Latest update June 29,2015: Few days ago I received an email from DJI saying that they would be replacing the unit with a new one, As mentioned previously, my dealer stepped up to the plate and covered me so I didn't have to wait so they will receive my new Inspire 1. As to what was wrong - there is no explanation other than they're sending a new one. As I commented before, the unit looked unscathed other than a broken prop when it was sent in. For the time being, I have bought a Phantom 3 which has been working as it should and still want an I1 but not just yet after what happened. There is still no closure until I find out what happened but the hardest thing which I'm sure many of you that have had incidents that were no pilot error have experienced are all the skeptics thinking that its all some sort of conspiracy theory. Plain and simple regardless if you think it flew upside down or not. Just over 4 min unto the flight, the I1 complete lost all signal, app and RC (basically the I1 and the RC unbound to each other) and flew away until I assume the battery level got too low. At that point I'm assuming that it hot flipped somehow from the wind which you see on the video and the voltage was too low so the camera shut off and somewhere in between it righted itself and landed upright with some help from the props. Afterwards, the Inspire itself and the RC controller were still not bound and had NO communication and were sent directly to DJI. Will we ever know what happened? Maybe that's the conspiracy theory that the skeptics should be working on.

Jegorex Cosmetically, it looked unscathed. I don't know about internally. It landed smack in the middle of a persons new veggie garden with a big mound of top soil which must have broken its fall. One broken prop, battery ejected and dirty, and the camera was disconnected but the cable wasn't broken.

fwupow Total setup methinks. Everyday Reviews After flying to what looks like 2000 feet, Are you saying it fell to nearly the exact place it took off? Why did the cameraman on the ground not film it hitting the ground? why no shots of the damaged quad.Fake!

+Ian Hall Dude your a bonehead. It fell quite a bit farther away than where it took off if you watch the video. This popped up after it lost communication this has happened with DJI's stuff before as other videos prove. It ran out of juice and rotated then fell. End of story. You would have to be an ignorant dumbass to think otherwise or have never flown or built a copter.

I can't even begin to share with you the emotions that you go through when you you first see your $4000 investment flyaway out of sight. It's absolutely sickening - You want to cry, faint, and throw up all at the same time especially after a couple of minutes and no sign of it. Then you feel happy when you hear it coming down but then realize its a 6 lb brick falling from the sky and not slowing down. And, well you know the rest - Splat. I'm so scared now that this could happen to anyone anywhere.

Everyday Reviews dude i know how you felt. My Inspire suddenly went wacko on me and climbed 1500' next to an airport! I was shitting myself. I didn't know how that happened since I put a limit on it for 400'! It kept flying away on its own until I hit the return home button but that didn't work until I lost the signal. Then it stopped in mid air and came home. The gps showed that it was right above me but I couldn't see it. Then I saw it and it was just a speck in the air. I was scared and looked at the altitude and it said 1466' and right next to an airport! Thank God it came home and didn't crash or damage anything, but when it acted all crazy I just accepted the fact that I lost $3000. Fortunately I didn't.....wow!

Sorry for your loss. This event is yet another reminder to fly well clear of airports and flight paths. Even with the best intention of staying legal below 400ft a fly away like this can be very dangerous to air traffic in the area. You did a very good job of describing the event in your video - once the props stop many multicopters will flip over and fall inverted - that is pretty normal.

Just wanted to give everyone an update. Since the incident on May 24, the Inspire 1 was taken back to the dealer where it was shipped back to DJI LA where they will open it up and investigate etc. I have not heard back from DJI nor has the dealer on what has or hasn't been found. My dealer has stepped up to the plate and given me a full refund on their own recourse - kudos to Flying Cameras! I have since purchased a Phantom 3 which works like a dream but it is no Inspire 1 and will wait to see what DJI has found. I hope whatever conclusion they come to that they will be generous and share with the Inspire/UAV community on what happened and what can be done to prevent this from happening to others. I envy others that post amazing shots and films with their Inspires everyday thinking that could be me, but for now, I will wait a while before jumping back onto the Inspire horse.

