Parcells didn't win any Super Bowls in New England, but his hiring turned the franchise around almost immediately. The franchise was hot garbage in the early 90's. The Patriots have yet to fall back anywhere near the depths of the bungling Patriots of old. In the 26 seasons since 1993, the Patriots have (percent of the time over 26 seasons): 18 division championships (70%), 20 playoff appearances (77%), 14 AFC Championship appearances (54%, 82% since 2001 ), 10 AFC Championships and SB appearances (38%, 59% since 2001), 6 Super Bowl Championships (23%, 35% since 2001).

While I despise Parcells for his douchebag attitude in '96 and defecting to the Jets the following season, I will begrudgingly admit that his hiring was the first step in bringing the franchise out of the doldrums. Ironically, in 2000 I didn't want the Patriots to hire Belichick because I thought he was just going to be another Parcells and would leave first chance he got. At the time I didn't know that Kraft had very nearly hired him in 1997. I assumed he went with Parcells to New York out of loyalty.

Orthwein was right about the day of Parcells' hiring being a huge step forward for this franchise. People lined up at the stadium in droves to buy season tix in the days that followed and In April Bledsoe's selection provided even more optimism. Within 4 years they were AFC champs and after a 3 season decline from '97-'99, Bob Kraft was able to pull a trade for Belichick. Nothing matches April 16, 2000 thougth, when the architect of a 20 year reign came aboard.

Before Tom Brady and after Steve Grogan and Tony Eason and especially before Bob Kraft would take the reins as owner - this was an era that was absolutely terrible for the Patriots. As a Bears fan I can understand the huge letdown and disappointment. I pray that fans in New England have completely forgotten these bad days. And linebacker Andre Tippett I do remember him on the Patriots when they played the Bears in Super Bowl XX.

The thing I really admire about Kraft is that he took a considerable financial risk when he bought the team. Orthwein offered him something like $50 million to let the team out of its lease at Foxboro Stadium so he (Orthwein) could move the club to St. Louis. Kraft could have pocketed that money and been set for life, but he held out and paid what was at that time an enormous sum for the club when Orthwein finally gave up and put it on the market. Needless to say, the gamble paid off, but if you'd have told anyone in 1994 that, in less than a decade, the team would win two Super Bowls and have gone to a third, they'd have had you committed.

As a Patriots fan I'll always appreciate Bill Parcells for turning around the fortunes of this franchise... ...but can never forgive him for the way he ended his tenure. For years he worked to make them a great team... and then let petty squabbles with Robert Kraft turn into him looking for another job right before the Super Bowl. He sabotaged his own legacy. In my opinion, he does NOT deserve a place in the Patriots Hall of Fame.

This was a great turning point in our legacy. Except for the fact that Parcells was a traitor and turned on us in the middle of the night. Thankfully God's grace is mighty as BB came in to resurrect us years later and all worked out beautifully.

What was dopey about these annual highlight films was that they generally only showed clips of games that the team won... which is fine if a team won a lot of games. When a team only wins two games in a season there's not much to show. I think it did a disservice to a team to act like the previous season didn't exist. Same thing when Parcells left New England to go to the Jets in 1997. The Jets were 1-15 in 1996, so most of their "highlights" was Parcells driving around in a golf cart at the 1997 summer camp.
