Hi Phil and Karen. I’m sorry the kiln hasn’t worked out for you with drying your wood so far. Hopefully your newly designed pallets will work a lot more efficiently? Good luck with it. Stay warm when looking outside with that snow and ice everywhere looks bitterly cold.

Sometimes when I work outside, so many little things go wrong that I consider it more productive to just step away for awhile. Of course, I still ponder the problems that brought on my need for a break, but at least I’m not in the work environment that physically beat me down - kind of like the break between rounds in boxing. Once rested, I get back up to take another swing. Glad to see you two do this too.

Great interesting video. Thanks. Nasty weather your gettin. Jumpins. Will be neat to see how the new system works out. Could you put a temporary thing in between the rows to keep it stable while moving them with the tractor. You need the heat source right in the room. And get the room to 130F or a little more. Hoping things come along good for ya 👋👍🏻👍🏻👋

I think we are getting 6 more inches of snow tonight so by morning it will probably be snowing at your place . There was a comment that we should span a 16 piece of wood between the rows to catch each pile an that would help . We also can wrap each row with that stretch wrap stuff so that should help as well . Im thinking a wood boiler with a heat exchanger right in the room but i need a boiler big enuf to run for 12 hrs on a load of wood and be able to keep up with demand that kiln will need . Probably going to take a outdoor woodboiler to do that an even a used one is not in the budget this yr . Thanks Noel

Hello Phil and Karen. There is nothing as nice as fresh white snow covering a layer of solid ice. Working outside in that weather would have been a disaster. The new pallets seem to be a great idea. Is it possible to build a spacer something like a pallet. Than shove it side ways between the two rows of wood while moving the wood. Pulling it out when you get it to its final location, to prevent the wood from moving during transport. Thanks for another good video.

A way to stabilize the stacks is to put in some pieces that go across the air space here and there. Two or three bridges across every foot or two would probably work. Or keep a supply of 38 inch sticks

More airspace should equal faster drying outside and inside . I think we will try pine for our next run in the kiln that stuff dries really fast probably should have started with that first instead of the hardest stuff to dry . Fresh split ice cold red oak is probably the hardest wood to dry . Having that extra air space on the new pallets should make drying pine in there work alot better than the hard wood . We might also hang some plastic to force the hot dry air threw a tunnle of sorts so it has to work its way threw the wood . If that dont work then the woodstove is out an we will have to go with a wood boiler an supper insulate the room then i know we can get the temp up around 150 an just put the fan on the exhaust side an set it to come on when the humid reaches a certain level .
@906sisu5
@906sisu5 6 ай бұрын
I still think if you add a dehumidifier to the kiln it'll work better. You might be surprised on the economics of it. Leave the exhaust pipe going outside, add a dehumidifier with a pump to a 5 gallon bucket and go through a load. If you want you can put a "kill a watt" meter on the dehumidifier to see how much power it's drawing and figure out the cost for a load. It's where I would head anyway. Good luck
@AllenFamilyFirewood
@AllenFamilyFirewood 6 ай бұрын
So no heat blowing into the room and no air exchange i think is what ya saying with just a dehue running . I agree a airtight room with just a dehu running will eventually dry the wood the bigger the dehu the faster the wood drys . I belive most of the guys doing that have some sort of electric heater in there as well . Because our building is called comercial we have to pay a comercial power rate an thats about 25% more than residential rate . I think we pay around 14 cents pr kilowat hr but dont quote me on that . We had actually talked to another firewood guy near by that has his kiln set up with propane heat an a big dehu an he said its a break even deal for him an that he only does it to keep a few of his customers happy . The added $ he gets from kiln dryed just pays the power bill an propane bill .
@906sisu5
@906sisu5 6 ай бұрын
@@AllenFamilyFirewood I would continue the heat into the kiln, keep the outside exhaust so your shop doesn't rain inside, but a dehumidifier will pull the moisture out much quicker. Having one that has a built in pump to a 5 gallon bucket you won't have to empty it as often and you can still monitor how much water is coming out. Here in the U.P. we have one on the highest electric rates in the country and a friend of mine drys lumber in his shop with just a fan and dehumidifier. I myself am planning on making a kiln for lumber with a dehumidifier and a natural gas boiler

This is an Idea for you there is companys that will buy 1 way pallets we called them disposable pallets you can make the boards much thinner and can use a staple gun to put them together. I know my company spent a lot of money on pallets that could make a whole new business for you. I graduated high school with a guy and his whole life that all he did for a business is make pallets we are both retired now but I still do firewood for a side buck about 205 cords or 28 tri-axle loads of wood all for heat not much camp wood.
@AllenFamilyFirewood
@AllenFamilyFirewood 6 ай бұрын
205 full cords is a full time gig . I like making firewood alot more than making pallets but there are a few places around here that make pallets . Heck we could do real well just making an selling sheds . Having free logs an a sawmill opens alot of doors to make extra cash .
@zacharyhuberty3986
@zacharyhuberty3986 6 ай бұрын
As I've mentioned before, take your same experiment, even less heat but use a standard dehumidifier, you will see significant results. Air circulation and low humidity are the keys to drying wood, heated air speeds up the process but heated air at 50% humidity won't do a lot.
@AllenFamilyFirewood
@AllenFamilyFirewood 6 ай бұрын
The air in that room is being changed out every few min . Hot air comes in one side of the kiln room threw an 8 in pipe its 120 -140 degrees an 12% humid the air goes threw and around the wood and exits on the other side out a 8 in pipe at about 50% humid . The fan blowing the heat in threw the pipe is moving alot of air . So im pumping hot 12% air in an cooler 50% air out and its changing the air in the kiln room about every 3 min . I would think that by adding a dehue in the kiln with that much air coming in an going out that fast that it would be like trying to put a lil piece of ice on a hot day in the middle of a tar parking lot but i could be wrong it just dont make any sence to me how it could work . I can see that if i sealed the room tight with no heat an no air in or out that a dehue would work but with what we pay for electric it would cost more to dry the wood than the extra we can get from having it dry compared to just selling it green .

