Maybe you should look into grass seeds or grass that thrives in shade. I have "natrual wild strawberry ground cover," in my completely shaded backyard. I didn't plant it, it was here when I moved in. It is beautiful and always green, year round and I live in the northeast. Also when you planting, do you "split" the base of the "new plants" before you set them in the soil. If not, that's why your plants and not thriving; they are "stuck" with growing inside the container they were in. Always "split" plants when you remove them from the pots purchased in.

We tried rubber mulch too and it’s a no for me. Regular mulch helps nourish the soil. Next season, try hostas in the circle as your perennial. They perform best in shade. Then you can add pretty annuals to give the circle some color. Best wishes.

This. Hydrangeas are my favorite but they cost so much money and she killed that bush with even that little bit of paint. 😭 The color of your hydrangeas is completely dependent upon the acidity in your soil. Raise or lower and pH of the soil for a different color flower.

If your mulch is coming out of the barrier, it’s not deep/low enough. The regular stuff is just going to go over the brick barrier as well. The ground, with mulch, needs to be 1-2” lower than the brick, to keep it in.

Depending on the type of tree it could be putting out a chemical (I forget the name of it) that some plants can’t tolerate. So it might be more than shade bothering those plants. So you might do some googling to find out. I know there are plants that can tolerate that chemical. Likely your gardenias are ( if that is what the problem is) the other problem could be is your soil type. Whether it’s more acidic or alkaline, or more clay etc. that dead Bush might’ve died because it wasn’t right for your soil type. Those wildflower mixes rarely work. It’s almost best to just start with some reliable “Wildflowers” like coneflower etc that thrive anywhere and find ones that work for your yard. :) everything looks so pretty!
