I don't think the point is a more consistent pay schedule, I think this is just another way for them to get people to take trash orders
@CwBDaveis.716
@CwBDaveis.716 Жыл бұрын
Ddash doesn't care about their drivers or their customers. They are completely happy with rejects taking 10 orders and quitting, and then another one, and then another one, etc.---they make their money.
@bijou3000
@bijou3000 Жыл бұрын
I think it's even more cynical than clearing the trash orders. I think it's because they wanted to avoid the Labor Department from legislating that they have to match the minimum wage in every state. By offering drivers the choice of a slightly-higher-than minimum wage hourly rate for active dash time, or the ability to take their chances by the order, they can say, "See? We're not violating the Fair Labor Act because we still offer independent contractors the choice to take an hourly flat wage if they want it." It's not a bad solution for DD, because they're not paying by the actual hour on the clock, they're paying by each hour you accumulate while you're on an active order. Most people would rather choose to be paid by the hour than spend two hours taking high-mile, no-tip clowns, but at least DD can say they offered their independent contractors a choice.

@bijou3000

@Bro Jackson Yeah, that's a big part of it. A lot of orders get declined because they're too many miles for the lunch or dinner rush. If you already live in a rural area or food desert, it might work out well, but if your earnings usually beat the hourly wage on your own, it doesn't make sense. In my state, the DD hourly is just over $10. I can do that in one delivery, so driving all over hell with someone's old food they didn't tip on DD's hourly wage is just a bad math option that doesn't work for me.

One thing you're missing, though, is that when you do by order, you get to choose who you do business with. You select clients (both restaurant and customer) based on your own preferences. When you do pay by hour, you are forced to go to restaurants you don't like and deliver to customers that don't tip. I can almost guarantee that doordash will send all the no tip orders to pay by time dashers.

I’ve been using the earn by time option in my area (state college PA, home to Penn State) since last October. Two good and bad things I noticed about the program: Bad: 1. You do tend to get the garbage orders with very little or no tipping often. This isn’t guaranteed but the tips are a lot more when I earn per order. 2. You do have to just accept whatever restaurants they give you. Good: Having earn by time is incredibly helpful during rush hour as I don’t have to worry about time spent in traffic. 2. Your acceptance rate will increase significantly since you’re accepting almost every order. This gives you high priority for high paying orders when you do choose to earn per order. Disclaimer: My area has $15 an hour as part of the program so my data is based on this

I think the hourly pay should be applied to dash time instead of active time to compensate for slower times and smaller markets, with a cap on the number of dashers on the road and no declining of orders. They also really need to upgrade the app to prioritize assigning orders closer back to your start location at the end of your dash, which the uber app is able to do so I don't see why doordash can't I don't know how many times doordash has attempted to send me 10+ miles away from my zone at the very end of my dash, as if on purpose

I dashed hourly today for the first time. The hourly pay in my state is $15.25. I live in the northern suburbs of Minneapolis, and I was frustrated with several fast food places not being fast at all, and several orders taking me far away to the middle of nowhere for minimal tips. I would need to work lunch 11-2 and dinner from 5pm to at least 11pm to make $150. That's 9 hours, and I was hustling for that money while being extremely frustrated. Btw, I HATE RED LIGHTS. Today, I made 16 deliveries. The dash time was 5h 57m, active time was 4h 52m, DoorDash pay was $75.30 and customer tip was $46.83. Total: $122.13. Zero orders were declined. I need to add that today is the first day of dashing where I was relaxed for the entire shift. No need to hustle or be worried about not getting paid while waiting for orders because I was on the clock getting paid no matter what kind of crap was thrown at me. I'm going to use the hourly rate for the rest of the week just to see if that's the way to work this gig in my area. Thanks for making this channel. You're doing a great service to the DD community.

I dash in the Knoxvillle, TN area and tried the Dash by Time option to see how it would turn out. I typically do 3 hrs at a time because of kids and school stuff. First 2 hours I made roughly the same I usually do (16-18 / hr), then the last hour they slammed me with a 3-stack that took up most of that hour, and not a single tip. One the official payout was $0.81. So I made like $8 that hour because of Active vs Dash time, and our base here is $10. Never doing pay by time again.