Now that you build skids with a wider gap in the middle. How about having as a one time purchase of removable plastic French Drain tubing that you slide in the middle. I think if quick-connected grid like setup, all interconnected powered by a high velocity leaf-blower style fan would turn your kiln into a constant wind tunnel.

Interesting stuff! If you put long pieces that connect the rows they should be stable moving around, maybe three 2x4s half way up and 3 more 3/4 the way up. Just stack them in and the weight/pressure of the firewood will wedge everything together keeping the stacks from leaning in or out.

Dana I agree with you he has the room insulated well, it looks like. just needs more BTU s. If he had a wood boiler and heat exchangers in room. With fans. He could burn his cookie wood in boiler. Cutting you out though. Yikes. 😂 Be cautious when buying heat exchangers built with fans combo. Unless it’s rated for say kiln use. the fans will possibly stop working. Hint,hint, Phil’s fan wasn’t even inside room. I called a company about a part I needed. . then asked about a product they sold. They were honest and said there combo units would not work in a kiln because of the fan rating in heated areas. I learned something that day it takes special fan’s possibly. Definitely ask. Karen, phil I want to thank you, your fan failure. It made me realize a normal fan would possibly not stand up to the heat. Always learning.

I agree the room is there but it really needs more insulation about a grands worth more. Outdoor wood boiler is the way to go its really the only thing that would burn wood that dont need to be fed every 5 or 6 hrs we need to get by 12 hrs on a load of wood because im gone that long when i go home . A grand for insulation an 10 grand for a outdoor woodboiler an yes 10 grand when ya add in a cement pad heat exchanger plumbing an instaling wiring to run the boiler . Just not sure we could ever make that $ back only making an extra 100 pr cord of wood . Not sure if a indoor wood boiler can run for 12 hrs an keep up with the demand the kiln needs but its worth looking into because there are a lot of used indoor boilers for under a grand .

My only thought for the kiln is, if you are heating humid air from one room and pushing it into another room you may actually be increasing the moisture rather than decreasing it. Ive ben told that but ive also ben told that once ya hit 130 it kills all the bugs . It would take quite the set up to hit 170 -190 an im sure at them temps it wouldnt take long to dry firewood . We figured it was worth a try using the woodstove an fans knowing that it wouldnt be as fast but we didnt plan on burning 3 cord to dry 3 cord so we need to figure something else out . We will try it one more time but this next time will be with pine because that dries really easy and we will add more air space between the wood . I absolutely hate freezing rain. It is horrible and I am too old to deal with it. It usually nocks our power out for a few days. It is even worse when all that frozen rain is covered with snow. It helps when you can make your own pallets because you can get what you want, when you want it. Last night we had bad thunder storms all night and it is about 40 degrees today. It is gray and sloppy wet. Great day to be in a wood heated house. I think you have your heat source too far from the wood and you need more air flow across the wood. Just like drying outside mut on steroids

@@AllenFamilyFirewood 100-200 cords to break even $ not to mention the time spend stoking fires, building pallets moving wood in and out of the kiln.🤔 sounds like more wood handling not less.

can you just put a wood stove in the drying room and shut the door? would it get too hot in there?

That would work great but the chimney would be 50 ft away . If i had it to do over i would have put the chimney at that end of the building . Im thinking a outdoor wood boiler is the answer .

@AllenFamilyFirewood I would try an electric construction heater in the room first maybe 2 of them to get the.temps up to 30 degrees Celsius for a week or so if that works then I would be more confident to invest in a chimney or outdoor wood boiler

I think your wood stove is too far away from your kiln. Hope the new pallets work better for you guys

It sure would work better if it was in the kiln but even being that far away we insulated the pipe an its bringing 120 140 degree dry air into the kiln room . Hopefully with alot more airflow on the pallets that helps speed the drying time .

No reason to be alarmed Karen- saw a post from let’s just say a “Prolific Commenter” saying he wanted to send a pair- now that’s low-hanging fruit couldn’t let that go! Laughing to myself, thinking poor Karen, that’s the last thing she’d like to receive! Enjoy the weekend!

I think we would have had about the same luck if we had done that . In a few weeks im going to put some pine in the shop for a week or so before putting it in the kiln . Pine drys really fast so i think we will have better luck with the pine .
