaceX contracts with NASA. Which by all reporting have shown not so much as trace elements of any drugs. So I would agree with Jim Roth and many others commenting here that this is not a journalistic story from a reputable newspaper that has won 39 Pulitzer Prizes. This looks like and sounds like a complete hit piece. Either that or a negative story to move the stock price and trade on the outcome. Happy to hear your view why you think the WSJ would write such a story.

For $15,000,000 Tesla could pay a couple of PR people to work with social media groups to create tons of Tesla content being shared. Rob, I see you out here trying to get people in the comments to understand the value of advertising and what you said in this video and countless others. Do what you will but I think you will be hard pressed to change people's minds when they can't understand what you said in the video. You made it clear that it was your opinion and that there's other sides to the situation. Clearly saying something like "Tesla should never advertise" doesn't make sense. EVERYTHING in extremes is bad. Tesla could make a much safer car but have it be way heavier, go slower, and be less appealing as well. Anyways, it should be obvious that advertising is worth considering. But props to you for continuously trying to get people to understand. You do a lot to just educate people.

Though it is the opposite of first principles thinking, it does feature gears and you can even stall the car so it will be fun to drive. It is always interesting to see what Toyota is spending its Research and Development budget on. -The head of Toyota said that perhaps someday they should consider a dedicated EV assembly line. Rob: Let me help you out there. Yes, you should. -VW said they were cancelling plans for really pushing EVs until 2030 or beyond. Rob: You will never be competitive that way Toyota. Oops, I meant Volkswagen, must have been a Freudian slip. -When Toyota was going to have fake gear shifting sounds and a fake gear shifting lever for its EVs. IMO the advertising should concentrate on the charging stations. That is the fundamental concern of a first time EV vehicle purchaser. An app that simulates EV ownership against your typical driving pattern would be small money well spent.

Instead of an ad, they should find a way to get Teslas into TV coverage during the Super Bowl, whether Half Time set piece, used in the production of the ad for some other products, maybe a cooler of Pepsi in the back of a CT for instance, or in the studio for the TV show.

@@SerendipityChild DId you reply to me by mistake? Not sure how my comment turned into an analysis of him taking uppers. I have watched hundreds of hours of Elon speaking in public. He is often this way, because he is nervous. He's got some kind of autism and public speaking is awful for him, but he's gotten better over time. Is some of it possibly attributable to sleep or taking an anti-anxiety drug? Sure. I am prescribed an anti-anxiety drug for public speaking, called propranolol. It's possible he takes it. It has some side effects which can make you slur your speech. But to me, having seen Elon speak publicly many many many times, this speech was normal for him. He just seems very nervous. Now, what does all that have to do with anti FUD advertising? Nothing... Anti FUD advertising would be things like "here is Tesla's true safety," "here is Tesla's true rate of vehicles fires compared to ICE vehicles," "here is Tesla's true rate of crashes while on autopilot." Etc. So idk how you thought I was talking about Elon?

8:49 I believe you've got this perfectly backwards. People want a regular car, they want a normal looking car that happens to be an EV. The CT is a diversion from Tesla's developed branding. It's not what they should be pushing to represent what the brand stands for. CT is going to sell well, there's a portion of the market that's all about it but that's not going to be who's buying the Model Y and 3s. The Raptor R does not sell Escapes, and the ZR1 doesn't sell Malibus.

Respectfully, a Superbowl ad would be the poorest manner in which to invest resources. Cybertrucks on the road, Tesla Charging Stations and the many Model 3 and Y and X and S are the best way to invest resources. Anyone who needs a Superbowl ad to introduce them to Tesla is not a Tesla buyer. And a good roll out of the "Model 2" at a price that isn't over $30k will seal the deal, though a Tesla Van for commercial and RV use as well as getting the Semi produced in larger numbers will help as well. The Roadster would be a statement that would be incredible, doesn't seem to be much of a priority for years from now.
@TeslaDaily

None of that stuff (which can and will be done anyway) is an investment anywhere close to $10M. That amount is not even a drop in the bucket for a $700B company, but it would probably be the most discussed Super Bowl ad. There is a reason “Super Bowl ad” is a phrase.
@halohat2286

@@TeslaDaily yes, it's expense/cost lol. That and the "funny" commercials are what make the news and the talk around the water cooler for a couple days after. The thing that isn't a drop in the bucket is the cost of a car, in this case a Tesla. In my opinion, and yes I recognize your opinion is valid, I don't think a Superbowl ad would sell any Teslas. Yes, some would say " oh cool, a Tesla Superbowl commercial, cool cars. I don't think anyone is going to say "wow, what's that, what's a Tesla, I'm gonna go buy one of those now". I also don't think because "Tesla can afford it" is a good reason to spend away millions on something that amounts to an ego pump. Maybe I'm wrong...

7:40 I think advertising still doesn't make much sense, regardless of model. They're still production constrained against the demand, and any more awareness can't change that. Future demand is of course important, but at the same time we know that more Teslas on the road increases the exposure and awareness organically like it happened so far. After they get their Mexico factory up and running, all scaled up, they will probably need some higher profile advertising. Until then, it's rather money spending without a ROI.

When I saw the yoke in that Honda 'concept' rendering, it reminded me of the steer-by-wire system in CyberTruck, and the 48v architecture that enables it. Normally, at this point in a 'concept' rendering I would start getting that dismissive reaction, knowing that legacy automakers will never be able to adapt... But then I remembered that Honda also makes a rather popular business jet. So maybe (just maybe) they'll actually be able to produce something in 2026. Right? Nah! What was I thinking?! LOL!!! 😅🤣😂

Rob, I'm capitulating on advertising. I've been holding out because I like the fact that the MY is the best selling vehicle w/o advertising. I like your point about getting Teslas on people's radars (called 'the funnel' in auto parlance) even though they may not be in the market for a few years or hold off a purchase to save money, etc. I also thought of another benefit...forcing demo inventory to remain fresh due to more impulse buying traffic. I'm not against more sales, just ridiculous wait times. Btw, I knew you weren't referring to CT and neither was I in my comment. Another thing I wish Elon would do before the Super Bowl ad (that is a good venue to kick it off) is make a loud post declaring Tesla will never advertise with an NBC affiliate due to unfair negative-biased coverage of Tesla. Then give the first ad to CBS and all the other networks will be put on notice to be fair going forward if they wish to see a dime from Tesla going forward. All this said, if the wait times go over a year, I'm still going to say I told you so.

Nope, just normal Elon-speak. He always stammers and drops words, as do many people with autism. Here is the correct explanation - “An issue that many Autism Spectrum Disorder individuals experience regarding their language is linguistic fluency. Some types of dysfluencies found in ASD individuals include stuttering, cluttering, other non-stuttering dysfluencies, as well as other atypical dysfluencies like word-final dysfluencies that involve abrupt stops in speech that affect the latter part of a word.” So there’s the correct explanation - autism, not uppers. Try again.

Legacy Autos book "advertising" against COGS, cost of goods sold. The legacy cost is around $1,000 per auto sold. For those who are advocating for increased marketing spend should perform an analysis of the impact on Tesla margins. I suspect most will not be willing to take that hit. Moreover, the loudest voices calling for more ad spend are seemingly the same ones complaining about margin pressure.
