I bought my home in March 1984. 40 years of being here. I have had 3 roofs put on since buying the house. The last one was put on in 2019. It's a sprayed on rigid urethane foam roof. The attic gable fan used to run 14 hours a day in the Summer. The thermostat is set to 95F. It almost never runs anymore. The foam roof cut my heating bill by 65%. I don't even have AC. The place stays cool in the Summer until evening when I open the windows all night. I never installed double pane windows. I did lifestyle changes that cut my electric consumption from 24-28 kw per day down to 8-10 kw per day. Not bad for a 2900 sq ft house. I do it for fun. I'm a retired Engineer and found plenty of solutions to live a normal life even if the SHTF and we lose the grid for a few weeks. If I ever build a house it will have 2x6 studs, sprayed in foam, tons of improvements, a real basement, and everything that I could think of to operate efficiently.

Hmm. I've installed 2 separate EG4 systems for my customers. The 1st was an 18K EG4 inverter (outputs 12,000 watts) with a server rack of 30 KWH storage. The 2nd was an EG4 18K inverter with 2 power pro batteries 14.something kwh (28 kwh total). I love the conduit box. Having the pre engineered knockouts saves lots of time. However, when the second battery doesn't have an inverter over it creates a conundrum about how to cover the knockouts. I put some plexiglass under them inside the conduit box and filled the gaps with clear silicon. Wasn't sure what else to do. The price point is great, but maybe not as great as it might seem since they want you to stop ay 10% or higher state of charge. Other lithium batteries can go all the way to zero. The outdoor version requires unscrewing the side panels to get at the display and breakers. Pretty stupid. I like the indoor version. Not sure I would ever get the 6000 watt version. Just get the 18K (12000 watts). Customer support was pretty good at Signature Solar. But there is alot of horsing around with tech support to get the settings right. Pretty weird. I just want to use the batteries for backup when the power goes out, but tech support keeps setting it so the batteries discharge and charge when the grid is working. Pretty annoying. The value is good, but expect to spend hours dealing with tech support and them tampering with your settings, the voltage going too low and setting alarms, and tech support setting the inverter to drain the batteries to near zero in the middle of the night then acting like it was no big deal.

Sent this post to signature solar head staff. And there are now covers for the knockouts that come with the box.
@jgoldenberg1235 ай бұрын
didnt your conduit box come with plugs to seal the top holes? It should have. Secondly these boxes are not nema rated. EG4 needs to fix that. Best way to do so is to include enough conduit knockout plugs for all of the knockouts. RIght now, water gets into my boxes just from the knockouts still being there. They need to be sealed.
@gosolxsolar5 ай бұрын
@@jgoldenberg123 The conduit boxes came with massive numbers of plugs and fittings. No-one can even remotely criticize them for that. I installed the equipment indoor, so whether tight was never an issue for me. However, putting lumpy plugs into the top of a conduit box where no inverter sits on it doesn't create a nice finished look. If they had not knocked out half of the holes before shipping, that would have been better, and made it easy for me to leave a flat surface for the customer. Otherwise, the conduit boxes may be my favorite feature of the install. They are very cool and useful.
@jgoldenberg1235 ай бұрын
@@gosolxsolar Yea, they are ok, its kind of strange to me to put a seal on the front door of the device where there are so many places water can leak in becuase of all the holes they punched. Honestly, just put some marks on it or something, so that you can drill them accurately. I dont understand how these boxes will ever pass for any outdoor nema rating. Working in the trade, they should let the electrician punch the hole. They are enabling DIYers to do this all wrong by pre-punching the holes. Every installation of these conduit boxes will be slightly different. I cant wait to see what the inspector thinks of these boxes, I may have to surround them with an actual rated nema box. I am very worried.

Excellent, detailed review. Well, if I had to comment, I notice huge efforts made by EG4 trying to keep up with market demand, knowing there are 200A 'BMS' strong competitors that are well renowned. It has such a beautiful, rugged, strong-built case, ropes, flexibile busbars and much-needed add-ons inside (2x fire extinguishing packages, a front smart display, heat pads, an MCB for the DC line, and parallel terminals), which are all a plus. But its lacking when it comes to cell balancing, and with its 120 mA passive balancer, the cells 'can and will' go off balance at some point in time (no matter how matched their internal resistance is). Its low balancing capabilities won't be enough to fix such problems with ease, like a 'JK BMS' and 'Seplos V3.0' would. Also, why do busbars have to be welded? Why not give the option for the user to replace a bad cell? Of coarse, one could drill and undo the stud, but this is a danger that can be avoided by using ordinary nuts other than laser-welded ones. For those who don't know the consequences of unbalanced cells in a 16S battery setup like this, they would be: > Unable to reach the 'Overall pack full SOC' = 58.4V due to either cell(s) reaching their full SOC (3.65v) while some of them are far behind. Hence, the BMS will stop charging because of the individual cell overvoltage protection. > Unable to utilize the full capacity of the 280Ah cells within, the EG4 battery capacity would serve far less than a BMS with optimal active balancer capabilities would. Without being too judgemental here, its not hard to notice how the host (a brave salesman) tend to make his reviews biased toward EG4's favor. Otherwise, why hasn't he, having so much experience, pointed this out already? I let you, as customers & buyers, take the lead. But yes, buying a 200Ah setup would be, 'in my opinion' the most feasible way to go when compared with server rack batteries. Imagine that it just takes two of these setups to have around 560Ah, while one would require a tower rack of batteries (with built-in BMS) to keep up with it.😎 Stay charged and don't get sun-tanned.

