I've been dashing for 3 years now and have over 10,000 deliveries and learned a lot from this man when I first started and still get good information to this day. What I want to say about no tip orders is that you know when you accept the order that there is no tip on it and the possibility of a cash tip is very slim. So if you accept it, you are the only one to blame. Stop blaming the customer for your stupid decisions. Just decline and wait for a better order.

Except now there’s a minimum acceptance rate you have to maintain, or you don’t receive high paying orders. They’ve put an end to cherry picking. This started in my market last may and I haven’t dashed since it was implemented.

B , the DD ai is programmable in terms of consistency in feedback . Wall Street knows all about the DD and Uber ai , they've studied us for a while now as we've studied them so they absolutely know what I won't take and what I might take if it's logistically good for me ,wow 😲 that's right I optimize those parameters and stay above %75 it knows I won't be played against a number and thats kept the orders popping and paying noticably better

Very interesting video. I've only been doing this for months and I was already thinking the same things. When I first started dashing I was subscribing to many content creators trying to learn and pick up tips. I soon learned I was actually losing money trying to follow someone else guidelines. In my market we get a lot of 4 to 6 dollar orders at only 1 or 2 miles and they come in fast too. The restaurants are not to bad on the speed and I can easily make 20 dollars an hour with these little orders. Many of them don't have tips or very small tips, but I'm still making money, so I could care less about the tips. So I agree with you there. I have since unsubscribed from some of the negative content creators, but I think many of the negative ones are not really trying to help anyone, they just post content for the clicks and views. In other words they are just using the negative topic to make money from KZbin. As far as the negativity, some of them criticize other drivers calling them names and what not. If 2 people are doing the same job and both of them are satisfied with the money they make, why would one of them post a video calling the other a clown, just because they are doing it differently? It actually makes no sense to me.

As a driver for a national pizza chain I get the no tip thing really well. However, I do get a lot of cash tips. There are two reasons I have found that people do this. First, about a third of cash tippers believe we have to give a percentage of our tips to the company. And second, the rest tip cash so we don't have to claim the money on our taxes.

I’m an older woman trying to make ends meet by dashing while retired. This is the perfect job for me and I am always nice and accommodating with my customers. I will climb several floors of stairs, upon request enter the handicapped persons home to deliver to their hands their order as well as packages delivered to their porch which they can’t reach. I remember being a new mom without the ability to leave the house to shop and without the budget to tip. There are lots of reasons why people don’t or can’t tip. What goes around comes around. You can’t expect people to be grateful if you are rude, and people learn by experience and example- set the example. Generate positive energy and you’ll get positive results. Thanks for this vid!

@@iatealready5544 if you are meeting your dollar per mile goal, you aren't accepting low ball orders. Clearly this gig is not for you because it involves you having to understand math and opportunity costs. If you spend an hour waiting for the 12 dollar order and end up not getting it or getting only an eight dollar order or get get kicked off for getting nothing, you would have made more accepting three 4-5 dollar orders in that same hour. The job involves more business knowledge than you goobers think. It's all about total money made per shift divided by time and minus cost of gas for miles. If you aren't making more per hour than you would flipping burgers, you're the the clown. That's also keeping it simple and not accounting for depreciation on your vehicle or taxes.

I'm new to dashing but I've been in customer service since 2009. I have so much respect for you and this video. At the end of the day it's the customer that suffers. If door dash doesn't pay us enough, it's not the customers fault. They're using the app and already paying an extra charge for the convenience of doing so. This is true, but it doesn’t mean that a lot of us can afford to just be nice all day. On Christmas I took a new tip order because it was going like half a mile from the bagel store near my house, and I was just setting out. I didn’t expect anything when I got there. Although on holidays, you do sometimes help but I never get my hopes up so it was a leave at the door, but he actually open the door, took it, for my hands couldn’t crack a smile and closed the door. Since I had to hit “handed to customer” as it was no longer there to take a picture and it happened so fast, I guess I’m just lucky he didn’t say he never got his food. He may have a good reason to be sad on Christmas. Don’t get me wrong. (it’s not even my holiday.) but a smile wouldn’t kill him as a tip if nothing else. Also, which I didn’t expect it was a huge house. Again, we don’t know he could’ve been dog sitting, although it didn’t look like that. But like I said, attitude, makes all the difference. I went from feeling like I was doing something nice to just feeling like I was treated like crap.

