Not a VMWare/Microsoft problem. 99.9% of businesses run their servers/hypervisors on either VMWare or Microsoft, this was a social engineering attack.

@throatjamma all software they use is based on a yearly contract, and some are wrapped up in a service and complied in a database, that is what my brother-in-law did, was programmed the outside services to work with in house services… interfacing the databases and open certain vpns to certain companies, mind you my brother in law has not worked there since the pandemic so, not his fault lol

When these hacking incidents happens, they automatically blame the hackers,but it's is very rare that anyone actually stops to ask the real hard questions and ask if the company has a real good cyber defense ahd policies in place, did they have adequate patch management, intrusion detection and prevention systems, automatic feed updates for the latest threat intelligence, etc Did they do their best to reduce their threat surface areas, did they utilize the best technical, detective, administrative and management systems for each system, department and network segment? But jump all over and blame the hackers. The hackers can't hack, if they can't get in to begin with!! The management must eat part of the blame for the hackers attack which succeeded.

MGM Resort fault. I.T. is centralized, all the properties use the same I.T. help desk. And it's sourced out to an other country. Before the pandemic I.T. was at each property using its own network and servers. It will happen to other companys trying to cut and save.

It’s not that hard. Not a lot of people or countries have the money or resources to pull a stunt like this. So that narrows it down a lot. Then you can looks at how it was done or determine what tools the hackers used. Once they do that they can generally tell which entities are responsible because of their previous MOs. Not to mention back tracing IP addresses and sometimes the trace ends in a country where we have no jurisdiction so they don’t even hide their IP sometimes.

FYI to the untrained nontech people out there the original 3 reel slots only had a few hundred thousand payout permutations and combinations since each of the 3 or 4 reels had about 60 to 80 stop positions so the payout will be 60 x 60 x 60 combinations. But now with modern computers and the computers controlling the reels (or the display computer screens), the combinations are into trillions of times trillions times trillions. The payout is determined by the random number generator chip decides it is and not the random stopping of a reel. And the slots then went from 3 to 4 to 5 to now even 6 reels! plus just being a computer display with zero reels altogether.