Gotta wait awhile before my next purchase... slowly building my system but I'm thinking next year one of these (probably outdoor) to replace my Lead Acid batteries that I have hooked up. But I'm loving the EG4 18kpv so far.

I will be buying one next month. Already have eg4 server rack batteries with 2 eg4 3000 inverters. I think I can hook the server rack batteries to the bus bars on top and one communication cable to each battery.

Please talk about transfer switch. House to grid or to this system. Also solar panels for this.

Literally the only KZbinr I would disable my add blocker for. Thank you again for how much you have helped me over the years with all my projects I never buy anything electrical unless you have talked about it. It looks like this may be one of my next purchases I'm about to start an electric boat project but I'm curious would this be ok to mount sideways?

This is powerful enough to run a house - not just a cabin. Looks an amazing setup. And so easy to add another 14.3kWh! So about half the price of the Tesla Powerwall. The Tesla Powerwall doesn't even confirm it uses LFP batteries (8000 cycles) it possibly uses normal lighter smaller lithiums that can really only cycle 2000-3000 times. They don't confirm what lithium chemistry last I heard!

Long time listener... I wonder if you have any system recommendations for the following, where I'd add solar panels later (too many trees I don't want to cut). Note the use of battery until it's drained, then go to generator...: Normal mode: utility >> eg4-18kpv >> battery >> home panel Outage mode battery available : utility >> utility outage >> eg4-18kpv >> battery >> home panel Outage mode battery out: utility >> utility outage >> eg4-18kpv >> generator >> battery >> home panel

Could they have put an acrylic cover plate above the batteries to protect them? Use this instead of a Tesla Powerwall? I know it requires a few more things, but sounds like it would work.

I'd be inclined to put some fiberglass board on the face of those cells. In case something impacted the front panel.

Hey Will. I watched this and I rewatched your video from 2 years ago about nobody using raw cells any more. Now that I see the EVE 280 cells for under $100 instead of the $229 from 2 years ago I have to say the savings difference is huge now compared to then. I understand the plus aspects of a built battery but the savings could be $1500 on the raw cell setup. What are your thoughts?

So if I did my math correctly. This battery runs at 240 dollars per Kwh. 3431/14/3 The EG4 rack mount option (ones with displays) is 290 per Kwh. 8937/30.72. So for a few thousand dollars more you can get 42.9 Kwh. I haven't checked yet, but I imagine that if you already own a rack of EG4s, that these should be able to work in the same network. Regardless, I'm glad that more options are opening up!

Hopefully one of the ones that is being sent to you is the Ruixu Lithi2-16 16Kwh looks like it will be a great cost per watt. 😊

Love your work and EG4 equipment. Unfortunately only available in U.S. & surrounding areas. No international shipping. I’m in Thailand and we just installed 2x LVTopsun 6Kw inverters, 3x LVTopsun 51.2v 200Ah batteries & 24x Longi 580w PV’s.. I’ve had it running almost a month. Powers a pool pump, bore pump, water pump tank to tank & to house, 6 air cons no issue. Can’t run air cons once the PV’s stop generating electricity as the batteries won’t then last all night. We’re off grid but have company supplied electricity as the “backup source”. Also unable to adjust SOC and discharge from 25% switch to back up source & 40% back to batteries. Not sure what’s going on there as I’d like to go down to 10% switch over to company & 30% back to batteries. This would see me not needing to use company electricity at all. For those interested in costs overseas. My system here cost $14k fully installed. The only downside here is suppliers and installers or companies drop you like a hot potato after installation and they’ve been paid. Never to be seen again. Would love to see a review on LVTopsun brand if that’s available to you & possible to do.

Out of curiosity, how noisy would a full inverter and battery system be in a closet facing an exterior service entry wall adjoining a bedroom? Silent, buzz you sweetly to sleep, or buzz won't let you sleep?

This really emphasizes why Victron needs to come out with a 5kW 48V version of the 2x120 inverter, there's SO many good options for 48V, your $/kWh goes way up for 24V and the system $/kWh goes up for large 12V due to the crazy cabling requirements.
@adlerhut43975 ай бұрын
Just yesterday I went to Victron's website to look up what they have produced recently and it didn't seem like anything material. I do love their products but they seem to be slower at development.

I had 14.4k solar installed in 2020. My installer chose AP Systems QS1 microinverters. (Note, without telling me exactly what they were installing). I have 36 400-Watt panels on my roof. So far we have had to replace 2 inverters. Now, after the second inverter replacement, all modules are reporting 1/2 of the output they should have compared to the new replacement. My 14.4 KW system now has a total output of 7.5k max. I'm thinking of asking them to remove all the micro-inverters, wire in string and I'll buy an EG4 18kpv with this battery.
@tom_w672 ай бұрын
it would be nice if we could see a setup like this with a generator added to the setup also to see how a full system looks and works? so you would have grid solar batteries and generator.