Having worked in the restaurant industry for 20 years plus, not getting a tip 100% of the time, is part of the business. You'll get used to it. But I also learned that if I continue providing a great service, when it's all said and done I am usually more up then I'm down. I've only been driving doordash for about a month and noticed that a tip is really just icing on the cake because most of the money I make comes from the base pay. Getting a tip on top of that like I said is icing on the cake and I really don't expect it. I think not expecting it to makes it easier not getting one LOL. At this point in my life I am simply grateful to be able to do this job

There is no such thing as a customer who cannot afford to tip after paying to have someone bring them food. If they are in that tight of a financial budget, they need to make better economic decisions for themselves. In that same way, it's why drivers should simply not accept those orders and move on without getting all irate about it because it doesn't make good financial sense to work for free after paying vehicle expenses. I be pissed feeling I tipped them good for them to be careless n not care enough to make sure I got da correct order to the correct person. So yes I tip based on how they deliver .Doordash needs to give the option where you can tip after da delivery is done

I have noticed a difference, absolutely. 🖐🏻 I feel like a lot of newer Dashers lack work ethic. Over the last year, I have come across stolen orders (Showing up to pick up an order to find out another dasher took it.) 5 times over the last year. It never happened before. I have seen newer Dashers say they don't feel like they should show any customer service, which blows my mind. I have seen them raz people who try hard to do a good job... These absolutely are the people making people like us lose out. They're pulling us down. I feel it's time that Door Dash as well as other apps raise their standards for who they allow to use the platform.

I think there are more very low/no tippers now. After DD offered $1800 to refer a friend, DD had an overabundance of new, naive delivery drivers. I saw many offers that used to be decent or even excellent now way below doable. Instead of customers learning what to pay,, drivers are driving their cars to the ground. It was much better pay when a good percentage of drivers stock together. I think it (no tip no trip) will come back in some form because a lot of people are going to pay bare minimum, and that is not going to work for anyone.

If you’ve done at least a few hundred deliveries, you can tell what kind of orders have no tips. Restaurant/delivery location etc, not to mention item count and the upfront amount. Just stop taking them. If someone uses a delivery app and doesn’t tip, they’re trash. Don’t interact with them any more than you need to (hitting the decline button) … your acceptance rate won’t get you kicked off. Sometimes if it’s slow I’ll take the McDonald’s order for $3.75/2mi but I already know what it is, going in. I know how much I make on avg per hour and that I’ll make it up later. Don’t get mad, just say to yourself in your car “damn I’m glad I’m not stupid enough to think that ordering delivery and not tipping is ok” and move on.

A 4.99, 100% completion rate. And a 91% on time rate or early rate. With 700 deliveries total. I treat the $0 no tipper the exact same as I would treat a $50 tipper. They are the customer. Customer is the #1 thing that's needs to be happy. Happy customer = happy job. Happy life. Secure job. I am a top dasher and when I see other dashers being so dumb and negative with the no tip no trip or eating and all this other crap, it really urks me because it sucks to know that the way the bad people make doordash look affects the way us actually good dashers a bad view and perception of us.

@@Kekanonypepefrog You know what really irks me. I recently saw a TikTok video where random people get free food by going into random restaurants and holding up their phones and saying doordash and they just get handed a bag of food and off they go. I remember I was so puzzled when I accepted an order and went into the restaurant and the person said the order was picked up like 15 minutes prior to my arrival. Never occurred to me that some people just do it to get free food. I've noticed more and more now when I go and get an order the person asks to actually see my phone to make sure I'm actually a dasher. It's such a shame because these people(who obviously WILL get a refund will be reluctant to use the app again because their food never made it to them). It also stinks for those of us who dash because we only get paid for half of what the order originally said when we accepted it and drove to the restaurant only to get turned away. Of course then you have to contact support to make sure they put in for you to get half of the actual pay than what you originally accepted.