Everyday Reviews Your dealer took care of you even though it probably meant they loss money here. That was nice of them even though it's not their fault. Unfortunately DJI will not take care of their clients like local companies do. I'm also a drone seller though I sell custom build machines. Accidents and stuff like this happens all the time in the world of UAS aircraft, no matter the brand or type. But what matters is support. Will the company that makes the machine offer you support if you have problems, or will they ignore you? DJI has the resources to support their clients, but often I read of cases where DJI has not stepped in, even though they have the resources. That's the bottom line, support. Best wishes in your aerial photography pursuits!

Providential Systems Drones 100% That is why I gave my dealer credit. I know that they took the initiative and handled this when it is out of their pocket which is why I intend them to give them more of my future business and hopefully make them even more than my initial purchase. I think it really is silly that certified dealers cannot handle their own warranty on a local basis.

Sorry to see your lost and thanks for posting your video. I have one theory for the inverted flight - It may be that when during the free fall, the gimbal failed causes only the camera to flip thus looking like it is flying upside down (I have a hand held gimbal that failed!) ... just a theory. It sounds like these drones have questionable reliability ... despite many good videos seen on the Internet - some actually flown over water, volcanos, etc. Thanks for posting again.

I have heard that this has been happening a lot with this model. DJI needs to recall those ASAP. I am a helicopter pilot and that crap terrifies me. If a rouge drone flies into my airspace like that I will not see it until it is too late and it could result in my life. Not to mention if on its descent it lands on somebody at hight speed. If they don't recall those faulty units it will end up costing them their company when something like that inevitably happens. #FAA

With DJI having so much work invested into their systems I am shocked they haven't added more robust fail safes. These flyaway's have GPS error and 2.4/5.8 band noise written all over them. Powerful wifi can jam out 2.4 and 5.8 and GPS is not without its quarks. My speculation is that when 2.4/5.8 drops the flight controller reverts to GPS altitude and GPS Lot/Lan for return to home position data, only there may be a bug in the feature or the GPS antenna lacks the gain necessary for strong altitude locks when dealing with noise. If you drop a satellite for example the asset is flying blind on altitude (I assume is dose not have a barometer, even if it did they have accuracy issues as well). Typically when GPS is dropped and third party guidance is lost most system revert to Inertia Navigation System (IE it uses the gyros and accelerometer) The issue is this requires a log of position data as well as accelerometer/gyro data and a lot of programming. I would say that DJI needs to add a ranging and signal to noise ratio measurement into the protocol and track GPS drift and compare the position data delta with acceleromter data to asses if GPS is getting wacky. It's also likely that they are using a single chip GPS solution with an RS232 or I2C interface and the information packet dose not include signal strength data or satellite count or they are ignoring that part of the packet. With that data they could have the flight controller just return to home using an estimated altitude and position generated from the accelerometer/gyro. Every one of these flyaways show a flaw in the guidance software where the flight controller had no idea it was getting bad information.

Right everybody! STOP using GPS for flying quads. LEARN TO FLY, LEARN MANUAL MODE FIRST!! When you eventually have that sussed, (which will take a long time) ONLY THEN, switch to GPS mode for all your videos and what not. For me GPS is just a small addition (but nice to have) mode, which helps with steadying the quad momentarily for scratching my arse or picking my nose. There are NO flyaways in manual mode.
@EverydayReviews2022
@EverydayReviews2022 9 жыл бұрын
paulkazjack I absolutely agree. The problem with all these drones are that they have made them too easy to fly so anyone and everyone and their dog are buying them without any type of rc knowledge whatsoever. I used to own and fly 600 size CP helicopters. There was no such thing as GPS or any type of firmware updates. No IMU or compasses to calibrate. Just simple yet very hard to fly compared to any of these types of UAV's. You could never take your fingers off the sticks for even a second to scratch your nose. I don't even find UAV's fun to fly compared to a real heli or my garage full of planes. They are mainly another tool for me. I only flew it in GPS because that's what the manual says to do and since I'm new to all this GPS stuff, i just followed the book.

