Common sense gun control would be to make more times before illegal use, also illegal, in an attempt to reduce the amount of illegal use partnered with earlier enforcement. The failure here was not gun laws, it was failure to enforce gun laws before a gun use situation. Thankfully enforcement did prevail eventually and stopped the illegal attempted use. But it would have been a lot better if enforcement had happened when the convict was attempting to buy an illegal weapon.

Quite a few points here. This should not be taken as being in defense of the SS though. I'm appalled at their lackluster "protection". 1. Agent shooting with handgun. Not likely to hit much at a considerable distance. 2. May not have even seen the perp. Just the gun so fired off some shots to the vicinity. This can accomplish at least a couple things. 2a. The real question about secret service resources is…. Does anyone in the secret service benefit financially from efficiency.. ? for example If I were a “special agent in charge” is any of my pay based on how much of my budget is left over after a particular event that monies were budgeted for is over? Or If I were the director of the secret service would my Christmas bonus be based on how much of the budget wasn’t spent on protection? The American people need to know.
