When we were dynoing big torque diesel trucks, we used to set the truck on the back side of the rollers. This way when it's strapped down, it tries to climb the roller as you pull and tightens the straps even more. Makes a huge difference trying to hook big power

You guys need to start tying the car down so the tires are pushed into the rollers instead of tying it back like you are currently. This way, instead of relying on just the car's weight on the tires, you can increase the "weight" on the tires (similar to how a rear wing works at high speeds). Keep in mind that straps can only pull from hook to hook so the more vertical the straps are oriented, the more you can pull the car down onto the rollers. Use one pair of vertical straps to tie the rear of the car down and a horizontal pair to stop the car from moving forwards. It can be difficult to tension the vertical straps enough so a setup we used that worked really well when we had serious traction issues was: 1 - Park the drive wheels so they are backed up slightly past the top of the rollers. This way when the car moves forwards at WOT, the tires climb up higher on the roller which tightens your vertical straps (#2). 2 - Use a pair of straps to pull almost vertically downwards at the rear of the car, ideally pulling on an unsprung suspension component (eg. tying a solid rear axle down, not the car's frame; OR tying down at the hub, ball joint, bottom of coil over, etc.). This way the car's suspension doesn't "absorb" the downwards force when the tires "climb" up the rollers. 3 - Use a pair of moderately long straps attached to either the frame or suspension (doesn't really matter as long as it is a strong enough attachment point) to control and limit how far the car moves forwards at WOT. The longer these straps are, the more they will stretch and the more the car will move forwards during a pull which allows the tires to climb higher on the rollers. You need to play with the strap length and thickness to get the right stiffness so the wheels will move close to the top of the rollers (but not past the top) when at WOT. Using the setup above you can actually increase the downward force at the wheels so much that it can be hard on the hub bearings and can increase tire temperature so you need to find the right balance on how far you back up past the top of the rollers (#1, typically 1" to about 3") and how stiff the vertical straps (#2, the ones pulling downwards) are. Also if you pull down way too hard you will notice the dyno HP results will drop off so the ideal setup is where you have just enough extra downwards force on the rollers so the tires don't slip at all. Once you get this setup figured out you will never be limited by wheel traction on the dyno again.

Love to watch you guys working on Leroy again! After watching the tuning session I wanted to mention a few things to try and help. The higher the amount of air/fuel mixture in the combustion chamber the faster the burn rate. This is the reason why most timing maps will show a more retarded spark angle when moving to a higher load cell at a particular engine speed. However with higher engine speed there is less time for the combustion process so timing is advanced moving to higher engine speed at a given load point. It’s all about burn rate and achieving peak cylinder pressure at the crank angle that provides the greatest leverage on the crankshaft. The spark that achieves that angle is usually referred to as MBT (minimum timing for best torque) unless you run into knock first (also enrichening the mixture gets you further away from the knock limit). It would be awesome if you guys could get the car on the dyno hubs. Get setup with a knock box to really listen in with some headphones, or just watch the OE knock sensors if you still have them. Then run a course speed and load grid, starting from a retarded timing map and run spark sweeps at each speed/load point with 3 degree increments until you find MBT or knock (all assuming the hub dynos are load bearing). The load bearing aspect allows you to target essentially any cell in the spark maps, unlike the more typical inertia dyno that only allows you to run WOT sweeps through the maps. Those hubs could allow you guys to really dial the spark better than you ever could have on the inertia rolls. If you really wanna bog deeper you map that spark grid starting from base boost (waste-gates wide open) all the way to the peak boost that you run at sea-level. In addition when enrichening from stoich the burn rate typically increases around 0.85-0.9 which provides better torque if the spark is retarded to maintain MBT (probably why Jeremy wanted it a bit leaner). Then enriching further past that range the burn rate typically starts to slow back down but you continue to raise the knock ceiling by cooling the mixture down with the added fuel. Keep bogging deep boys!

