The Coast Guard says the five people aboard the missing submersible named Titan are now all presumed dead after a “catastrophic implosion” less than two hours into the dive on Sunday. A remotely operated vehicle discovered two debris fields about 1,600 feet from the site of the Titanic, where the crew was headed. NBC’s Tom Costello reports for TODAY.

We don’t know if they’re dead or not!! It’s possible they swam back up to the top and now stuck on an island waiting to be saved. IT’s ignorant to presume them dead when no body has been found! Edit; to all the nay sayers you all owe me an apology when and if they’re found.

I'm a structural engineer with 10 years experience working on composite aircraft and spacecraft. Here's my thoughts on the reasons why using Composites is a bad idea for a submersible. 1.) Composites are great for tensile loading applications, but terrible for compressive loading application, such as being submerged underwater. This is a well-known fact in the engineering industry. 2.) Composites are very brittle and do not yield. There are little to no warning signs when they fail, which is why failure of composites is catastrophic. 3.) Composites are susceptible to environmental factors. Under extreme temperatures, composite strength is weakened significantly. It's pretty cold at the bottom of the ocean. 4.) Composites have poor fatigue life compared to metallic structure and degrade after each dive/mission. In the aircraft industry, you would run a NDI test, Non-Destructive Inspection test, after a certain number of flights to ensure that the structural integrity has not been compromised. From what I've researched online, Ocean gate did not have any equipment to do NDI testing. All they did was use sensors to detect when the composite lost its structural integrity, which by then, would be too late. 5.) Composites are susceptible to corrosion when in contact with water, especially salt water. 6.) Composites do not buckle under compressive loading. With metallic structure, it will buckle and re-distribute the load. Many aircraft companies design composites so they do not buckle. 7.) Composites are difficult to repair. If a composite structure is damaged, you have to cut out the damaged section and bond on more layers of composites. You have to do alot of structural testing to justify the repair methodology. 8.) Composites are significantly more difficult to certify than metallic structure because of the points listed above.

i always think of bending a paper clip till it breaks the malleability factor with aluminum it snaps a few bends , the aircraft wing is doing like that nonstop so it must have a lifespan needs retired same with motorcycle frame etc. BUT my fiberglass bow limbs will last indefinite why i'd prefer fiberglass for a boat for example ...great write up , there's UV overlooked too and on the CF, i doubt a home shop set up can match the potential specs

“There’s a rule you don’t do that, well I did!” There are rules and regulations in place for basically everything because experts and research have taught us what to do and what not to do. He was told it’s not safe because experts/researchers don’t know how Carbon Fiber will react over time being under that much pressure that deep. Also the window wasn’t even certified to go to 4000 meters, only like 1,200! I’m sorry these people lost their lives, but the CEO looks so stupid now with all these interviews and videos coming out of how he actually felt about safety and how he didn’t listen to any of the experts who told him it wasn’t safe. Ironic the Titanic sank because the Captain didn’t listen to go slow through the ice fields and went full speed into an iceberg. The CEO didn’t listen to the experts and his submersible imploded with him inside.

What people need to understand is they had radio communication and tracking devices. One hour and 45 minutes into the dive they lost both simultaneously. The sub imploded right then and there. They didn't even know something was wrong most likely. They didn't sit there and suffer they didn't know that they were going to die. That pressure is so immense, that even the slightest breach in the hull will cause instantaneous death.. they literally would have died before the water even touches their skin.

The sad truth is you sometimes know you’re about to implode with creaking noises beforehand ,even with military grade submersible’s this happens and has been recorded when they’re pushed to the limit - also oceangate was fitted with sensors inside the hull to notify passengers and make noises when the hull was being compromised- so sadly they most likely had sensors go off inside the hull moments before implosion possibly even minutes notifying hull compromises and intense pressure

"Our society is slowly but surely learning that monetary gains should never be what takes precedence over peoples safety and security." Apparently, judging from this event, the preceding quote is a lie, through and through. "I’m just glad that it seems like most news broadcasts are relying on the voices of experts to relay the facts in this case." Oddly, "experts" only coldly render raw data on disasters to "news" outlets after the fact. Those "news" outlets then spin the data to weave whatever untruthful narrative is being pushed by their overlords to deceive the sheeple. If you think that there is nothing unseemly being hidden throughout this incident, you're a sheep. The passenger list alone reveals a lot.

I remember once back in the 60's we lived in Florida and my dad took 4 of his children to the airport on a Saturday so they could take their first flight up in what was called a penny a pound. I was about 7 and told my dad I was scared and he didn't make me go. The other 3 went. He said he would never make one of his children do something they were afraid of. But yes I grew up and have now flown all around the world.

Other news outlets I’ve heard are saying basically the same thing the submersible imploded at about 3200 meters or 10,500 feet so it was instantaneous death a small comfort but much better than thinking your loved ones were entombed in complete darkness and freezing temperatures for four days. Now it’s time to let the Titanic and the over 1500 souls aboard her that tragic night Rest In Peace,leave the wreckage and personal belongings of those who died a horrible death that night alone

@@davidgodwin8734 not really. This is pretty simple. This guy Stockton Rush designed this vessel and had it constructed of composite materials that should never have been used in the design. This vessel was not evaluated and certified by any regulatory agency. He took paying passengers down on a vessel that should never have deployed. There are no bodies to recover because in such a catastrophic implosion, those bodies would’ve been absolutely destroyed. If there were any body parts left, they are probably fish food by now.

@@rosejr2614We absolutely know they're dead. They're 2.4 Miles below the surface when that tiny sub imploded. The water pressure rushing in would have instantly killed them. Even if they somehow miraculously survived an implosion, nobody has the strength to withstand the pressure and weight of those depths (which is why there are now only 9 vessels capable of diving to those depths without being destroyed) and certainly can't hold their breath long enough to swim back up. Even if they had infinite breath, they could be attacked by wildlife or frozen to death from the water temperature.
@runninginsept

@@rosejr2614 A catastrophic implosion basically meant that the submersible exploded due to being crushed under the weight of all that water on top and around them. They would have died instantly and their bodies would have turned into mush. Sorry for being graphic but that's the kind of force we're talking about. Even IF anyone made it out of the submersible alive, they would have drowned before they could have reached air. The vehicle was diving for 1 hour 45 minutes to reach the position they were at when the incident occurred. Basically, there was 0% chance of survival.

@@kongthunder I'm not a nice guy, I'm a cool guy and a protector. And he shouldn't take my niceness for weakness. But thank you, even though he's the one that should be apologizing. Your cool in my book, but he needs to learn how to treat people like the way he would want to be treated.

If someone tells me we are going 12,500 feet deep, and the submersible we are using is good to 13,000 feet deep, I'm going to give the trip a miss. I would wait until we have a submersible vehicle which is good to 20,000 feet deep at least. Like I said before if you are betting your life on something one day you may lose, that's why I play poker at a nice warm casino; and when I look at the beautiful view from the top of a mountain. It's a mountain that I walked up and I can walk back down. May the taken souls RIP.

So sorry to hear this sad news. My condolences and heartfelt sympathy to the families. I feel so bad for the 19 year old college kid, he didn't want to go but went for his dad's sake. Rest in peace. 😞

Truly horrific and deeply sad for the families, friends and colleagues. But, overconfidence, arrogance, and not enough respect for the forces of Mother Nature are the foremost contributors to this horrific event.