@GR8APE69
@GR8APE69 Жыл бұрын
Yup. They do NOT pay you hourly for each order in a stacked order individually either. They pay you a single lump sum based on the time from when you accept the first order to when you drop off the last order. And considering how they push the no tip orders on to their hourly paid dashers, you can end up with stacked orders where the first one pays you $6 or $7 and the second one pays you $1 or $2. They use it to screw their drivers.

First, thanks for all the tips and tricks. We all appreciate it! Now to my experience. I remember something like this rolled out here in CA a few years back to comply with min. Wage policies. And I thought it was a good policy to employ...until I was denied it. Was dashing during the 2020 Superbowl and was stuck waiting at a buffalo wild wings (notorious in my area for taking a long time) but pay was good so I took the order). The huge crowd outside (which I later found out we're fellow dashers) should've been the red flag but I already accepted the order and I thought to myself "I'll be compensated for the time because of the new policy." I wasted about 5-6 hours waiting for orders, even going out, delivering and coming back because they (bbw) were taking their sweet time pushing the orders out. When I finally finished the shift and delivered all the orders, I was shocked to see that I wasnt compensated for the active time I spent waiting for the order(s). When I called to confront DD. They gave me the run around (as usual). Passing me around until they just hung up on me. This happened multiple times. Even when I read their own fine print to them. It was really frustrating and aggravating. Anyways, I just wanted to share my experience with this type of policy and what happened when I tried to confront them about them. Maybe it's just me (doubt it though). Thanks again for all you do!

If you want to make the per hour pay work in your favor do it in the mornings when it's slow to make your gas money at least for the rest of your day because typically mornings are very slow but if you have that hourly rate you can make let's say a decent amount to cover your day expenses when it's busy later. Just a thought if you're a morning person

If you work late at night, the time pay works well because at least in Tulsa, Oklahoma, you get a lot of apartment orders which requires a lot of time looking for the right apartment or having to walk up stairs to get to it and everything is closed so you are limited to restaurants who are open but only the drive through. You are sitting in line at the drive through. So for that, the time pay is perfect.

Every point you made was excellent. I tried it myself and here are my observations. $8 per hour is not enough. We use gas, we have vehicles to maintain. Its simply not enough. But heres where I understand the program. If you want to dash in areas that have really bad traffic, then this program is a safeguard for those situations that make orders take longer. Traffic, slow restaurants, etc. Where Im at, is a shopping strip connected to two major highways. My orders tend to have longer distances. Thats just how it is for me. But I can get around fairly quick as long as traffic isnt horrendous. This program could be okay during that 4-6 o'clock chaos here. I usually dont dash at those hours because of traffic. Which tends to make the dash efficiency less because of those factors.

Your case studies aren't really comparable. You choose to take orders with significant tips which isn't what you'll be able to do with earn by time, and you turn down orders regularly so if you can't really turn down orders you might have more active time. You'd have to do a few hours in your market to actually see what's you make, but I'm thinking your case studies are actually very generous on what earn by time end pay would be in your market.

I just started dashing. So the hourly program has given me a sort of safety net while I learn and sort things out. For you guys that have been doing it a while, maybe it makes sense to ignore earn by the hour. But for new people it works as a set of training wheels while you work toward your top dasher status and get things sorted out. And a fall back while you train the app what kind of orders you're looking for.

I agree with you. To make this better for me is to see the miles and pay like I did before the program. It’s difficult to make the decision to decline without seeing this. I could be driving 15 miles away for low pay and then have to drive back towards my dash area and use up half of my hour and my only compensation is $4 for half my hour. So I decline twice right away just to be done with it.

Something to keep in mind: you have a built in knowledge of what orders to accept and what to decline. It appears to me that a dasher who knows the best restaurants to work with and what delivery areas to avoid can make more by being selective vs the pay by hour aspect. However, I would also like to think that the pay by hour works if you are trying to work non peak hours like 8am-11am (after the breakfast haul, before the lunch rush) or anytime after the typical dinner orders.

The thing is that these aren’t equal comparisons because you chose what orders you’d accept and what tips you expected, including hidden tips. So now we have to accept orders that aren’t even going to pay us tips that we’d normally reject. So to make a fair comparison, you’d have to show past orders vs current orders under this new program. That’s where you’re going to see the difference monetarily. I look forward to your future videos.