I also had the displeasure of losing an inspire 1. Video went out as I was at 400ft so I started looking up expecting to see it hovering only to see a black thing falling from the sky. Suddenly realizing what just happened was so upsetting that I didn't fly any drones again for almost a year. Crashed into a solar panel on a house leaving a scare on the house and in my memory that this video just reminded me of. The wreckage still sits in it's case in the back of the garage. So sad!

Sympathy to you - I work on a quarry in the UK and the boss was really impressed with the photos from my DJI Phantom 3 Pro - He told me to go and get an Inspire 1 which I did - On its first flight on the 10th July I flew it out over the quarry and took it to about 120 metres high (the app said 121 m) flew for about 12 minutes then bought it back to near me and a colleague wanted a go on the remote (i was just using the one controller) It went haywire and crashed into a sand and gravel bank - Its not looking good now - carbon fibre shaft is shattered, gimbal is broken - I've had no such issues with the Phantom 3 - In fact I flew it afterwards on the same flight path with no issues. Dont buy one - Evidently DJI have admitted there is an IMU bug

+Mark Smith Thank you for the support Mark. It's pretty straight forward. All the calibrations were done to the exact spec, it was flying fine until about the 6min mark where it literally unbound itself to the controller. Switching to ATTI mode or anything else would have done nothing. I have flown model aircraft for almost 2 decades including large Trex 600 size helis and I guarantee you, anyone in this situation would be helpless. I am flattered by those who think that this is faked and CGI. I wish I was talented enough to do this. I did have the flight log for over 6 months and just recently took it down as I had placed the video on my daughters youtube channel as my viewers on this channel would not understand what it was. The log just showed regular flight with the highest altitude of 46 ft. At around the 6 min mark, the log ends. If this were fake, I don't think DJI would have replaced the aircraft. They were sent the aircraft and the log. Thanks again.

MrLivesteamer Trust me I know about the various tech cults...phantom/DJI being one. However this video looks suspect. Look at 6:25. The video glitches like it was artificially rotated. Also look at crash. The camera just stop tilting before the crash. Why track it so well then just stop? Also all the music and dramatic effect added...suspect for sure. I say this as an Iris+ owner. I got the Iris+ because I heard all the DJI horror stories...however. I'm currently grounded due to massive failure where Iris+ just stopped responding. So I'm objective as it gets. I don't like DJI and my 3DR screwed me....for the 3rd, 4th or who knows how many times. That being said...this video looks suspect.

I am just glad that nobody was injured and no one's property was damaged (aside from my $5000 drone). I sent it to DJI in California in early June and recieved an email from them saying it had been checked in on Jun 15 but haven't heard from them since. It seems the repair process for these is pretty long and sadly there seems to be many people having problems :(

Unfortunately for my mishap occurred 12 months after purchase, and the only thing damaged (the gimbal of course) was only covered for 6 months. i think a hacker saw you drone and pressed in his app connect to .... this drone can connect to two remotes You can do this if yo have remote and pesky neighbors fly and around and violate your privacy.. also a simple wifi jammer can cause serious problems in losing connect if you know how to use it btw i need that soundtrack 4:16

The problem, you need a powered attenna booster, to combat all the wifi signals from residential areas. I own 3 inspires 1's. Put a parachute on your bird, a $200 investment worth its weight in saves. "Never" fly without a attenna booster, a phone being used nearby, like your friends phone, can throw off the guidence. Same reason you dont use phones on planes; during take off or landing. Hope this helps you on your next bird. ;)

Have you considered the Yuneec q500+ 4K? I was planning to purchase the Phantom 3 Pro but I discovered that parts are hard to come by, and repairs require shipping. I thought about the Inspire but too expensive at this time. With the Yuneec model, parts are readily available, the store I buy it from does the warranty work and customer service is reported to be far better than DJI. Also, comes with two batteries, a case and hand held device to use the gimble camera. All for $1299 to $1500

Basically what happened here was that the altitude sensor failed. The only certainty about hardware is that eventually they will fail. Some early some late. No software could have saved this situation. According to the sensor the software always thought it was driving the motors to hold a constant altitude and had no clue that it was rising. Eventually the battery went low and it went to fail-safe landing and started descent, which was more rapid than what's usual with Inspire 1. Again because sensor was saying it's not losing altitude so the software the driving down the motors even further causing the rapid descent. But unfortunately even then it was too far up to reach ground before running out of battery. So in the end it ran out of battery and went into free fall. During the free fall the Inspire 1 got inverted and hence the inverted footage. There wasn't enough battery to fly or work the gimbal but there was still a bit left for the camera to keep recording, until even that ran out. Hence the abrupt end of footage before reaching ground.