The problem is "Door Dash" or whatever delivery service you work with..... they are stealing all the profits 📈 by charging the customer $20+ on a $8 order.... so me as a consumer.... looking at the $28 for a $8.00 burger, I'm more then likely going to give $2 max tip to round the $28 to $30. I am definitely not willing to pay more for that $8.00 burger. $30 for a burger 🍔 is way too high. We pay; Delivery fee Service fee Taxes Tip The driver service app don't pay for anything; drivers make the money and the consumer pays for everything else. While the driver apps rack in major profits. Here in California (the consumer) pay for the driver's medical benefit fund. So why give a tip? The problem is the greedy driver app, not the consumer

Next would be Cincinnati, it stays fairly busy, but in the winter, good luck, icy roads! Portland, which I'm currently driving, has been treating me well. It stays consistently busy, with a good haul of money within a five hour shift. Downfalls, traffic can be bad, depending on the location and time, gas is pretty high. Nashville, Tennessee would land number one on my list due to the amount of money I'd make in such a short amount of time. Traffic? Yes, but it's consistent orders, plus it's a fun city! All these cities have a special place in my heart, though, and time spent should be experienced by everyone. Drive safely ladies and gentlemen!

They say $1-2 per mile so you live 3 miles from the restaurant, about $6 depending where you live. Also if there's a chance for an order on the return trip(if there's no restaurants around you they'll have to drive 3 miles back to where the orders are etc.) Also depends on the restaurant, here that's decent for a quick order but at the same time for a taco bell order where you have to sit in a drive through for 20mins because the dining room is closed, it wouldn't be worth taking.

The simple reality is you don't have to accept the order. I know my limits and I stick to them. If it ain't at least $7 and up I ain't touching it even if its literally across the street but that doesn't mean I hate the people. If I don't make at least $20 an hour I don't get mad at the customers I get mad at doordash. People forget that doordash upcharges items and adds on tons of fees just for the delivery. A simple $11 order from panda express turns into $20 after taxes and doordash fees even before the tip. That's an extra $9 just for ordering through doordash. Now you add on let's say a $5 tip and it's $14 extra dollars which is over double the price of the meal originally. People are pointing the finger in the wrong direction. Imagine if doordash wasn't so agressive with the fees then customers would have more to tip.

I have been dashing a little over a year now, as a 'side hustle'. I am retired, 77 yo, and have had significant previous experience in management, training, recruiting, sales, etc. I wanted a way to supplement my retirement that wasn't stressful and was reasonably rewarding. Doordash has been a terrific experience for me. I regard the occasional tipless dash as a way to pay it forward. I treat those customers the same as I would treat someone who gives me a great tip. We do not know the circumstance of their lives. Often that type of delivery is to someone who doesn't have a car, who is elderly (more than me!) , who seems to be down on their luck. For the most part, I feel that I am tipped well. Why would I not be kind to someone who had a need that I can easily fulfill, who could not afford to both get that meal and tip me It is my chance to brighten someone's day, to spread a little love. If the customer is someone who doesn't seem to be in need financially: if they do not tip, maybe treating them with kindness can help enlighten them, help them change their attitude, give them a little sunshine in their life. Treat others the way you would like to be treated. No exceptions. I appreciate you, Bentley! Thanks for being you!

Heres the thing, if these dashers want to complain about not getting tips, then go get a job being a server in the service industry first, be on your feet going back and forth for 8+ hours, THEN complain if you feel your total tip take isn't sufficient. Dashers need to stop thinking that the CUSTOMER is responsible for paying their wages. If you cannot live with the base pay, then you're working at the wrong place. Tips are a bonus, a showing of being thankful for GREAT SERVICE. You don't deserve a tip just because you showed up. This comes from someone with experience as a server, as a customer ordering deliveries and as a delivery driver (yes I've delivered orders with no tip, yes, it sucked, no i didnt get all worked up about it. )

The no tip, no trip, and eating the customer's food is basically why I no longer use Doordash. They get no money from me anymore after all these antics. Especially the eating the customer's food because they didn't like the tip. To me, that's theft, and they should be prosecuted for said theft when they post it online for all to see. If Doordash isn't paying you enough to take orders to customers, that's Doordash's problem to fix. I'm NOT required to put a 100% tip on a 10 dollar order to make you, the driver, happy. That expectation means that Doordash and their drivers get NO money from me. Ever. EDIT: I wrote this at the start, but, you actually completely covered this. This is actually what THIS customer thinks about all this crap. If the company won't put a stop to this, then I won't use Doordash. And I don't. To be clear, when I was using the app, I did always give a 20% tip on any order. If that's not enough tip, that's Doordash's problem, not mine.