What I wrote about this elsewhere: I like it in the sense that it’s flexible enough to cover several scenarios in which extra time can be a factor - wait time in restaurants, extra traffic on the road, extra distance (within reason) that I might otherwise decline. So I think it’s a helpful way to structure pay. But, as you say here, a lot depends on the amount offered per active hour. I like to translate it into base pay per order, with a few different common amts of time an order may take - from acceptance through delivery. It’s not exact (an order could take 17 minutes instead of 15 or 20, for example), but it gives me a pretty good approximation. For example (and for this, I like to use an hourly rate easily divisible by 6, 4, 3, and 2), I’ll start with $12 per active hour. That would translate into base pay as follows: 10 minutes (12/6) - $2 15 minutes (12/4) - $3 20 minutes (12/3) - $4 30 minutes (12/2) - $6 And beyond 30 minutes, I add appropriate segments above together. $18 per active hour would look like this (translated into base pay per common amts of time per order): 10 minutes (12/6) - $3 15 minutes (12/4) - $4.50 20 minutes (12/3) - $6 30 minutes (12/2) - $9 Just as a couple of examples. As the active hourly pay goes up, it translates into more reasonable base pay. And, as the active hourly pay goes down, it translates into less reasonable base pay. “Reasonable” would depend on a driver’s market. How long are your typical deliveries? How many deliveries are typical for a shift? What’s the tipping like? ~~~~~~~~~ My market started out about 3 months ago at $10 per active hour. I paid little attention to it. About a month later, it went up to $15.25 per hour. (So keep an eye out for changes; they seem to be experimenting with hourly rate in various markets.) My typical delivery in this area, which is fairly spread out, is about 20 minutes per delivery. At $15.25, I think of it as giving me a backstop of a bit more than $5 in base pay (for a typical delivery). And at times, particularly during slower times or when I may be concentrating on getting my AR up, I find that useful. Also, unlike what some others have mentioned, in my market, I’ve been surprised to find that the majority of orders still add a tip; not always, and sometimes, the tip is low - $1 or $2 - but the majority of orders for me do include a tip. So less than I would have expected are no-tip orders, at least in my market. I also like the flexibility of being able to go back and forth between “earn by order” and “earn by time.” ~~~~~~~~ But I think it all depends on how high (or low) the active hourly rate is. I think it will have to be significantly higher than it currently is in most markets to be taken seriously by most drivers.

This isn't in my market and I don't think it would work in my area, either. I live in a rural area where the majority of the restaurants are clustered in about a 3 mile radius. The houses, however, can either be in that radius or as far flung as 10 to 15 miles. Sure, active time pays for the drive to the customer but the drive back is unpaid, and I'd more than likely not get another order until I'm about 2 miles within that radius cluster. And they would absolutely shunt the no-tip orders to this program. I'm not getting paid base just to go 15 miles there and 15 miles back.

Well considering in Michigan it's $4 an hour plus tips for tipped wage earners. That would be awesome considering there are times that we sit around waiting for jobs to pop up. At least while you're waiting for a job to pop up you're getting paid by the hour you're getting something for the time that you are putting on the line for someone's viddles. As for the peak pay issue, I think that it's a good incentive to bring people on on shifts. They tend to do that a lot here in Michigan with areas that have shifts that aren't being covered.

Good video however the results are all flawed! Your normal dash amt will be way higher than the 5-7$ less you'd make on the hourly. That’s my experience so far. :) I ain’t gunna dissuade them in the slightest :) We don’t chase stats, but over the last 3 days, we’ve gone from 41% to 66% AR due to the hourly drivers descending on our area like locusts and taking out the $3.25 for 20 mile offers. They seem to like what they’re doing :) The longer they’re active, the more they get paid. :)

My market is about 200 thousand people. But we’re pretty spread out so you can easily drive a long distance. Here by the hour is $10 per hour and you can turn down 2 orders per hour. I’ve tried both by order and by hour. Most of the time by the hour wins. Sometimes it’s very close. I’ve gone back to my old dashes and looked too. Paid $10 for my active hours my by the order dashes, I lost about $2 an hour. The other thing that happens in by the hour is I seem to have less down time. Practically always busy. Do I get trash orders that show $3-4? I do but they either actually tip or put me near a hot spot. I’ll keep doing by the hour 100% on days I know I’ll be waiting a long time at restaurants like during bowl season and the NFL playoffs.