For more grip on rear tires: Move the straps, or use additional straps higher up on the car - such as the plates for the trailer hitch (those perforated plates at the end of the chasis members). The higher up and greater the angle, the more downward force is applied. Low-down straps are essentially stretching the car, not so much pulling it down against the rollers.

You can also add some straps just in front of the rear wheels. If you have the tie down spots, you can go from the frame to the dyno and it will limit the amount of movement in the chassis.

Recently went through a similar dyno process with my car. Was able to have a buddy free up a workday on my birthday to put my car on the rollers and dial in different timing levels. We ended up making 19 dyno hits that day. I knew I had some soft timing but wanted to see how it picked up across the curve. At each boost level, we started with conservative timing and then adjusted based on peak power, power under the curve, and reading plugs. Used 22psi as a baseline in my case. We made 6 hits on this level, only adjusting the timing (never adjusted AFR). We picked up 110 peak horsepower and that was pretty consistent across the entire curve. Some areas under the curve were even more than 110HP. Our next level was 29psi. We had this pretty dialed in based on the baseline. We made a couple of hits but our baseline was very close. Our final levels were done on 34psi. We adjusted 3* of timing and found 125 peak HP as well as a ton of power under the curve. Highest HP Pull: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gKvEfYGPqshkeJY We also did a test to compare the air filters on the car versus off the car. Same timing, same fuel, same temperatures. Back-to-back tests. The car made more power with the filters on: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oHXXqpJ-gNuSlac kzbin.info/www/bejne/gIHdcqyMlJ2KqsU

You guys never cease to amaze me. The fact that you can do this on a consistent basis, (run the cars hard, break them, fix them and run them again), is a testament to how well you built the car in the first place. So many other guys have an issue like a burnt spark plug wire and the car is down for a month and never runs right again. Leroy and Ruby are true out and out race cars, you run them the weakest parts break, you upgrade them and go again. Please keep up the amazing content. Do it for Dale!

But produced by gearheads also, or else you end up with a "street outlaws" level disaster, when gearheads having a night of racing gets turned into a cliche reality TV show where everyone fights over petty sh"t
@CGT805 жыл бұрын
TV is over rated and pointless. I agree with Bryce, none of the reality tv shows try to be realistic. I'm a technical guy and hate drama, unless it is friendly interaction between people or involves real events or struggles as they actually happened. KZbin channels show far more of what it takes to get something done and focus on the process and results rather than turning an average day into a catastrophe. The gold mining shows leave out 99% or more of what happens in camp, how they live while not working in the machines, how they get supplies, etc. Automotive shows skip the technical aspects of building a car, or the welding or fitment of parts and it revolves around the drama. I can't stand to watch sports and don't even like watching my friends/competitors run their stages at the shooting competitions that I do. Spotting for a fellow competitor when we shoot silhouette matches is enjoyable as it keeps me busy while waiting for my turn to shoot. If someone wants me to critique their run or I want to see how others most efficiently handle a stage, then I will watch. Leroy going down the track isn't that interesting but at least with following the build and tuning, I can appreciate the inside views of cleetus driving and the shots to see if the tires spin. Without all of that, watching a car race just doesn't do it for me. At race tracks, I enjoyed the pits far more than the races. It would be more fun to drive or work on the vehicle than just watch it go down the track from afar. Long story short, Jared nailed it with the first part of the comment "content by gear heads, for gear heads."

This was an awesome video. Not that Garrett can't tune, but he is still learning and having Jeremy there educating him and us is great. I'd like to see Garrett and Jeremy tune an NA car on #Fasterproms, as part of Cleetus's edumacation! That would be a great video, get Coop to film and give Jez some stick too... Keep it up guys, the RMRW videos were another great educational moment, who knew how much work that all took.

WB02 sensors getting air contamination, in those short exhaust pipes. Even on a normal exhaust system, a bad leak or big crack can let enough air in to mess with the readings. Also, Leroy is gonna need bigger/wider rear tires to put all that power down at the track!