Guilty! But my reason for asking about the tip was because when I handed the food to the customer, she mentioned that she always adds a 20% tip to her order and if I didn’t get it, to ask the merchant about it. The merchant said, “no tip was added”, when I went back to let her know that the tip didn’t go through, which would have been $60, she called her boss to come speak to me about it and after I felt totally humiliated, he came back with 5 dollars. I will never do that again. Now, I just thank everyone for their tips and don’t take $5 or less if it’s over 5 miles unless I know I’ll probably get orders where I’m going. This is a good topic. I've worked for tips in the service industry for years in both high-end service and dives. If a server gets beat in a fine dining restaurant, a savvy manager will intercede on the server's behalf and always with a variation of, "How was the service? We do not add on a service fee like some places," etc., in order to recover the server's lost wages. That's an exception in a specialized environment. In higher-end places, tables turn at a slower pace and servers are waiting on far fewer people. If a 4-top "forgets" to tip, that could financially wreck a server's/ team servers' night. A Dasher confronting a customer over a tip? That's a knucklehead's move. The day and age in which we're living, to say that a Dasher is taking their life in their hands by behaving that way is no exaggeration at all. Also, with confrontation videos getting play, some drivers are thinking on the social media exposure that they may receive. Either way, there are so many ways for a scenario like that to go bad and end up on the evening news. Anyway, my car does not move for less than $2 a mile and that's it, no arguments. I'll decline and decline until that criteria is met all day every day. $2 per mile and keep it moving. The only exception I can think of would be a high item count order from a pricey restaurant. Finally, I care about what I can control on my end. My ride is clean inside and out, I have a large, insulated catering bag to keep food warm and I follow customer instructions-- "don't ring bell," etc. Our customers are paying good money for this service and I can handle my end. Thanks for another thought-provoking video, Bentley. Happy New Year to you and your people.

I love this video, life lessons and growth. Doordash has definitely tested me. I am full time student with a full time job, full time mom, part time job, and door dash. Sometimes I am overwhelmed. Its not fair for me take it out on a no tipper. Sometimes I am glad to help. I can’t tell you how many times my account was in negatives. Times are hard. Every one needs to eat, not everyone has transportation. That being said. I actually do very well on tips, I pick good orders and expect one or two low ones to sneak it.

What's ridiculous to me as a customer who has worked in service jobs before (but not delivery), is for most of my life a tip was something you gave after the service was performed. While it was considered in poor taste not to tip or to tip below 15%, it might happen on occasion if the service was really bad. Alternatively, really great service warranted a better tip. In the early days of food delivery apps, I always waited until after the delivery to decide on a tip, because if my order arrived very quickly or my driver went out of their way for me then I would want to tip more. I had to change this practice after a driver once picked up our food and didn't deliver it because we hadn't tipped yet. I don't understand where this expectation came from that customers should tip drivers prior to the service being given. I agree that tipped wage workers don't get paid enough, but I disagree that they should take a certain percentage of tips for granted. When employees and customers continue to escalate all of this among themselves, the only winner is the company that gets away with underpaying the driver and simultaneously overcharging the customer. It's time we refocused our energy into holding Doordash accountable because as you said no one is talking about their mistreatment of drivers any more but clearly there are still problems in their business model.

