If your main concern is sizing corn stalk residue I would suggest looking into calmer corn heads. We purchased a knife stall roller set from them and it does an awesome job. And if you do a lot of no-till work it's good for that to because it seems to leave the trash within a 8"-10" wide path over the remaining stalk leaving you some bare soil for no-till work come spring.

Sizing the stocks (stalks) has it's advantages. Here, creating a mat of residue just delays the warming and drying of our soils come spring, so most leave them standing.I am amazed at the amount of what I call "recreational farming" that goes on every fall. It's hard to resist the urge to work land when the sun is shinning and you know the days to do so are numbered. It looks better, no-tilling is ugly farming. I've tried the Salford VT and it did what they said, it sized the residue, which blew all over the township and took forever to dry come spring. My soil is different then your so results might be different. Working ground on a sunny day, burning fuel, racking up those hours strangely enough does make a farmer feel good when they pull the pin at 2:30 AM. That's why I call it "Recreational farming" HaHaHaHa JMHO doug

INCO No till was big and still is here in PA. But we are starting to see a resurgence of the mold board and chisel plow. After so many years you just have to turn the ground over. many of the bigger farms swear the yields are greater in fields that are turned over Vs no till. Before you go out and spend a ton of money on no till ask around, you may be surprised. Oddly our JD dealer was the one who was brought alot of these things to our attention.

You will get better material sizing and incorporation if you drive at a 15-20 degree angle from your corn rows. You will miss a lot of stalks if you drive down the same row as your crop was planted in.

Had one, got rid of it.. Spend the money and make the move to strip till. Those are so heavy,they are really packing the ground at the same time.. Or if you really want to chop the stalks, put Calmer rolls on your corn head, they will do the same job for much less.

We run a Kuhn/Kraus Excellerator that has an adjustable gang angle between 1 and 5 degrees that leaves the ground a lot smoother, sharpens the discs as you go and lets you run about 12 mph if you have enough power.

As a Brit, I have no idea what vertical tillage is, what is it?
@lukestrawwalker7 жыл бұрын
The idea is, a wavy blade that cuts down into the soil and back out again... basically wavy coulter blades. The ripples on the blade causes the blade to pull and move some soil, crumbling it up just a bit, without tossing it or throwing it much and "turning the soil over". The idea is to loosen up the soil without disturbing the soil profile, or destroying the mycorrhizia bacterial/fungal structure in the soil, which moves nutrients around in the soil to growing plants. Plowing and disking flips the entire soil structure upside down or mixes it up and turns it over, which destroys the soil profile and mycorrhizia. That said, this is just "tillage light" in that this machine is basically a low-angle disk with chopping blades. A true vertical tillage machine has wavy coulters that chop the residue and cut into the soil and right back out again. Good for chopping up/sizing residue, but not very good at loosening up the soil. Oh, I'm sure the top two inches are loose, to be sure, and tossed around a little bit (more than true vertical tillage, which is the whole idea-- not to toss the soil around, but merely to loosen it. Problem is, a disk is a disk... Soil experts say that disks create a compaction layer, because of the sideways motion of the soil as the blade moves forward through the soil... soil forced sideways compacts against itself and below the blade. SO basically this thing is probably creating a compaction layer (especially given its heavy weight) right at planting depth... not exactly what you want seedling roots to have to be trying to push through to get into the soil profile. With a true "vertical tillage" tool, the blade is cutting into the soil, the ripples on the blade DO push down against the soil as they enter the soil, but then the pull at the soil as the blade pulls up out of the soil, usually taking SOME soil with it or lifting it up-- it then crumbles in the process of being moved and settles back. Later! OL J R :)

What do you guys think you are gaining by putting 'steins on pasture? I always keep them in the lot and pour the grain to them and they still end up growing too much frame for my liking. I won't buy holstein feeders that have been on pasture-they grow way to much frame and don't finish until 15-1600 pounds - way to big for my liking