Zaheed Sabur But what would cause it to unbind itself to the controller completely? That's the scary part. No atti mode or anything would work. It completely did not recognize the controller anymore, even afterwards. Basically all the safeguards built into this thing failed in my opinion.

that landing gear lowers just before power to the props shut down. How'd you retrieve the video? including close the file in process if you couldn't shut down the Inspire?
@EverydayReviews2022
@EverydayReviews2022 9 жыл бұрын
Sorry but I never said I couldn't power it down. The Inspire was off when I found it because the battery popped out. I then read on Google that if you have an incomplete recording to just power it back up and it should work. I connected the cables back up to the gimbal holder, inserted te card that I had taken out to try and retrieve the video, powered the Inspire without props on of course, waited 30 sec. Powered down and took the card to the computer. Voila, the file was playable as you see it here. The controller still does not communicate to the Inspire. Holy crap, feels like all I'm doing is trying to prove that this really happened. I have nothing against DJI, this is my first product from them, I can't say their support or service is bad yet because it's too early. I'm just sharing my terrible experience. Sorry, just frustrated.

Understand your frustration. I have a coupla question/comment. Question: How come the person filming the free-fall all started tilting the camera downwards (following the free-fall) and then stopped so you never see the aircraft crashing (or getting lost behind the trees or something) Question #2: I wonder from a legal standpoint if there is a way to protect yourself in case you should hurt a brain surgeon maybe purchasing the drone with a company check such as "I Fly Drones, LLC." just like your car which, if owned and titled by a corporation should you get into a wreck where someone gets hurt they are going to go against the company (and maybe not you..?) Humm... thinking out loud here but I guess I answered my own question #2
@EverydayReviews2022

Person filming didn't have his phone out or glasses on. Amazing he got what he did. Afterwards I asked "did you get it" he wasn't even sure. On playback, he still couldn't see the drone. After about a min into the the flight, I actually told him that's enough as all the flyaways I had read about mostly happened at take off.

@GG-jz6lw
@GG-jz6lw 9 жыл бұрын
Fake! 1) Zoom in during inversion to hide away the aspect-ratio missmatching 2) Impossible horizont distortion during rotation. First I just wanted to calculate the insane angular speed and acceleration this would require, before realizing that the distortion itself does not match the rotation. 3) The Inspire does not loose altitude after the inversion which would require inversion of the motors rotation as well
@EverydayReviews2022
@EverydayReviews2022 9 жыл бұрын
I can send you the original file from the camera if you'd like. There is no zooming in but believe what you want. DJI has the original card but I still have the raw file.
@GG-jz6lw
@GG-jz6lw 9 жыл бұрын
Believe is for religions, knowledge and facts are what counts here: The zoom in is exactely at frame 00:06:20.01. There is no transition from the previous frame to this one without zooming/distortion (I agree there ois not only zooming but distortion) . In this frame thecenter part of the frame (the river) makes a rotation of about 40° which would be 1200°/sec. If this would be the drone the whole picture would rotate this amount, but the rotation of the top of the clouds is not noticeable at all. It is well seen that the clouds are streched towards the bottom right in that frame. As a result the whoile frame appears to rotate but no new picture elements (i.e. clouds) enter the picture on the top right as it should as a result of the rotation. This is most probably to compensate the aspect ratio during the rotation to avoid empty corners. But the reason is not important, fact is that this frame cannot have been recorded like that. Even DJI Cameras have to follow optical rules.

Props and engines intact. Landed right side up in a garden with loose too soil. That must have saved it.