Thank you for this. Your perspective and recommendations are much appreciated and you are well spoken. As a customer I will admit I have stopped using delivery service companies altogether. It is not just the tipping issue, but the service charges. Then there is the government taxes. I work in an office where it's difficult to stop for lunch. I tried ordering takeout delivery for a while but I gave up because a $10.00 meal was costing me more than double that. I do not take issue with the drivers but with the business model as a whole. With all the extra fees it's just too expensive. I cannot help but feel that this tipping culture has gotten way out of control. I just can't afford to tip for every single service I encounter in a day. I feel uncomfortable dealing with a situation where the poor tippers are being blamed for a situation that has been created by the employers who don't pay proper livable wages in the first place. The employers are where any anger or efforts to change should be directed, not the people who can barely afford the meal let alone the all the extra charges. We all are doing our best to pay our bills and get by. Sometimes it seems that the people expecting a large tip may not take into account that not everyone has a lot of extra cash to be a good tipper. I do understand that the service industry wages rely on tipping so it's easier for me to just avoid relying on the service in the first place. Unfortunately in this case nobody wins.

Sometimes it makes perfect sense to take a no tip order, either it's really close, taking you somewhere you want to go anyway, you know it's from a place that's gonna be really fast.... the stars have to align but no tip orders can be just as good as any other order in some cases

And drivers accepting them is the ONLY reason they continue to place cheapskate orders. If it was a restaurant, they'd be staying home & making their own sandwich because they are too broke to pay their server/waitress. We wouldn't be encouraging waitstaff to wait on a table with no tip... even if it's a small table, or during a non-lunch/dinner rush. Ect

Hi Bentley! I have a serious question for you, doordash knock me out of the platinum program because of something they did and will not fix it. I've been a top dasher since I started with doordash. I was in all the programs, platinum, large or and catering, top dasher, but they messed my completion rate up. 1% and they knock me out for unassigned from a order when the restaurant was super busy and out of meat. The restaurant said it would be a wait and this was a second order they gave me after the fact. So I unassigned from in my other order had already been sitting a while. How do I get help from them to fix it! They even told me over the phone, "oh yes you've been a top dasher since you've been with us", but still will not help me. How do I fix this.

My philosophy is that "I'm running a business, not a charity". If you can't afford to tip the driver, call Meals and Wheels or some other charity. However, I don't feel any angry or hatred towards these folks, I just think that they need to order food from someone else. I understand that money is tight for some people, and they have to pay all these delivery fees, etc. But again, "I'm running a business, not a charity".

I don't think cherry picking is damaging DD, I think it's the multi orders, I've seen drivers taking up to 3 orders with 3 different phones, I mean, I wouldn't want my food to be delivered late and cold. I know it's hard to make money not multi-apping but that's why I cherry pick, I rarely take double orders.

You and Mr.Beatonyou are the only 2 dashers I watch regularly, cause I like y'all spreading positivity and not just complaining about customers like a lot of newer dasher/vloggers. Tired of the negativity myself in our community (for lack of a better word) that I see more of recently and I want to try and be a good dasher, be professional with customers no matter what and just do better to be a kinder person in general. Always had anger problems, controlling my temper was always hard til I started working on it a few years ago, and for 2023 (even tho I hate making them) I made one resolution that my goal for this year was to be kind to people no matter what. I think all dashers reading this should work on being more kind in general and we need to support each other, not argue about how to make our money or harass customers. Every order I take, even if it's some 2 dollar order on a stack, I'm still going to be on time, be quick, and deliver as professionally as I can. Just like you said was something I thought about earlier, I thought "what if I just give good service to someone who tipped low, then the next time, they'll tip more to their dasher" not ridiculous to consider.

This message is for my fellow Dashers. Wondering if there's a strategy to get higher fares. This is my 5th day as a Dasher. I'm noticing the app is lying to me. Before I hit the Dash Now button, it shows me a huge area in red and says "Busy". Then I click the button, and it shows me a MUCH SMALLER area AND it offers me very small $5 orders (that makes me deliver MILES outside the zone, then I have to drive back). My acceptance rate is 71%. The time of day is between 6:30 pm and 9:30 pm in San Antonio, TX. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

In my market, Doordash doesn't let me know if there is a tip until after the order is completed. I then get to Doordash Pay and Customer tip... I end my average day with a few no tip orders that I wouldn't take if I knew that they didn't tip... I would never confront a No Tip Customer but I sure pray that their order gives them the worst gas that they've ever had!
